Adapted projection operator technique for the treatment of initial correlations

Abstract

Standard theoretical descriptions of the dynamics of open quantum systems rely on the assumption that the correlations with the environment can be neglected at some reference (initial) time. While being reasonable in specific instances, such as when the coupling between the system and the environment is weak or when the interaction starts at a distinguished time, the use of initially uncorrelated states is questionable if one wants to deal with general models, taking into account the mutual influence that the open-system and environmental evolutions perform on each other. Here we introduce a perturbative method that can be applied to any microscopic modeling of the system-environment interaction, including fully general initial correlations. Extending the standard technique based on projection operators that single out the relevant part of the global dynamics, we define a family of projections adapted to a convenient decomposition of the initial state, which involves a convex mixture of product operators with proper environmental states. This leads us to characterize the open-system dynamics via an uncoupled system of differential equations, which are homogeneous and whose number is limited by the dimensionality of the open system, for any kind of initial correlations. Our method is further illustrated by means of two case studies, for which it reproduces the expected dynamical behavior in the long-time regime more consistently than the standard projection technique.

Initial correlations in open quantum systems: constructing linear dynamical maps and master equations

Alessandra Colla, Niklas Neubrand, Heinz‐Peter Breuer

Abstract We investigate the dynamics of open quantum systems which are initially correlated with their environment. The strategy of our approach is to analyze how given, fixed initial correlations modify the evolution of the open system with respect to the corresponding uncorrelated dynamical behavior with the same fixed initial environmental state, described by a completely positive dynamical map. We show that, for any predetermined initial correlations, one can introduce a linear dynamical map on the space of operators of the open system which acts like the proper dynamical map on the set of physical states and represents its unique linear extension. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this construction leads to a linear, time-local quantum master equation with generalized Lindblad structure involving time-dependent, possibly negative transition rates. Thus, the general non-Markovian dynamics of an open quantum system can be described by means of a time-local master equation even in the case of arbitrary, fixed initial system–environment correlations. We present some illustrative examples and explain the relation of our approach to several other approaches proposed in the literature.

Dynamics of Multi-Level Open Quantum Systems with Initial System-Environment Correlations

Nikolay N. Bogolubov, Andrey Vladimirovich Soldatov

Exact and approximate master equations were derived by the projection operator method for the reduced statistical operator of a multi-level open quantum system with finite number $$N$$ of quantum eigenstates interacting with arbitrary external deterministic fields and dissipative environment simultaneously. Unlike conventional master equations derived by the projection operator method for the quantum systems of this kind so far, these equations are homogeneous in the reduced statistical operator while, at the same time, taking into account initial correlations between the multi-level system and the environment. Consistent representation of the multi-level system evolution in terms of the $$SU(N)$$ operator algebra facilitates efficient numerical analysis of these equations derived for various physically realistic quantum models.

Non-Markovian quantum dynamics: A non-perturbative approach combining projection superoperators and Hilbert space averaging

Heinz‐Peter Breuer, Jochen Gemmer B, Mathias Michel A

The time-convolutionless (TCL) projection operator technique allows a systematic analysis of the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of open systems. We introduce a class of projection superoperators which project the states of the total system onto certain correlated system-environment states. It is shown that the application of the TCL technique to this class of correlated superoperators enables the non-perturbative treatment of the dynamics of system-environment models for which the standard approach fails in any finite order of the coupling strength. We demonstrate further that the correlated superoperators correspond to the idea of a best guess of conditional quantum expectations which is determined by a suitable Hilbert space average. The general approach is illustrated by means of the model of a spin which interacts through randomly distributed couplings with a finite reservoir consisting of two energy bands. Extensive numerical simulations of the full Schroedinger equation of the model reveal the power and efficiency of the method.

Influence of initial correlations on evolution over time of an open quantum system

Victor F. Los

A novel approach to accounting for the influence of initial system-bath correlations on the dynamics of an open quantum system, based on the conventional projection operator technique, is suggested. To avoid the difficulties of treating the initial correlations, the conventional Nakajima-Zwanzig inhomogeneous generalized master equations (GMEs) for a system's reduced statistical operator and correlation function are exactly converted into the homogeneous GMEs (HGMEs), which take into account the initial correlations in the kernel governing the evolution of these HGMEs. In the second order (Born) approximation in the system-bath interaction, the obtained HGMEs are local in time and valid at all timescales. They are further specialized for a realistic equilibrium Gibbs initial (at $t=t_0$) system+bath state (for a system reduced statistical operator an external force at $t>t_0$ is applied) and then for a bath of oscillators (Boson field). As an example, the evolution of a selected quantum oscillator (a localized mode) interacting with a Boson field (Fano-like model) is considered at different timescales. It is shown explicitly how the initial correlations influence the oscillator evolution process. In particular, it is shown that the equilibrium system's correlation function acquires at the large timescale the additional constant phase factor conditioned by survived initial system-bath correlations.

Dynamics of open quantum systems with initial system-environment correlations via stochastic unravelings

Federico Settimo, Kimmo Luoma, Dariusz Chruściński +3 more

In standard treatments of open quantum systems, the reduced dynamics is described starting from the assumption that the system and the environment are initially uncorrelated. This assumption, however, is not always guaranteed in realistic scenarios and several theoretical approaches to characterize initially correlated dynamics have been introduced. For the uncorrelated scenario, stochastic unravelings are a powerful tool to simulate the dynamics. So far they have not been used in the most general case in which correlations are initially present since they cannot be applied to nonpositive operators or noncompletely positive maps. In our work, we employ the bath positive $(\mathrm{B}+)$ or one-sided positive decomposition (OPD) formalism as a starting point to generalize stochastic unraveling in the presence of initial correlations. Noticeably, our approach does not depend on the particular unraveling technique, but holds for both piecewise deterministic and diffusive unravelings. This generalization allows not only for more powerful simulations for the reduced dynamics, but also for a deeper theoretical understanding of open system dynamics.
