Abstract

This paper investigates the microwave-synchronized fine-tuning of electromagnetically induced chirality in a four-level atomic system. The system is driven by two optical fields and one microwave field in an extended double-Λ configuration. Under low-density conditions, the system exhibits double electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), which can be controlled by adjusting the amplitudes of coupling fields and the phase of the microwave field. We show that, under suitable conditions of the coupling field amplitudes and microwave phase, the double EIT reduces to a single EIT as a result of multi-path quantum interference. These optical processes are elucidated using dressed-state analysis. In this context, we also examine the magnetic susceptibility and chiral coefficients. Furthermore, by incorporating local-field corrections for a high-density medium, we demonstrate broadband absorption-free negative refraction of the probe field, where neither the effective permittivity nor the permeability is required to be simultaneously negative.

Phase-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency in a four-level atom system

We present a method to control the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a four-level system with a coupling field, a weak probe field and two microwave driven fields. By sloving the density matrix equations, the numerious result is obtained. It is shown that the EIT resonance can be split into doublets and the spectral position of EIT window is determined by the relative phase between two microwave fields for fixed intensity of the microwave field. Therefore, the microwave field can be used to open more than one EIT window and by controlling their phase difference we can perform EIT frequency tuning. The structure in the spectrum can be explained using the dressed-state formalism.

Electromagnetic chirality-induced negative refraction via atomic coherence

Fuli Li, Aiping Fang, Meng Wang

Electromagnetic chirality-induced negative refraction in a four-level atomic medium is investigated by initially preparing coherent states of the atom. We show that the negative refraction can be carried out with deeply depressing absorption and without simultaneously requiring both negative electric permittivity and magnetic permeability in an ideal situation where the two chirality coefficients have the same amplitude but the opposite phase.

Negative index of refraction in a four-level system with magnetoelectric cross coupling and local field corrections

Frank Bello

This research focuses on a coherently driven four-level atomic medium with the aim of inducing a negative index of refraction while taking into consideration local field corrections as well as magnetoelectric cross coupling (i.e.,chirality) within the material's response functions. Two control fields are used to render the medium transparent for a probe field which simultaneously couples to an electric and a magnetic dipole transition, thus allowing one to test the permittivity and permeability of the material at the same time. Numerical simulations show that a negative index of refraction with low absorption can be obtained for a range of probe detunings while depending on number density and the ratio between the intensities of the control fields.

Multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in a quasi-Λ type four-level atomic system

Xiangwei Wang, Xiangyang Zhang

Using density matrix eqution, the absorption and dispersion properties of a A-type four-level system driven by coherent fields are investigated. The result obtained by means of numerical method indicates that by adjusting the intensity of Rabi frequencies of the coherent field in the steady state, three, double or single electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can appear explicitly in this system. And the explanations of these phenomena are given by using the dressed states. In the three EIT, the location of transparent windows can be manipulated by controlling the detuning of the driving field. What's more, it is also found that the medium shows a large refractive index at each transparency window, and the group velocity of the probe laser can be enhanced.

Multi-window frequency-tunable electromagnetically induced transparency

Yang Li-jun, Lianshui Zhang, Xiaoli Li +5 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance is obtained in a Λ three-level configuration when the coupling field and the probe field satisfy the two-photon resonance condition. When an additional microwave field drives the transition between two low levels of the Λ three-level system the EIT is observed to split into multiple EITs. In this paper we present a theoretical study of this effect. The results show that the EIT resonance can be split into triplet and the spectral positions of EIT windows is determined by the intensity and the frequency of the microwave field. Therefore, a microwave field can be used to open more than one EIT windows and the EIT frequency tuning can be realized by controlling intensity and frequency of the microwave field.

Phase Controlled Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Closed Cyclic Lambda Atomic System

Monika Thakran, Yashika Aneja, Satya Kesh Dubey

In this work, Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) has been studied in a microwave driven closed cyclic Lambda atomic system. It is observed that in the absence of microwave field a normal transparency window is obtained, but when a microwave field is also applied between hyperfine levels along with the optical fields an amplification and attenuation in EIT signal is observed depending upon the relative phase between fields driving the atomic system. In fact, a new probe field is generated by microwave and coupling field which interfere constructively or destructively with incident probe field leading to either amplification, attenuation or asymmetricity in probe transmission signal. Also, dependency of phase sensitive amplification on ground state decoherence is also studied. This novel, controllable and amplified EIT signal can be potentially used for the transfer of coherent microwave analog or digital message signal over larger distance using optical fibers where amplification is preliminary requirement.
