Coherent states on spheres

Abstract

We describe a family of coherent states and an associated resolution of the identity for a quantum particle whose classical configuration space is the d-dimensional sphere Sd. The coherent states are labeled by points in the associated phase space T*(Sd). These coherent states are not of Perelomov type but rather are constructed as the eigenvectors of suitably defined annihilation operators. We describe as well the Segal–Bargmann representation for the system, the associated unitary Segal–Bargmann transform, and a natural inversion formula. Although many of these results are in principle special cases of the results of Hall and Stenzel, we give here a substantially different description based on ideas of Thiemann and of Kowalski and Rembieliński. All of these results can be generalized to a system whose configuration space is an arbitrary compact symmetric space. We focus on the sphere case in order to carry out the calculations in a self-contained and explicit way.

Coherent States on Spheres

Abstract. We describe a family of coherent states and an associated resolution of the identity for a quantum particle whose classical configuration space is the d-dimensional sphere S d. The coherent states are labeled by points in the associated phase space T ∗ (S d). These coherent states are not of Perelomov type but rather are constructed as the eigenvectors of suitably defined annihilation operators. We describe as well the Segal–Bargmann representation for the system, the associated unitary Segal–Bargmann transform, and a natural inversion formula. Although many of these results are in principle special cases of the results of B. Hall and M. Stenzel, we give here a substantially different description based on ideas of T. Thiemann and of K. Kowalski and J. Rembieliński. All of these results can be generalized to a system whose configuration space is an arbitrary compact symmetric space. We focus on the sphere case in order to carry out the calculations in a self-contained and explicit way.

Coherent states for a 2-sphere with a magnetic field

Brian C. Hall, Jeffrey J. Mitchell

We consider a particle moving on a 2-sphere in the presence of a constant magnetic field. Building on our earlier work in the nonmagnetic case we construct coherent states for this system. The coherent states are labeled by points in the associated phase space, the (co)tangent bundle of S 2 . They are constructed as eigenvectors for certain annihilation operators and expressed in terms of a certain heat kernel. These coherent states are not of Perelomov type but rather are constructed according to the ‘complexifier’ approach of Thiemann. We describe the Segal–Bargmann representation associated with the coherent states which is equivalent to a resolution of the identity. This article is part of a special issue of Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical devoted to ‘Coherent states: mathematical and physical aspects’.

The Bargmann representation for the quantum mechanics on a sphere

K. Kowalski, J. Rembieliński

The Bargmann representation is constructed corresponding to the coherent states for a particle on a sphere introduced in Kowalski and Rembieliński, J. Phys. A: 33, 6035 (2000). The connection is discussed between the introduced formalism and the standard approach based on the Hilbert space of square integrable functions on a sphere S2.

The Clebsch–Gordan problem of the SL(2,R) coherent states

Debabrata Basu

The Clebsch–Gordan problems of the Barut–Girardello, and Perelomov coherent states of SL(2,R) are studied using the associated Hilbert spaces as the respective carrier spaces of the representations of the group. For the Barut–Girardello coherent states this Hilbert space is a subspace of the Bargmann–Segal Hilbert space B(C2) called the ‘‘reduced Bargmann space.’’ The generators of the group in this realization are essentially the boson operators of Holman and Biedenharn which provide a convenient starting point of the problem. For the Perelomov coherent states the associated Hilbert space turns out to be Bargmann’s canonical carrier space for the realization of the discrete series of representations, namely, the Hilbert space of functions analytic inside the open unit disc. The scalar product, the principal vector, and a complete orthonormal set in these Hilbert spaces are constructed and used for the explicit evaluation of the Clebsch–Gordan coefficients. For each of the coherent state systems the product state turns out to be the principal vector and, therefore, the coupled state itself is the Clebsch–Gordan coefficient. For the Barut–Girardello coherent states this is, apart from normalization, the product of a Bessel function and d-function. For the Perelomov coherent states, on the other hand, this closely resembles the Clebsch–Gordan coefficient of the SU(2) coherent states.

The Coherent States of the Hydrogen Atom

Didier Robert, Monique Combescure

The aim of this chapter is to present a construction of a set of coherent states for the hydrogen atom proposed by Villegas-Blas (The Laplacian on the n-sphere, the hydrogen atom and the Bargmann space representation. Ph.D. thesis, Mathematics Department, University of Virginia, 1996, [251]), Thomas and Villegas-Blas (Commun Math Phys 187:623–645, 1997, [244]). We show that in a semiclassical sense they concentrate essentially around the Kepler orbits (in configuration space) of the classical motion. A suitable unitary transformation (the Fock operator) maps the pure point subspace of the hydrogen atom Hamitonian onto the Hilbert space \(L^2({\mathbb S}^3)\) for the \(\mathbb S^3\) sphere. We study the coherent states for the \(\mathbb S^3\) sphere (as introduced by Uribe (J Funct Anal 59:535–556, 1984, [247]) and show that the action of the group SO(4) is irreducible in the space generated by the spherical harmonics of a given degree. Note that coherent states for the hydrogen atom have been extensively studied by J. Klauder and his school. We have chosen not to present them here and refer the interested reader to Klauder and Skagerstam (Coherent states, Worlds Scientific Publishing, Singapore, 1985, [167]).
