IEICE Transactions on Information and Systemsに掲載された。 In recent years, Ising machines such as quantum annealing, which is expected to be a highly efficient solution method for combinatorial optimization problems, have attracted much attention. When solving a combinatorial optimization problem with an Ising machine, the combinatorial optimization problem's objective function and constraints are expressed by the energy function of the Ising model, and the ground state (minimum energy state) is searched. Each Ising machine has a different operating principle, and by designing an Ising model based on the operating principle and adjusting the hyperparameters, it is possible to perform computational processing that maximizes the Ising machine's performance. In this research project, we have studied the following three major topics. In this research project, we studied the following three topics: (1) how to introduce quantum fluctuations to maximize the performance of quantum annealing, (2) how to tune hyperparameters in Ising machines, and (3) how to explore applications of Ising machines. In (1), the performance of quantum annealing for a one-dimensional Ising spin model with randomly sized interactions was investigated based on the knowledge of statistical mechanics. It is shown that quantum annealing performance is enhanced by applying a random transverse magnetic field corresponding to the randomness of the interaction. This result is now under submission for publication (preprint version is available at arXiv:2007.07439). In (2), we analyzed how to tune the hyperparameters in the "embedding algorithm," which is essential for some Ising machines, based on statistical mechanics simulation (Monte Carlo simulation). This result was published in IEEE Access. We also summarized the bit-width reduction required for some Ising machines and published it in IEEE Transactions on Computers. In (3), we devised a method using an Ising machine for a specific combinatorial optimization problem called the subgraph detection and slot placement problem and summarized the computational processing results on an actual Ising machine. Both papers were published in IEICE Transactions on Information and Systems.
It is one of the most challenging problems in theoretical physics to elucidate how irreversible phenomena like the relaxation to thermal equilibrium arises from reversible microscopic law. In recent years, some progress has been made on our understanding of the condition under which a quantum system that is isolated from the surrounding environment relaxes towards thermal equilibrium. However, it is still a hard problem to evaluate how long time it takes for the system to thermalize. To get insights on the problem of timescale of thermalization in isolated quantum systems, we investigate an open quantum system, where artificial weak dissipation is introduced to the given isolated system. In particular, I focus on the spectral gap of the Lindbladian, which is the generator of the dissipative dynamics of such a system. According to the theoretical conjecture, the spectral gap shows discontinuity in the thermodynamic limit, and one can obtain the relaxation time by considering the double limit where the weak-dissipation limit is taken after the thermodynamic limit. I have confirmed that this conjecture is true when there are some conserved quantities like the number of particles. Moreover, I have shown that the discontinuity of the spectral gap allows us to microscopically derive the Lindblad equation, which is a fundamental equation describing the dynamics of open quantum systems, and this result is reported in the preprint. I also gave an invited talk on the above theoretical progress in the JPS annual meeting.
I developed a numerical method to investigate finite-temperature properties of strongly correlated electron systems, and applied it to some problems. At finite temperatures, many intriguing physical phenomena have been observed in experiments, such as the appearance of preformed pairs above the transition temperature of the Bose-Einstein condensation and the metal-insulator transition in geometrically frustrated systems. Therefore, it is quite important to establish a theoretical method to calculate the physical properties at finite temperatures. In quantum Monte Carlo methods, which are often used for finite-temperature calculations, it is well known that a "negative sign problem" disrupts calculations of fermionic systems, except for several special cases. In this study, I focus on the variational-cluster approach (VCA), which an infinite-system state is constructed from the state of a small-size cluster. In addition, we are also able to discuss a finite-temperature phase transition by introducing a mean-field term. Although we can in principle obtain the physical quantities of the cluster at finite temperatures by taking the canonical-ensemble average with the eigenstates obtained from the exact-diagonalization (ED) method, the size of the cluster is severely restricted. To solve this problem, we make use of the method based on thermal-pure-quantum (TPQ) state. This method can treat a relatively large cluster compared to the ED method, and thus it can suppress the finite-size effect that often appears in ED method. I investigated the validity of the method combining VCA and TPQ states. I succeeded in calculating the temperature dependence of the mean-field order parameters, the thermodynamic quantities, and the single-particle excitation spectra of the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice with this method. The result clearly shows the usefulness of this method. I am going to investigate the physical properties of the excitonic preformed pairs above the transition temperature of the excitonic-insulator phase in the future.
