Abstract

In the context of closed quantum systems, when a system prepared in its ground state undergoes a sudden quench, the resulting Loschmidt echo can exhibit zeros, resembling the Fisher zeros in the theory of classical equilibrium phase transitions. These zeros lead to nonanalytical behavior of the corresponding rate function, which is referred to as the dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT). In this paper, we investigate DQPTs in the context of open quantum systems that are coupled to both Markovian and non-Markovian dephasing baths via a conserved quantity. The general framework is corroborated by studying the nonequilibrium dynamics of a transverse-field Ising ring. Our paper might shed light on theoretical developments of DQPTs in the strong system-bath coupling regime.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in the spin-boson model

David Dolgitzer, Debing Zeng, Yusui Chen

We study dynamical quantum phase transitions in a 2-qubit system interacting with a transverse field and a quantized bosonic environment in the context of open quantum systems. By applying the stochastic Schrödinger equation approach, the model with a spin-boson type of coupling can be solved numerically. It is observed that the dynamics of the rate function of the Loschmidt echo in a 2-qubit system within a finite size of Hilbert space exhibit nonanalyticity when the direction of the transverse field coupled to the system is under a sudden quench. Moreover, we demonstrate that the memory time of the environment and the coupling strength between the system and the transverse field can jointly impact the dynamics of the rate function. We also supply a semi-classical explanation to bridge the dynamical quantum phase transitions in many-body systems and the non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in the Kitaev honeycomb model

Markus Schmitt, Stefan K. Kehrein

The notion of a dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT) was recently introduced [Heyl et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 135704 (2013)] as the nonanalytic behavior of the Loschmidt echo at critical times in the thermodynamic limit. In this work the quench dynamics in the ground state sector of the two-dimensional Kitaev honeycomb model is studied regarding the occurrence of DQPTs. For general two-dimensional systems of BCS type it is demonstrated how the zeros of the Loschmidt echo coalesce to areas in the thermodynamic limit, implying that DQPTs occur as discontinuities in the second derivative. In the Kitaev honeycomb model DQPTs appear after quenches across a phase boundary or within the massless phase. In the 1d limit of the Kitaev honeycomb model it becomes clear that the discontinuity in the higher derivative is intimately related to the higher dimensionality of the nondegenerate model. Moreover, there is a strong connection between the stationary value of the rate function of the Loschmidt echo after long times and the occurrence of DQPTs in this model.

Mixed state dynamical quantum phase transitions

Utso Bhattacharya, Souvik Kumar Bandyopadhyay, Amit Dutta

Preparing an integrable system in a mixed state described by a thermal density matrix, we subject it to a sudden quench and explore the subsequent unitary dynamics. To address the question of whether the nonanalyticities, namely, the dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs), persist when the initial state is mixed, we consider two versions of the generalized Loschmidt overlap amplitude (GLOA). Our study shows that the GLOA constructed using the Uhlmann approach does not show any signature of DQPTs at any nonzero initial temperature. On the other hand, a GLOA defined in the interferometric phase approach through the purifications of the time-evolved density matrix, indeed shows that nonanalyiticies in the corresponding ``dynamical free-energy density'' persist, thereby establishing the existence of mixed state dynamical quantum phase transitions (MSDQPTs). Our work provides a framework that perfectly reproduces both the nonanalyticities and also the emergent topological structure in the pure state limit. These claims are corroborated by analyzing the nonequilibrium dynamics of a transverse Ising chain initially prepared in a thermal state and subjected to a sudden quench of the transverse field.

Quantum-coherence-assisted dynamical phase transition in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model

Bao-Ming Xu

Abstract Quantum coherence will undoubtedly play a fundamental role in understanding the dynamics of quantum many-body systems; therefore, to be able to reveal its genuine contribution is of great importance. In this paper, we focus our discussions on the one-dimensional transverse field quantum Ising model initialized in the coherent Gibbs state, and investigate the effects of quantum coherence on dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT). After quenching the strength of the transverse field, the effects of quantum coherence are studied using Fisher zeros and the rate function of the Loschmidt echo. We find that quantum coherence not only recovers DQPT destroyed by thermal fluctuations, but also generates some entirely new DQPTs, which are independent of the equilibrium quantum critical point. We also find that the Fisher zero cutting the imaginary axis is not sufficient to generate DQPT because it also requires the Fisher zeros to be tightly bound close enough to the neighborhood of the imaginary axis. It can be manifested that DQPTs are rooted in quantum fluctuations. This work reveals new information on the fundamental connection between quantum critical phenomena and quantum coherence.

Dynamical quantum phase transition with singular multipartite entanglement

Jie Chen, Ricardo Costa de Almeida, Hendrik Weimer

We investigate the nonequilibrium quench dynamics of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model in both integrable and nonintegrable regimes. In particular, we report on a novel type of dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT) that is characterized by a singular multipartite entanglement signature occurring at critical times in the post-quench dynamics. We show that this behavior is fundamentally distinct from previously studied DQPTs characterized by a nonanalytic rate function. We quantify the multipartite entanglement of the state by the quantum Fisher information and demonstrate that the DQPT belongs to a different universality class than the ground-state phase transition. Furthermore, we perform a spectral analysis of the DQPT and demonstrate that it is a genuine nonequilibrium transition arising from the constructive interference of excited states of the system during the many-body dynamics. Finally, we discuss potential experimental realizations in Rydberg platforms as well as applications in the context of quantum metrology.

Variational quantum simulation of dynamical quantum phase transition in Markovian open quantum systems

Yukai Guo, Jinjian Yu, Xing Bao Gao

We investigate dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) in Markovian open quantum systems using a variational quantum simulation (VQS) algorithm based on quantum state diffusion (QSD). This approach reformulates the Lindblad master equation as an ensemble of pure-state trajectories, enabling efficient simulation of dissipative quantum dynamics with effectively reduced quantum resources. Focusing on the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model (TFIM), we simulate quench dynamics under both local and global Lindblad dissipation. The QSD-VQS algorithm accurately captures the nonanalytic cusps in the Loschmidt rate function, and reveals their modulation by dissipation strength and system size. Notably, DQPTs are gradually suppressed under strong local dissipation, while they persist under strong global dissipation due to collective environmental effects. Benchmarking against exact Lindblad solutions confirms the high accuracy and scalability of our method.
