Abstract

Exact and approximate master equations were derived by the projection operator method for the reduced statistical operator of a multi-level open quantum system with finite number $$N$$ of quantum eigenstates interacting with arbitrary external deterministic fields and dissipative environment simultaneously. Unlike conventional master equations derived by the projection operator method for the quantum systems of this kind so far, these equations are homogeneous in the reduced statistical operator while, at the same time, taking into account initial correlations between the multi-level system and the environment. Consistent representation of the multi-level system evolution in terms of the $$SU(N)$$ operator algebra facilitates efficient numerical analysis of these equations derived for various physically realistic quantum models.

Algebraic Aspects of the Dynamics of Quantum Multilevel Systems in the Projection Operator Technique

N. N. Bogolyubov, Andrey Vladimirovich Soldatov

Using the projection operator method, we obtain approximate time-local and time-nonlocal master equations for the reduced statistical operator of a multilevel quantum system with a finite number N of quantum eigenstates coupled simultaneously to arbitrary classical fields and a dissipative environment. We show that the structure of the obtained equations is significantly simplified if the free Hamiltonian dynamics of the multilevel system under the action of external fields and also its Markovian and non-Markovian evolutions due to coupling to the environment are described via the representation of the multilevel system in terms of the SU(N) algebra, which allows realizing effective numerical algorithms for solving the obtained equations when studying real problems in various fields of theoretical and applied physics.

Algebraic aspects of the driven dynamics in the density operator and correlation functions calculation for multi-level open quantum systems

Nikolai N. Bogolubov, Andrey Vladimirovich Soldatov

Exact and approximate master equations were derived by the projection operator method for the reduced statistical operator of a multi-level quantum system with finite number N of quantum eigenstates interacting with arbitrary external classical fields and dissipative environment simultaneously. It was shown that the structure of these equations can be simplified significantly if the free Hamiltonian driven dynamics of an arbitrary quantum multi-level system under the influence of the external driving fields as well as its Markovian and non-Markovian evolution, stipulated by the interaction with the environment, are described in terms of the SU(N) algebra representation. As a consequence, efficient numerical methods can be developed and employed to analyze these master equations for real problems in various fields of theoretical and applied physics. It was also shown that literally the same master equations hold not only for the reduced density operator but also for arbitrary nonequilibrium multi-time correlation functions as well under the only assumption that the system and the environment are uncorrelated at some initial moment of time. A calculational scheme was proposed to account for these lost correlations in a regular perturbative way, thus providing additional computable terms to the correspondent master equations for the correlation functions.

Exact homogeneous master equation for open quantum systems incorporating initial correlations

Pei-Yun Yang, Wei-Min Zhang

We show that the exact master equation incorporating initial correlations for open quantum systems, within the Nakajima-Zwanzig operator-projection method, is a homegenous master equation for the reduced density matrix. We also derive explicitly the exact master equation for a large class of bosonic and fermionic open quantum systems incorporating initial correlations, the resulting master equation is homogenous. We find that the effects of the initial correlations can be fully embedded into the fluctuation dynamics through the exact homogenous master equation. Also a generalized nonequilibrium fluctuation-dissipation theorem incorporating the initial correlations is obtained.

Adapted projection operator technique for the treatment of initial correlations

Andrea Trevisan, Andrea Smirne, Nina Megier +1 more

Standard theoretical descriptions of the dynamics of open quantum systems rely on the assumption that the correlations with the environment can be neglected at some reference (initial) time. While being reasonable in specific instances, such as when the coupling between the system and the environment is weak or when the interaction starts at a distinguished time, the use of initially uncorrelated states is questionable if one wants to deal with general models, taking into account the mutual influence that the open-system and environmental evolutions perform on each other. Here we introduce a perturbative method that can be applied to any microscopic modeling of the system-environment interaction, including fully general initial correlations. Extending the standard technique based on projection operators that single out the relevant part of the global dynamics, we define a family of projections adapted to a convenient decomposition of the initial state, which involves a convex mixture of product operators with proper environmental states. This leads us to characterize the open-system dynamics via an uncoupled system of differential equations, which are homogeneous and whose number is limited by the dimensionality of the open system, for any kind of initial correlations. Our method is further illustrated by means of two case studies, for which it reproduces the expected dynamical behavior in the long-time regime more consistently than the standard projection technique.

Influence of initial correlations on evolution over time of an open quantum system

Victor F. Los

A novel approach to accounting for the influence of initial system-bath correlations on the dynamics of an open quantum system, based on the conventional projection operator technique, is suggested. To avoid the difficulties of treating the initial correlations, the conventional Nakajima-Zwanzig inhomogeneous generalized master equations (GMEs) for a system's reduced statistical operator and correlation function are exactly converted into the homogeneous GMEs (HGMEs), which take into account the initial correlations in the kernel governing the evolution of these HGMEs. In the second order (Born) approximation in the system-bath interaction, the obtained HGMEs are local in time and valid at all timescales. They are further specialized for a realistic equilibrium Gibbs initial (at $t=t_0$) system+bath state (for a system reduced statistical operator an external force at $t>t_0$ is applied) and then for a bath of oscillators (Boson field). As an example, the evolution of a selected quantum oscillator (a localized mode) interacting with a Boson field (Fano-like model) is considered at different timescales. It is shown explicitly how the initial correlations influence the oscillator evolution process. In particular, it is shown that the equilibrium system's correlation function acquires at the large timescale the additional constant phase factor conditioned by survived initial system-bath correlations.

Non-Markovian finite-temperature two-time correlation functions of system operators: Beyond the quantum regression theorem

Hsi‐Sheng Goan, Po‐Wen Chen, Chung-Chin Jian

An extremely useful evolution equation that allows systematically calculating the two-time correlation functions (CF's) of system operators for non-Markovian open (dissipative) quantum systems is derived. The derivation is based on perturbative quantum master equation approach, so non-Markovian open quantum system models that are not exactly solvable can use our derived evolution equation to easily obtain their two-time CF's of system operators, valid to second order in the system-environment interaction. Since the form and nature of the Hamiltonian are not specified in our derived evolution equation, our evolution equation is applicable for bosonic and/or fermionic environments and can be applied to a wide range of system-environment models with any factorized (separable) system-environment initial states (pure or mixed). When applied to a general model of a system coupled to a finite-temperature bosonic environment with a system coupling operator L in the system-environment interaction Hamiltonian, the resultant evolution equation is valid for both L = L(†) and L ≠ L(†) cases, in contrast to those evolution equations valid only for L = L(†) case in the literature. The derived equation that generalizes the quantum regression theorem (QRT) to the non-Markovian case will have broad applications in many different branches of physics. We then give conditions on which the QRT holds in the weak system-environment coupling case and apply the derived evolution equation to a problem of a two-level system (atom) coupled to the finite-temperature bosonic environment (electromagnetic fields) with L ≠ L(†).
