Abstract

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances using the 5S 1/2 → 5P 3/2 → 5D 5/2 ladder-system in optically thick Rb atomic vapour are studied. We observe a strong line narrowing effect and gain at the 5S 1/2 → 5P 3/2 transition wavelength due to an energy-pooling assisted frequency conversion with characteristics similar to 4-wave mixing. As a result it is possible to observe tunable and switchable transparency resonances with amplitude close to 100% and a linewidth of 15 MHz. In addition, the large line narrowing effect allows resolution of 85 Rb 5D 5/2 hyperfine structure even in the presence of strong power broadening.

Resonant two-photon absorption and electromagnetically induced transparency in open ladder-type atomic system

Han Seb Moon, Heung‐Ryoul Noh

We have experimentally and theoretically studied resonant two-photon absorption (TPA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the open ladder-type atomic system of the 5S(1/2) (F = 1)-5P(3/2) (F' = 0, 1, 2)-5D(5/2) (F″ = 1, 2, 3) transitions in (87)Rb atoms. As the coupling laser intensity was increased, the resonant TPA was transformed to EIT for the 5S(1/2) (F = 1)-5P(3/2) (F' = 2)-5D(5/2) (F″ = 3) transition. The transformation of resonant TPA into EIT was numerically calculated for various coupling laser intensities, considering all the degenerate magnetic sublevels of the 5S(1/2)-5P(3/2)-5D(5/2) transition. From the numerical results, the crossover from TPA to EIT could be understood by the decomposition of the spectrum into an EIT component owing to the pure two-photon coherence and a TPA component caused by the mixed term.

Competition of Concentration Narrowing and Power Broadening of a Dark Resonance in a Ladder System of Rubidium Atoms: Specificities of Its Occurrence in Thin Spectroscopic Cells

Armen D. Sargsyan, Ч.С. Адамс, T. A. Vartanyan +1 more

Abstract The effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a three-level ladder system 5S1/2‒5P3/2 –5D5/2 of Rb atoms is investigated. The effect of spectral narrowing of a dark resonance (DR) as a function of atomic vapor density and thickness L of a spectroscopic cell containing Rb vapor is demonstrated. Thickness L was varied in the range of 390 nm to 4 mm, while atomic density N was increased up to ~1016 cm–3; in the process, high-intensity coupling radiation and weak probe radiation were used. The strongest effect, namely, a 22-fold spectral narrowing of the DR, was achieved in a cell of thickness L = 4 mm. The effect of spectral narrowing was decreasing with decrease in thickness L: a 2.4-fold spectral narrowing of the DR was observed at L = 2 μm. Spectral narrowing was nearly absent at L = 0.8 μm, and spectral broadening of the DR was observed with further decrease in the cell thickness down to L = 0.4 μm. A close to 100% DR contrast was achieved in nearly all cases at moderate atomic densities and high intensities of the coupling radiation. An interpretation of the effect of spectral narrowing and broadening of the DR is proposed.

Effect of buffer gas on an electromagnetically induced transparency in a ladder system using thermal rubidium vapor

Armen D. Sargsyan, David G. Sarkisyan, Ulrich Krohn +2 more

We report on the observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in a ladder system in the presence of a buffer gas. In particular, we study the $5{S}_{1/2}$-$5{P}_{3/2}\ensuremath{-}5{D}_{5/2}$ transition in thermal rubidium vapor with a neon buffer gas at a pressure of 6 Torr. In contrast to the line-narrowing effect of buffer gas on $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ systems, we show that the presence of the buffer gas leads to an additional broadening of $(34\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5)$ MHz, which suggests a cross section for Rb($5{D}_{5/2}$)--Ne of ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{k}}^{(D)}=(23\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}19} {\mathrm{m}}^{2}$. However, in the limit where the coupling Rabi frequency is larger than the collisional dephasing, a strong transparency feature can still be observed.

ATOM-WALL COLLISIONS INFLUENCE ON DARK-LINE ATOMIC RESONANCES IN SUBMICRON THIN VAPOUR CELLS

Armen D. Sargsyan, G. Hakhumyan, R. Mirzoyan +3 more

Recently it was demonstrated that miniaturization of alkali cells, i.e. the use of an extremely thin cell (ETC) for the applications using the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect, despite to intuitive expectation, does not cause a strong broadening of the dark-line (DL) linewidth. Here we present the conditions when a strong broadening of DL linewidth (more than by 10 times) can be easily observed due to atom-wall collisions influence and this could be a convenient and robust tool for atomwall (i.e. ETC's window material/temperature) collisions study. We present experimental and theoretical results on EIT realized in a Λ- system of 85Rb, D2 line, 5S-5P-5S for a Rb vapour column with the thickness L ~ λ (λ = 780 nm) and varying in the range of (0.5 to 6) λ. Two cw diode-lasers (forming the coupling and probe beams) with the linewidths of 1 MHz are used. One of the striking results observed in ETC when the coupling is resonant with the atomic transition is that DL linewidth is weakly dependent on L and this allows us to detect DL at the smallest thickness reported up to now L = 0.5 λ = 390 nm. The explanation is that the contribution of atoms flying parallel to ETC windows is enhanced thanks to their longer interaction time with the laser field. Meanwhile, direct influence of atomwall collisions on DL linewidth is well seen when there is a large detuning Δ of the coupling from the resonant transition. DL linewidth achieves ~100 MHz for the case of Δ ~100 MHz and L ~ λ, meanwhile for the coupling to be resonant, it is < 9 MHz. We present EIT (DL) spectra for different L for the coupling detuned by Δ = 60 MHz from transition Fg =2 →3′ and the probe scanned across Fg=3 → 2′,3′,4′ transitions. In this case only atoms flying in the same direction with the laser radiation participate in the formation of DL and frequent collisions with the walls cause a strong DL broadening.

Splitting of electromagnetically induced transparency under strong-probe conditions due to Doppler averaging

Kanhaiya Pandey, Vasant Natarajan A

We study the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in room-temperature Rb vapour under conditions of a strong probe laser. The atoms form a ladder system with the lower transition coupled by the probe laser and the upper transition coupled by the control laser. Density-matrix analysis of the system shows that, for zero-velocity atoms, the strong probe beam causes a reduction in absorption and broadening of the profile. But the lineshape after thermal averaging shows a splitting of the EIT resonance and enhanced absorption near line centre. The experimental observations in $^{85}Rb$ agree qualitatively with the predicted lineshapes.
