The Clebsch–Gordan problem of the SL(2,R) coherent states

Abstract

The Clebsch–Gordan problems of the Barut–Girardello, and Perelomov coherent states of SL(2,R) are studied using the associated Hilbert spaces as the respective carrier spaces of the representations of the group. For the Barut–Girardello coherent states this Hilbert space is a subspace of the Bargmann–Segal Hilbert space B(C2) called the ‘‘reduced Bargmann space.’’ The generators of the group in this realization are essentially the boson operators of Holman and Biedenharn which provide a convenient starting point of the problem. For the Perelomov coherent states the associated Hilbert space turns out to be Bargmann’s canonical carrier space for the realization of the discrete series of representations, namely, the Hilbert space of functions analytic inside the open unit disc. The scalar product, the principal vector, and a complete orthonormal set in these Hilbert spaces are constructed and used for the explicit evaluation of the Clebsch–Gordan coefficients. For each of the coherent state systems the product state turns out to be the principal vector and, therefore, the coupled state itself is the Clebsch–Gordan coefficient. For the Barut–Girardello coherent states this is, apart from normalization, the product of a Bessel function and d-function. For the Perelomov coherent states, on the other hand, this closely resembles the Clebsch–Gordan coefficient of the SU(2) coherent states.

The Barut–Girardello coherent states

Debabrata Basu

It is shown that the completeness problem of the SL(2, R) coherent states proposed by Barut and Girardello leads to a moment problem, not a Mellin transform. This moment problem, which also appears in the theory of para-Bose oscillators, has been solved following the Sharma–Mehta–Mukunda–Sudarshan solution of the problem. The matrix element of finite transformation in the coherent state basis is shown to satisfy a ‘‘quasiorthogonality’’ condition analogous to the orthogonality condition of the matrix element in the canonical basis. Finally, the Barut–Girardello ‘‘Hilbert space of entire analytic functions of growth (1,1)’’ turns out to be only a subspace of Bargmann’s well-known Hilbert space of analytic functions. This subspace, which has been called ‘‘the reduced Bargmann space’’ in a previous paper, is an invariant subspace of SL(2,R). With this identification the generators of the group in this realization turn out to be the well-known boson operators of Holman and Biedenharn.

Coherent States for Kronecker Products of Non-Compact Groups: Formulation and Applications

Bindu A. Bambah, G. S. Agarwal

We introduce and study the properties of a class of coherent states for the group SU(1,1) X SU(1,1) and derive explicit expressions for these using the Clebsch-Gordan algebra for the SU(1,1) group. We restrict ourselves to the discrete series representations of SU(1,1). These are the generalization of the `Barut Girardello' coherent states to the Kronecker Product of two non-compact groups. The resolution of the identity and the analytic phase space representation of these states is presented. This phase space representation is based on the basis of products of `pair coherent states' rather than the standard number state canonical basis. We discuss the utility of the resulting `bi-pair coherent states' in the context of four-mode interactions in quantum optics.

Coherent states of the real symplectic group in a complex analytic parametrization. II. Annihilation-operator coherent states

C. Quesne

In the present series of papers, the coherent states of Sp(2d,R), corresponding to the positive discrete series irreducible representations 〈λd+n/2,..,λ1+n/2〉, encountered in physical applications, are analyzed in detail with special emphasis on those of Sp(4,R) and Sp(6,R). The present paper discusses the annihilation-operator coherent states, i.e., the eigenstates of the noncompact lowering generators corresponding to complex eigenvalues. These states generalize the coherent states introduced by Barut and Girardello for Sp(2,R), and later on extended by Deenen and Quesne to the Sp(2d,R) irreducible representations of the type 〈(λ+n/2)d〉. When λ1,...,λd are not all equal, it was shown by Deenen and Quesne that the eigenvalues do not completely specify the eigenstates of the noncompact lowering generators. In the present work, their characterization is completed by a set of continuous labels parametrizing the (unitary-operator) coherent states of the maximal compact subgroup U(d). The resulting coherent states are therefore of mixed type, being annihilation-operator coherent states only as regards the noncompact generators. A realization in a subspace of a Bargmann space of analytic functions shows that such coherent states satisfy a unity resolution relation in the representation space of 〈λd +n/2,...,λ1+n/2〉, and therefore may be used as a continuous basis in such space. The analytic functions and the differential operators representing the representation space discrete bases and the Sp(2d,R) generators, respectively, are found in explicit form. It is concluded that the annihilation-operator coherent state representation provides the mathematical foundation for the use of differentiation operators with respect to the noncompact raising generators in symbolic expressions of the Sp(2d,R) generators. This is to be compared with the habit of replacing a boson annihilation operator by a symbolic differentiation with respect to the corresponding creation operator, accounted for by the Bargmann representation of such operators.

