Abstract

Laser-cooled atomic ions in ion traps are expected to be applied to basic physics studies such as qubits of quantum computers and realization of precise atomic clocks. For such purpose, efficient ion loading into the ion trap is necessary. Usually, neutral atomic beams are introduced into the trap, and the ionization is carried out inside the trap. In the past, two main approaches to ionization have been implemented. One is impact ionization by thermal electrons, and the other is two-photon ionization by lasers. Collisional ionization of thermal electrons is not a suitable method for the above-mentioned applications, such as vacuum contamination. Laser photoionization has great advantages such as isotope selectivity and less contamination of the vacuum system, but has the disadvantage of low ion generation efficiency. In this study, as a novel ionization method, one-photon photoionization using incoherent light has been carried out, and laser cooling of barium ions has been actually performed. One-photon ionization occurs more often than two-photon ionization, and therefore it has high generation efficiency. Moreover, no lasers are required for ionization, and the vacuum contamination is minimized. Ultraviolet light is required for one-photon ionization. In this study, deuterium lamp and deep ultraviolet light emitting diode (UVLED) are used. Deuterium lamps generate ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 185 nm and longer. Since it has energy higher than the ionization energy of barium, it can be used for one-photon ionization. In UVLED, we try to ionize barium atoms using UVLEDs with wavelengths of 350 nm, 280 nm and 245 nm. While photon energy of UVLEDs with 350 nm and 280 nm is less than the ionization energy, 245 nm emits photons that is roughly the same as the ionization energy. Hence, one-photon ionization is expected. As a result, it has been confirmed that barium ions are indeed loaded into the ion trap by the deuterium lamp and the UV LED of wavelength 245 nm.

The aim of this study is to fabricate a small-scale "2D ion trap array". By confining and laser-cooling atomic ions in this device, the quantum state of a "frustrated system" is realized, and eventually quantum simulations of this state can be done. An ion trap is a device to confine charged particles. In this study, several small-scale ion traps are arranged in a two-dimensional configuration, and one atomic ion (barium ion is assumed) is trapped in each ion trap. The frustrated system can be realized by arranging three small ion traps in an equilateral triangle. Because of the Coulomb interaction among the ions, energy varies depending on the position of the ions. This interaction is utilized to achieve the frustrated system. During this research period, a 2D ion trap array has been designed and fabricated. In this study, the "string ion trap", which was previously fabricated, is developed further into a "twisted string ion trap". In the twisted string ion trap, all the electrodes used in the ion trap are made of thin metal strings (tungsten wires with a diameter of 0.05 mm). This allows us to observe the laser-induced fluorescence from the trapped barium ion with higher sensitivity. Additionally, by arranging the metal strings in a twisted configuration, ions can be trapped in three dimensions with fewer electrodes. By increasing the degree of twist, we can also reduce the size of the ion trap. As a result, a small-scale 2D ion trap array can be realized using the twisted string ion trap. In this study, a twisted string ion trap that consists of three small ion traps in a 2D configuration is designed, and more than 100 parts for it are fabricated. In future, these parts are to be assembled for actual operation of the ion trap.

Selective Loading of Rare Calcium Isotope 43Ca+ using Photo-Ionization

Isamu Morita, U. Tanaka, Shinji Urabe

Rare calcium isotope 43Ca+ ion (0.135%) is the only naturally abundant isotope with hyperfine structure. This isotope is considered an attractive candidate both for an optical frequency standard and for quantum information processing. We report a method to load 43Ca+ ions selectively into a linear Paul trap using a two-step, resonant photo-ionization process. Isotope selectivity is achieved by utilizing the isotope shifts for the resonant 4s2 1S0-4s4p 1P1 transition of neutral calcium. The second non-resonant excitation is achieved by an ultraviolet light emitting diode (LED). The use of an LED is simpler and more economical than using a laser for the second transition. Additionally the laser cooling of 43Ca+ is demonstrated using two ultraviolet-diode lasers and two infrared-diode lasers. Due to the hyperfine structure, the laser requirements for Doppler cooling 43Ca+ are more demanding than for the other isotopes.

An efficient method for producing 9Be+ ions using a 2 + 1 resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization process

Min Li, Yong Zhang, Qian-Yu Zhang +4 more

Abstract We report a method of creating pure 9Be+ ions by a 2 + 1 resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization for the ionization potential of 75 192.64(6) cm−1 (133 nm). The efficient generation of 9Be+ ions has been realized in a segmented linear ion trap. The average loading rates with a 10 ns, 1 mJ laser at 310 nm and 306 nm are 3.8 and 1.3 ions per pulse, respectively. This method has the advantage of reducing the electron contamination to the ion trap electrodes greatly. It also reduces the requirement of single-photon energy while satisfying the need for ionization probability and can be applied to other atoms with high ionization thresholds.

Photoionization dynamics of Mg atoms during Paul trap loading using a two-color UV laser system

Mikhail A. Aksenov, Ilia V. Zalivako, Nikita V. Semenin +8 more

Abstract Trapped ions have proven to be a powerful instrument in quantum logic, precision metrology and tests of fundamental theories. Many applications require isotopically pure ion crystals to be trapped; however, selective loading methods require either isotopically pure atom sources or dedicated ultraviolet laser systems. Here we investigate the loading dynamics of the isotopically pure magnesium ion crystals photoionized and Doppler-cooled with a two-color UV laser system at 285 nm and 280 nm. The system shares the same tapered amplifier and the first stage of a second-harmonic generation for both wavelengths, which significantly reduces the complexity and cost of the experiment. A selective loading rate of 0.05 ions s −1 was achieved, supporting theoretical evaluations.
