Comment on “Spin Transport Properties of the Quantum One-Dimensional Non-Linear Sigma Model”

Abstract

In a recent preprint (cond-mat/9905415), Fujimoto has used the Bethe ansatz to compute the finite temperature, zero frequency Drude weight of spin transport in the quantum O(3) non-linear sigma model in a magnetic field $H \neq 0$. We show here that, contrary to his claims, the results are in accord with earlier semiclassical results (Sachdev and Damle, cond-mat/9610115). We also comment on his 1/N expansion, and show that it does not properly describe the long-time correlations.

Spin Transport Properties of the Quantum One-Dimensional Non-Linear Sigma Model: an Application to Haldane Gap Systems

Satoshi Fujimoto

Spin transport properties of the quantum one-dimensional non-linear sigma model are studied based upon the Bethe ansatz exact solution for the O(3) sigma model and the 1/N-expansion approach for the O(N) sigma model. It is shown that the spin transport at finite temperatures is ballistic and there is no spin diffusion in this system. A possible mechanism for the spin diffusion observed in the NMR experiment of the Haldane gap system AgVP_2S_6 by Takigawa et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett.{\bf 76}, 2173 (1996)] is also discussed. The inclusion of the spin-phonon interaction accounts for the experimental results qualitatively.

Spin transport on the integrable XXZ chain

Shinya Ae

Using the Bethe ansatz method and generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), properties of the spin transport is analyzed for the integrable XXZ chain with the anisotropy 0 ≤ ∆ < 1.Our approach starts from reconstructing the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations for the integrable XXZ chain with arbitrary spin.We obtain the fusion hierarchy of the quantum transfer matrices (T -functions) in the arbitrary spin case, and we derive functional relations (T -and Y -systems) satisfied by the T -functions and certain combinations of them (Y -functions).Through analytical arguments, the Y -system is reduced to a set of non-linear integral equations, equivalent to the TBA equations. At first, we use the TBA equations for some higher-spin chains in order to examine the regular zero frequency contribution to the spin current correlation (spin dc conductivity) for the spin-1/2 XXZ chain. In the high temperature limit, we write down the dressed scattering kernels by one quasi-particle bare energies and exactly obtain the spin dc conductivity at zero magnetic field, which is proportional to the inverse temperature β at the β → 0 limit. We find that the high temperature proportionality constant σ reg 0 of the spin dc conductivity is discontinuous at all rational numbers of the anisotropy parameter p 0 = π/ cos -1 ∆ ≥ 2 with the gap increasing larger than the second power of growing magnetization on one quasiparticle. The isotropic ∆ = 1 point is exceptional.Close to this point, σ reg 0 slowly increases in proportion to the first power of the one quasi-particle magnetization. On the other hand, σ reg 0 is proportional to the second power of the same when p 0 approaches irrational numbers. At second, we examine the finite-temperature spin Drude weight for the integrable XXZ chain with arbitrary spin, where GHD methods are employed. We calculate the spin Drude weight at zero magnetic field, and we find a characteristic fractal-like structure of the Drude weight at arbitrary spin across a broad range of temperatures, similar to the spin-1/2 case.In our approach, the solutions to the TBA equations (i.e., the Y -functions) can be explicitly written in terms of the T -functions, thus allowing for a systematic calculation of the hightemperature limit of the Drude weight, as well as the spin dc conductivity in the spin 1/2 case. Finite temperature transport in integrable quantum many body systems

X. Zotos, Félix Naef, Peter Prelovšek

Recent developments in the analysis of finite temperature dissipationless transport in integrable quantum many body problems are presented. In particular, we will discuss: (i) the role played by the conservation laws in systems as the spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain and the one-dimensional Hubbard model, (ii) exact results obtained using the Bethe ansatz method on the long time decay of current correlations.

Haldane-gapped spin chains: Exact low-temperature expansions of correlation functions

Robert Konik

We study both the static and dynamic properties of gapped, one-dimensional, Heisenberg, antiferromagnetic, spin chains at finite temperature through an analysis of the O(3) nonlinear sigma model. Exploiting the integrability of this theory, we are able to compute an exact low-temperature expansion of the finite temperature correlators. We do so using a truncated ``form-factor'' expansion and so provide evidence that this technique can be successfully extended to finite temperature. As a direct test, we compute the static zero-field susceptibility and obtain an exact match to the susceptibility derived from the low-temperature expansion of the exact free energy. We also study transport properties, computing both the spin conductance and the NMR-relaxation rate, ${1/T}_{1}.$ We find these quantities to show ballistic behavior. In particular, the computed spin conductance exhibits a nonzero Drude weight at finite temperature and zero applied field. The physics thus described differs from the spin diffusion reported by Takigawa et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 2173 (1996)] from experiments on the Haldane gap material, ${\mathrm{AgVP}}_{2}{S}_{6}.$