Dynamical group of microscopic collective states. III. Coherent state representations in d dimensions

J. Deenen, C. Quesne

The present series of papers deals with various realizations of the dynamical group 𝒮𝓅c(2d,R) of microscopic collective states for an A nucleon system in d (=1,2, or 3) dimensions, when these collective states are assumed to be invariant under the orthogonal group O(n) associated with the n=A−1 relative Jacobi vectors. In this paper, we further study the Barut–Girardello representation proposed in the first two papers of the present series to show that it may be reformulated in terms of some coherent states by generalizing to 𝒮𝓅c(2d,R) a class of Sp(2,R) coherent states introduced by Barut and Girardello. For such purpose, our starting point is another coherent state representation, namely the Perelomov one, previously considered by Kramer. We also propose a third, new class of coherent states leading to Holstein–Primakoff representation in a straightforward way. We review various properties of these three classes of coherent states, such as their reproducing kernel and measure explicit forms, their generating function properties, and the representations they lead to for both the collective states and their dynamical group.

Scalar and Vector Coherent State Representations of Compact and Non-compact Symplectic Groups

Lindsey Shorser

When solving problems involving quantum mechanical systems, it is frequently desirable to find the matrix elements of a unitary representation $T$ of a real algebraic Lie group $G$. This requires defining an inner product on the Hilbert space $\\mathbb{H}$ that carries the representation $T$. In the case where the representation is determined by a representation of a subgroup containing the lowest weight vector of $T$, this can be achieved through the coherent state construction. In both the scalar and vector coherent state methods, the process of finding the overlaps can be simplified by introducing the coherent state triplet ($\\mathfrak{F}_{\\mathbb{H}_D}$, $\\mathbb{H}_D$, $\\mathfrak{F}^{\\mathfrak{H}_D}$) of Bargmann spaces. Coherent state wave functions -- the elements of $\\mathfrak{F}_{\\mathbb{H}_D}$ and of $\\mathfrak{F}^{\\mathbb{H}_D}$ -- are used to define the inner product on $\\mathbb{H}_D$ in a way that simplifies the calculation of the overlaps. This inner product and the group action $\\Gamma$ of $G$ on $\\mathfrak{F}^{\\mathbb{H}_D}$ are used to formulate expressions for the matrix elements of $T$ with coefficients from the given subrepresentation.\n\nThe process of finding an explicit expression for $\\Gamma$ relies on matrix factorizations in the complexification of $G$ even though the representation $T$ does not extend to the complexification. It will be shown that these factorizations are, in fact, justified, that the overlaps and $\\Gamma$ action can be expressed in terms of the given subrepresentation, and that it is possible to find numerical values for the inner product in $\\mathbb{H}$. The scalar and vector coherent state methods will both be applied to Sp($n$) and Sp($n,\\mathbb{R}$).

Two-mode coherent states for SU(1,1)⊗SU(1,1)

Christopher C. Gerry, Adil Benmoussa

We study two types of coherent states for two-mode realizations of the direct product group $\mathrm{SU}(1,1)\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{SU}(1,1)$ [which is locally isomorphic to SO(2,2)] constructed from the coupling of two single-mode realizations of SU(1,1). The basis states for the relevant representations of $\mathrm{SU}(1,1)\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{SU}(1,1)$ are constructed from the SU(1,1) Clebsch-Gordon coefficients. From these, Perelomov and Barut-Giradello coherent states are constructed. Various properties of the states are discussed, and methods for generating them are proposed. Some of the states can be generated by the operation of beam splitters with two-mode squeezed vacuum states or pair coherent states as inputs. We show that a competitive two-channel two-photon process gives rise to states of the Barut-Girardello type as the steady-state solutions of the associated master equation for appropriate initial conditions.
