Comment on "Floquet Fractional Chern Insulators"

Luca D’Alessio

Abstract

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112 156801 (2014)], Grushin et al. studied a Fermi-Hubbard-model for spinful electrons on a honeycomb lattice coupled to an external polarized electric field. By computing the Floquet Hamiltonian perturbatively to order $ω^{-1}$ (where $ω$ is the frequency of the drive) they predicted that, for specific values of the driving and filling, the system can transition into a Fractional Chern Insulator. In this comment we point out that: i) the calculation of the Floquet Hamiltonian misses some terms of order $ω^{-1}$ and ii) the assumption that the Floquet bands are filled as in time-independent systems is questionable.

We respond to the comments expressed by L. D'Alessio in arXiv:1412.3481 on our work "Floquet Fractional Chern Insulators" [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 156801 (2014)]. We confirm the central result that the ground state of the effective Hamiltonian is an interacting fractional Chern insulator.

Floquet Fractional Chern Insulators

Adolfo G. Grushin, Álvaro Gómez-León, Titus Neupert

We show theoretically that periodically driven systems with short range Hubbard interactions offer a feasible platform to experimentally realize fractional Chern insulator states. We exemplify the procedure for both the driven honeycomb and the square lattice, where we derive the effective steady state band structure of the driven system by using the Floquet theory and subsequently study the interacting system with exact numerical diagonalization. The fractional Chern insulator state equivalent to the 1/3 Laughlin state appears at 7/12 total filling (1/6 filling of the upper band). The state also features spontaneous ferromagnetism and is thus an example of the spontaneous breaking of a continuous symmetry along with a topological phase transition. We discuss light-driven graphene and shaken optical lattices as possible experimental systems that can realize such a state.

Floquet fractional Chern insulators and competing phases in twisted bilayer graphene

Peng-Sheng Hu, Yihan Zhou, Zhao Liu

We study the many-body physics in twisted bilayer graphene coupled to periodic driving of a circularly polarized light when electron-electron interactions are taken into account. In the limit of high driving frequency \Omega Ω , we use Floquet theory to formulate the system by an effective static Hamiltonian truncated to the order of \Omega^{-2} Ω − 2 , which consists of a single-electron part and the screened Coulomb interaction. We numerically simulate this effective Hamiltonian by extensive exact diagonalization in the parameter space spanned by the twist angle and the driving strength. Remarkably, in a wide region of the parameter space, we identify Floquet fractional Chern insulator states in the partially filled Floquet valence bands. We characterize these topologically ordered states by ground-state degeneracy, spectral flow, and entanglement spectrum. In regions of the parameter space where fractional Chern insulator states are absent, we find topologically trivial charge density waves and band-dispersion-induced Fermi liquids which strongly compete with fractional Chern insulator states.

Role of real-space micromotion for bosonic and fermionic Floquet fractional Chern insulators

Egidijus Anisimovas, Giedrius Žlabys, Brandon Anderson +2 more

Fractional Chern insulators are the proposed phases of matter mimicking the physics of fractional quantum Hall states on a lattice without an overall magnetic field. The notion of Floquet fractional Chern insulators refers to the potential possibilities to generate the underlying topological band structure by means of Floquet engineering. In these schemes, a highly controllable and strongly interacting system is periodically driven by an external force at a frequency such that double tunneling events during one forcing period become important and contribute to shaping the required effective energy bands. We show that in the described circumstances it is necessary to take into account also third order processes combining two tunneling events with interactions. Referring to the obtained contributions as micromotion-induced interactions, we find that those interactions tend to have a negative impact on the stability of fractional Chern insulating phases and discuss implications for future experiments.

Continuous Transition between Bosonic Fractional Chern Insulator and Superfluid

Hongyu Lu, Han-Qing Wu, Binbin Chen +1 more

The properties of fractional Chern insulator (FCI) phases and the phase transitions between FCIs and Mott insulators in bosonic systems are well studied. The continuous transitions between FCI and superfluids (SFs), however, despite the inspiring field theoretical predictions [M. Barkeshli and J. McGreevy, Phys. Rev. B 89, 235116 (2014)PRBMDO1098-012110.1103/PhysRevB.89.235116; M. Barkeshli and J. McGreevy, Phys. Rev. B 86, 075136 (2012)PRBMDO1098-012110.1103/PhysRevB.86.075136; M. Barkeshli et al., Phys. Rev. Zhang, SciPost Phys. 15, 215 (2023)2542-465310.21468/SciPostPhys.15.5.215], have not been directly verified. The existing numerical results of the FCI-SF transition are either indirect or clearly first order. Here, by simply tuning the bandwidth of the Haldane honeycomb lattice model, we find direct transitions from a bosonic FCI at ν=1/2 filling of a flat Chern band to two SF states with bosons condensed at momenta M or Γ, respectively. While the FCI-SF(M) transition is first order, the FCI-SF(Γ) transition is found to be continuous, and the bipartite entanglement entropy at the critical point with the area-law scaling is consistent with the critical theories. Through finite-size criticality analysis, the obtained critical exponents β≈0.35(5) and ν≈0.62(12) are both compatible with those of the 3D XY universality class within numerical uncertainty and possibly more exotic beyond-Landau ones. This Letter thence presents a direct numerical demonstration of a continuous FCI-SF transition between a topologically ordered phase and a spontaneous continuous symmetry-breaking phase, and further indicates the zero-field bosonic FCI might be realized from a SF state by gradually flattening the dispersion of the Chern band, through the (quasi)adiabatic preparation in ultracold atom systems.

Non-equilibrium aspects of topological Floquet quantum systems

Lorenzo Privitera

The manifestations of topology are ubiquitous in condensed matter physics. One of the most striking examples is the integer quantum Hall effect, which served as a theoretical basis for developing many classes of new materials in the last years such as topological insulators. It has been realized that topology can manifest itself also in time-dependent quantum systems. The question that we try to address in this thesis is how much of these topological structures can be harnessed in the realistic dynamics of a periodically driven closed quantum system. We investigate two kinds of topological periodically driven systems Thouless pumping and Floquet Chern insulators. Our analysis shows that the nonequilibrium occupations of the eigenvalues of the Floquet Hamiltonian, the so called quasienergies, play a crucial role. In the case of Thouless pumping we analysed the pumped charge averaged over many cycles and discovered that the corrections to perfect quantization of the pumped charge are actually quadratic in the frequency of the driving for a suddenly switched-on driving. In the case of Floquet Chern insulators, we studied fermions on the honeycomb lattice subjected to a circularly polarised field. We found that while the quasienergy bulk states can be populated in a controlled way, edge states get unavoidable excitations due to exponentially small gaps preventing adiabaticity. These defects reflect in nonequilibrium currents flowing at the edges, that can be manipulated by tailoring the parameters of the periodic driving. Nevertheless, the nonequilibrium state undergoes a generalized form of topological transition, thanks to the controlled population of bulk states. We describe it with a generalized version of the Chern marker of Bianco and Resta
