Abstract

We have experimentally and theoretically studied resonant two-photon absorption (TPA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the open ladder-type atomic system of the 5S(1/2) (F = 1)-5P(3/2) (F' = 0, 1, 2)-5D(5/2) (F″ = 1, 2, 3) transitions in (87)Rb atoms. As the coupling laser intensity was increased, the resonant TPA was transformed to EIT for the 5S(1/2) (F = 1)-5P(3/2) (F' = 2)-5D(5/2) (F″ = 3) transition. The transformation of resonant TPA into EIT was numerically calculated for various coupling laser intensities, considering all the degenerate magnetic sublevels of the 5S(1/2)-5P(3/2)-5D(5/2) transition. From the numerical results, the crossover from TPA to EIT could be understood by the decomposition of the spectrum into an EIT component owing to the pure two-photon coherence and a TPA component caused by the mixed term.

Atomic coherences of on-resonant and off-resonant two-photon absorptions in a ladder-type atomic system

Han Seb Moon, Heung‐Ryoul Noh

We report the physical origins of the on-resonant and off-resonant two-photon absorption (TPA) in an open-ladder-type atomic system of the 5S1/2(F=1)-5P3/2(F′=0,1,2)-5D5/2(F′′=1,2,3) transitions in Rb87 atoms. When the on-resonant TPA, including electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), was transformed into the off-resonant TPA according to the coupling laser frequency detuning, we clarified the dynamics of the atomic coherences by decomposing into the two-photon coherence (TC) and the crossover coherence (CC) terms mixed between one-photon coherence (OC) and TC terms. The physical origins of the two TPAs were completely different; the cause of the on-resonant TPA was the CC term, and that of the off-resonant TPA was the TC term.

Three-photon electromagnetically induced absorption in a ladder-type atomic system

Han Seb Moon, Taek Jeong

We report on three-photon electromagnetically induced absorption (TPEIA) due to three-photon coherence in ladder-type atomic systems for the $5{S}_{1/2}$-$5{P}_{3/2}$-$5{D}_{5/2}$ transition in Rb atoms. When a counterpropagating coupling field was added to the typical ladder-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) experiment, both EIT and two-photon absorption (TPA) switched to TPEIA. Considering three-photon coherence in a Doppler-broadened three-level ladder-type atomic system, the spectrum of the switch from EIT and TPA to TPEIA was numerically calculated and could be understood by decomposing the calculated spectrum into two-photon coherence and three-photon coherence components.

Relationship between two- and three-photon coherence in a ladder-type atomic system

Yoon‐Seok Lee, Heung‐Ryoul Noh, Han Seb Moon

We investigated the relationship between two- and three-photon coherence in terms of the transition routes and coupling field intensities in a Doppler-broadened ladder-type atomic system for the 5S(1/2)-5P(3/2)-5D(5/2) transition in (87)Rb atoms. Three-photon electromagnetically induced absorption (TPEIA) due to three-photon coherence was observed in the only transition route that exhibited a dominant two-photon coherence effect. We showed that two-photon coherence is a necessary condition for three-photon coherence phenomena. A comparison of the relative magnitudes of the electromagnetically induced transparency and TPEIA as a function of the coupling field intensity revealed that the increase of three-photon coherence was faster than that of two-photon coherence. Considering three-photon coherence in a Doppler-broadened ladder-type three-level atomic system, the relation between two- and three-photon coherence was numerically calculated.

Atomic coherence effects in four-wave mixing process of a ladder-type atomic system

Rb atoms. By comparing the FWM spectra with the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectra of the hyperfine states, we confirm that the FWM process is significantly influenced by both ladder-type and V-type two-photon coherences. From the observed FWM signal of each hyperfine structure, we clarify the role of two-photon coherence in the FWM process under EIT, double-resonance optical pumping (DROP), and two-photon absorption (TPA) conditions in a ladder-type atomic system, which is dependent on the open degree of the hyperfine states, the laser intensity, and the laser frequency detuning.

Electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency in a ladder-type atomic system with different dressing mechanisms

In a Doppler-broadened ladder-type Rubidium atomic system [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text], three-photon electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and transparency (EIT) in two schemes of two coupling lasers with different propagation directions are comprehensively studied. Two coupling fields are entangled tightly with each other and induce constructive interference such that we observe EIA as two coupling fields are counter-propagating. Two coupling fields are independent and cause destructive interference such that only enhanced EIT occurs when two coupling fields are co-propagating, although all of the Doppler-broadened atoms satisfy the condition for three-photon resonance. The experimental results are coincided with the numerically calculated spectra using the dressed perturbation method. The mechanisms of EIT and EIA could also be understood by the dressed-state pictures.
