Abstract

Superconducting phase shifters have a potential for an enhancement in performances of superconducting singleflux-quantum (SFQ) circuits. In this work, we examined the phase difference in the ground state for two kinds of phase shifters (PSs) with a Josephson -junction using an analog circuit simulator. The effects of an insertion of PSs to an SFQ circuit on its performance were also evaluated. キーワード:超伝導電子デバイス・回路、超伝導位相シフタKeywords:Superconducting electronic devices & circuits, Superconducting phase shifter 1.はじめに

Superconductor digital circuits with π junctions alone

Feng Li, Yuto Takeshita, Masamitsu Tanaka +1 more

We adopt superconductor/ferromagnet/insulator/superconductor (SFIS) Josephson junctions (JJs) as both switching JJs and intrinsic π phase shifters in superconductor digital circuits. The critical current density (Jc) and characteristic voltage (Vc) of the SFIS junctions are about 22 A/cm2 and 22 μV, respectively. The intrinsic π phase shift is confirmed by measuring the suppressed nominal critical current Icn and half-period-shifted modulation pattern of a π–π–π superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) that contains three π-JJs in a superconducting loop. A single-flux-quantum (SFQ) circuit composed of a DC/SFQ, Josephson transmission line (JTL), and SFQ/DC converter based on SFIS JJs alone is demonstrated at 4.2 K. The energy dissipation of the SFQ/DC converter decreases by 80% because some JJs are self-biased by the π phase shifter. The intrinsic circulating currents induced by the π phase shifters lead to a narrow bias margin (±5%) and even error function, which can be solved by parameters optimization or circuit initialization in the future. The half-modulation period (Φ0/2) of a half-flux-quantum (HFQ) SQUID (a partial HFQ JTL) exhibits propagation of HFQ between π–π–π SQUIDs, indicating that more complex HFQ circuits can be developed with π-JJs alone in the future.

Passive Phase Shifter for Superconducting Josephson Circuits

D Balashov, Boyko Dimov, M. Khabipov +6 more

Quantized values of magnetic flux trapped in a superconducting loop enable a new type of passive phase shifting elements. These elements can be incorporated into digital Josephson circuits making their design compact. We have proven the functionality of such phase shifters fabricated in conventional Nb/Al trilayer technology. We report on the successful low speed operation of a rapid single flux quantum toggle flip-flop circuit with the integrated passive pi-phase shifting element.

Implementation of superconductive passive phase shifters in high-speed integrated RSFQ digital circuits

Boyko Dimov, D Balashov, M. Khabipov +5 more

The reduction of the critical current density in rapid single-flux quantum (RSFQ) circuits enables new application fields, like quantum computing and photonic detector readout. The low current density fabrication process creates new design challenges, such as lower stability against thermal fluctuations, violation of the lumped elements condition for microstrip inductances and increased sensitivity to the technological spread. To overcome these issues, we suggest a passive phase shifter as a promising alternative technique for superconductive phase dropping in the RSFQ electronics. Here, we study experimentally their applicability in high-speed RSFQ digital circuits. Conclusions are drawn about the impact of the passive phase shifters on the complexity, the speed and the bit error rate of the investigated RSFQ circuits. We demonstrate the successful operation of different circuits with implemented passive phase shifters at low and high speeds.

Superconductive passive phase shifter for integrated RSFQ digital circuits

Boyko Dimov, D Balashov, M. Khabipov +5 more

A vital precondition for the realization of rapid single-flux quantum (RSFQ) digital circuits with reduced critical currents of the Josephson junctions is the implementation of an efficient technique for superconductive phase dropping. In this paper, we present a novel phase shifting element consisting of a miniature superconductive ring located over a ground plane hole. Contrary to the solutions reported up to now, this topology can be simply integrated within complex digital RSFQ circuits realized with conventional fabrication technology.

A single flux quantum circuit with a ferromagnet-based Josephson π-junction

M. Khabipov, D Balashov, F. Maibaum +5 more

We report on the functionality of a Nb-based superconducting single flux quantum (SFQ) toggle flip-flop (TFF) circuit, comprising a complementary superconductor–ferromagnet–superconductor (SFS) Josephson π-junction. The SFS junction was used as a phase shifting element inserted in the storage loop of the TFF. The fabricated circuits demonstrated correct functionality with the operation parameter ranges of ± 20%. The application of SFS π-junctions makes the SFQ circuits very compact, may substantially improve their stability, and may also be suitable for integration with Josephson quantum circuits (qubits).

Reconfigurable Josephson Phase Shifter

T. Golod, Razmik A. Hovhannisyan, Olena M. Kapran +3 more

Phase shifter is one of the key elements of quantum electronics. In order to facilitate operation and avoid decoherence, it has to be reconfigurable, persistent, and nondissipative. In this work, we demonstrate prototypes of such devices in which a Josephson phase shift is generated by coreless superconducting vortices. The smallness of the vortex allows a broad-range tunability by nanoscale manipulation of vortices in a micron-size array of vortex traps. We show that a phase shift in a device containing just a few vortex traps can be reconfigured between a large number of quantized states in a broad [-3π, +3π] range.
