Abstract

The method of operation of an atomic magnetometer based on coherent population trapping (CPT) without any requirement of radio frequency scanning is demonstrated. Using a hybrid approach comprising of polarization rotation and tailored transmission due to CPT states, the simultaneous operation of the device as atomic frequency standard as well as atomic magnetometer is investigated. The magnetometer sensitivity can be further improved by utilizing the inherent option of magnetic field assisted synchronized radio frequency scanning.

High sensitively coherent population trapping magnetometer with optically pumped degenerate atoms

Ryo Maeda, Shigeyoshi Goka

A high sensitive coherent population trapping (CPT) magnetometer with optically pumped degenerate state atoms has been developed. The CPT magnetometer in degenerate state, which does not require large magnetic field, has high sensitivity as a CPT magnetometer while keeping simple configuration. Our measurement system achieved magnetic sensitivity of 1pT/√Hz using this technique.

Experimental study of the CPT magnetometer worked on atomic energy level modulation

Guobin Liu, Sihong Gu

We have set up a coherent population trapping (CPT)-based atomic magnetometer experimental system worked with (87)Rb atoms, and with this system experimentally investigated the behaviour of a CPT magnetometer prototype proposed by us, which worked with the atomic energy level modulation scheme. Through systematical comparison with generally used microwave frequency modulation scheme, the experimental results reveal that the energy level modulation scheme not only extends the detection range, but also improves the sensitivity of magnetic field detection.

Light shift suppression in a CPT magnetometer using linear polarization and double frequency interrogation

Mario Alberto González Maldonado, Yang Li, James McKelvy +5 more

We demonstrate a suppression of the light shift in a Coherent-Population-Trapping (CPT) atomic magnetometer by using linearly polarized light and a differential measurement between magnetic resonances. The radio frequency that creates the optical sidebands for CPT quickly switches between two magnetic sensitive transitions, and the magnetic field is extrapolated from the difference of the center frequencies of the magnetic resonances. Light shifts and common drifts like collisional shifts can be suppressed through careful choice of measured resonances, and we show the light shift reduction by more than a factor of 20 compared to excitation with circularly-polarized light. Various limitations of the method are discussed.

Coherent population trapping magnetometer by differential detecting magneto–optic rotation effect

Fan Zhang, Yuan Tian, Yi Zhang +1 more

A pocket coherent population trapping (CPT) atomic magnetometer scheme that uses a vertical cavity surface emitting laser as a light source is proposed and experimentally investigated. Using the differential detecting magneto–optic rotation effect, a CPT spectrum with the background canceled and a high signal-to-noise ratio is obtained. The experimental results reveal that the sensitivity of the proposed scheme can be improved by half an order, and the ability to detect weak magnetic fields is extended one-fold. Therefore, the proposed scheme is suited to realize a pocket-size CPT magnetometer.

Simultaneously improving the sensitivity and absolute accuracy of CPT magnetometer

Shangqing Liang, Guoqing Yang, Yunfei Xu +3 more

A new method to improve the sensitivity and absolute accuracy simultaneously for coherent population trapping (CPT) magnetometer based on the differential detection method is presented. Two modulated optical beams with orthogonal circular polarizations are applied, in one of which two magnetic resonances are excited simultaneously by modulating a 3.4GHz microwave with Larmor frequency. When a microwave frequency shift is introduced, the difference in the power transmitted through the cell in each beam shows a low noise resonance. The sensitivity of 2pT/Hz @ 10Hz is achieved. Meanwhile, the absolute accuracy of ± 0.5nT within the magnetic field ranging from 20000nT to 100000nT is realized.

Vector magnetometer based on the effect of coherent population trapping

Valeriy Andryushkov, Daba A. Radnatarov, Sergey M Kobtsev

The method is presented for converting a coherent population trapping (CPT) atomic clock into a CPT vector (compass-) magnetometer without mechanically moving parts through a relatively simple add-on. The system of 3D Helmholtz coils was used for compensation of the external magnetic field, allowing measurement of both strength and direction of a magnetic field at the sensitivity level of s u b − n T / H z 1 / 2 within a 10-Hz bandwidth. Angular resolution of the developed vector magnetometer amounts to about 1 0 − 2 degrees.
