Abstract

The time-convolutionless (TCL) projection operator technique allows a systematic analysis of the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of open systems. We present a class of projection superoperators that project the states of the total system onto certain correlated system-environment states. It is shown that the application of the TCL technique to this class of correlated superoperators enables the nonperturbative treatment of the dynamics of system-environment models for which the standard approach fails in any finite order of the coupling strength. We demonstrate further that the correlated superoperators correspond to the idea of a best guess of conditional quantum expectations, which is determined by a suitable Hilbert-space average. The general approach is illustrated by means of the model of a spin that interacts through randomly distributed couplings with a finite reservoir consisting of two energy bands. Extensive numerical simulations of the full Schrödinger equation of the model reveal the power and efficiency of the method.

Expansion of time-convolutionless non-Markovian quantum master equations: A case study using the Fano-Anderson model

Tim Alhäuser, Heinz-Peter Breuer

We explore the performance of the time-convolutionless (TCL) projection operator technique using the Fano-Anderson model as a test case. Comparing the exact TCL master equation with an expansion in powers of the strength of the system-environment coupling, we analyze the transient dynamics as well as the steady-state behavior. For a Lorentzian spectral density we demonstrate that the dimensionless expansion parameter corresponds to the ratio of the environmental correlation time to the relaxation time of the system, and we derive the convergence radius for the TCL expansion, which is seen to depend on the ratio of detuning and width of the spectral density. We further study the quantum non-Markovianity of the model based on the evolution of the Bures distance between quantum states and how it is represented by the second and fourth order of the expansion. Our results highlight both the strengths and the limitations of the TCL formalism in capturing key features of open quantum systems and, in particular, the challenges of accurately describing strongly coupled systems and non-Markovian dynamics.

Non-Markovian quantum dynamics: Extended correlated projection superoperators

Zhiqiang Huang

The correlated projection superoperator techniques provide a better understanding about how correlations lead to strong non-Markovian effects in open quantum systems. Their superoperators are independent of initial state, which may not be suitable for some cases. To improve this, we develop another approach, that is extending the composite system before use the correlated projection superoperator techniques. Such an approach allows the choice of different superoperators for different initial states. We apply these techniques to a simple model to illustrate the general approach. The numerical simulations of the full Schrödinger equation of the model reveal the power and efficiency of the method.

Non-Markovian quantum dynamics and the method of correlated projection superoperators

Heinz‐Peter Breuer

Efficient methods for the description of the non-Markovian dynamics of open systems play an important role in many proposed applications of quantum mechanics. Here we review some of the most important tools that are based on the projection operator techniques of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. The standard product-state projection is generalized to a new class of correlated projection superoperators that allow the treatment of strong memory effects, and lead to a non-Markovian generalization of the Lindblad equation.

Correlated projection operator approach to non-Markovian dynamics in spin baths

Jan Fischer, Heinz‐Peter Breuer

The dynamics of an open quantum system is usually studied by performing a weak-coupling and weak-correlation expansion in the system-bath interaction. For systems exhibiting strong couplings and highly non-Markovian behavior this approach is not justified. We apply a recently proposed correlated projection superoperator technique to the model of a central spin coupled to a spin bath via full Heisenberg interaction. Analytical solutions to both the Nakajima-Zwanzig and the time-convolutionless master equation are determined and compared with the results of the exact solution. The correlated projection operator technique significantly improves the standard methods and can be applied to many physical problems such as the hyperfine interaction in a quantum dot.

Transport in anisotropic model systems analyzed by a correlated projection superoperator technique

Hendrik Weimer, Mathias Michel A, Jochen Gemmer B +1 more

By using a correlated projection operator, the time-convolutionless (TCL) method to derive a quantum master equation can be utilized to investigate the transport behavior of quantum systems as well. Here, we analyze a three-dimensional anisotropic quantum model system according to this technique. The system consists of Heisenberg coupled two-level systems in one direction and weak random interactions in all other ones. Depending on the partition chosen, we obtain ballistic behavior along the chains and normal transport in the perpendicular direction. These results are perfectly confirmed by the numerical solution of the full time-dependent Schrödinger equation.
