Comment on “Spin Transport Properties of the Quantum One-Dimensional Non-Linear Sigma Model”

Subir Sachdev A, Kedar Damle

In a recent preprint (cond-mat/9905415), Fujimoto has used the Bethe ansatz to compute the finite temperature, zero frequency Drude weight of spin transport in the quantum O(3) non-linear sigma model in a magnetic field $H \neq 0$. We show here that, contrary to his claims, the results are in accord with earlier semiclassical results (Sachdev and Damle, cond-mat/9610115). We also comment on his 1/N expansion, and show that it does not properly describe the long-time correlations.

Spin Transport Properties of the Quantum One-Dimensional Non-Linear Sigma Model: an Application to Haldane Gap Systems

Satoshi Fujimoto

Spin transport properties of the quantum one-dimensional non-linear sigma model are studied based upon the Bethe ansatz exact solution for the O(3) sigma model and the 1/N-expansion approach for the O(N) sigma model. It is shown that the spin transport at finite temperatures is ballistic and there is no spin diffusion in this system. A possible mechanism for the spin diffusion observed in the NMR experiment of the Haldane gap system AgVP_2S_6 by Takigawa et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett.{\bf 76}, 2173 (1996)] is also discussed. The inclusion of the spin-phonon interaction accounts for the experimental results qualitatively.

Non-linear sigma model approach to quantum spin chains

Sumathi Rao

We introduce and motivate the study of quantum spin chains on a one-dimensional lattice. We classify the varieties of methods that have been used to study these models into three categories, - a) exact methods to study specific models b) field theories to describe fluctuations about the classical ordered phases and c) numerical methods. We then discuss the $J_1$-$J_2$-$δ$ model in some detail and end with a few comments on open problems.
