Abstract

The aim of this study is to fabricate a small-scale "2D ion trap array". By confining and laser-cooling atomic ions in this device, the quantum state of a "frustrated system" is realized, and eventually quantum simulations of this state can be done. An ion trap is a device to confine charged particles. In this study, several small-scale ion traps are arranged in a two-dimensional configuration, and one atomic ion (barium ion is assumed) is trapped in each ion trap. The frustrated system can be realized by arranging three small ion traps in an equilateral triangle. Because of the Coulomb interaction among the ions, energy varies depending on the position of the ions. This interaction is utilized to achieve the frustrated system. During this research period, a 2D ion trap array has been designed and fabricated. In this study, the "string ion trap", which was previously fabricated, is developed further into a "twisted string ion trap". In the twisted string ion trap, all the electrodes used in the ion trap are made of thin metal strings (tungsten wires with a diameter of 0.05 mm). This allows us to observe the laser-induced fluorescence from the trapped barium ion with higher sensitivity. Additionally, by arranging the metal strings in a twisted configuration, ions can be trapped in three dimensions with fewer electrodes. By increasing the degree of twist, we can also reduce the size of the ion trap. As a result, a small-scale 2D ion trap array can be realized using the twisted string ion trap. In this study, a twisted string ion trap that consists of three small ion traps in a 2D configuration is designed, and more than 100 parts for it are fabricated. In future, these parts are to be assembled for actual operation of the ion trap.

Laser-cooled atomic ions in ion traps are expected to be applied to basic physics studies such as qubits of quantum computers and realization of precise atomic clocks. For such purpose, efficient ion loading into the ion trap is necessary. Usually, neutral atomic beams are introduced into the trap, and the ionization is carried out inside the trap. In the past, two main approaches to ionization have been implemented. One is impact ionization by thermal electrons, and the other is two-photon ionization by lasers. Collisional ionization of thermal electrons is not a suitable method for the above-mentioned applications, such as vacuum contamination. Laser photoionization has great advantages such as isotope selectivity and less contamination of the vacuum system, but has the disadvantage of low ion generation efficiency. In this study, as a novel ionization method, one-photon photoionization using incoherent light has been carried out, and laser cooling of barium ions has been actually performed. One-photon ionization occurs more often than two-photon ionization, and therefore it has high generation efficiency. Moreover, no lasers are required for ionization, and the vacuum contamination is minimized. Ultraviolet light is required for one-photon ionization. In this study, deuterium lamp and deep ultraviolet light emitting diode (UVLED) are used. Deuterium lamps generate ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 185 nm and longer. Since it has energy higher than the ionization energy of barium, it can be used for one-photon ionization. In UVLED, we try to ionize barium atoms using UVLEDs with wavelengths of 350 nm, 280 nm and 245 nm. While photon energy of UVLEDs with 350 nm and 280 nm is less than the ionization energy, 245 nm emits photons that is roughly the same as the ionization energy. Hence, one-photon ionization is expected. As a result, it has been confirmed that barium ions are indeed loaded into the ion trap by the deuterium lamp and the UV LED of wavelength 245 nm.

Twisted radio frequency ion traps for all-metal string ion traps

Taro Hasegawa

Twisted radio frequency (rf) ion traps, which have electrode configurations that are twisted variants of conventional linear rf ion traps, have been proposed and successfully demonstrated using charged alumina dust particles. When constructed from thin metal wire electrodes, the twisted traps offer excellent optical accessibility to the trapped ions, making them suitable for applications in quantum information technology. In the experimental demonstration, 14 μm-diameter alumina dust particles were charged via discharge and successfully confined in the twisted trap. A linear chain of trapped particles was observed within the trap.

Operation of a planar-electrode ion-trap array with adjustable RF electrodes

Muir Kumph, Philip C. Holz, Klaus Langer +4 more

One path to realizing systems of trapped atomic ions suitable for large-scale quantum computing and simulation is to create a two-dimensional (2D) array of ion traps. Interactions between nearest-neighbouring ions could then be turned on and off by tuning the ions' relative positions and frequencies. We demonstrate and characterize the operation of a planar-electrode ion-trap array. By driving the trap with a network of phase-locked radio-frequency resonators which provide independently variable voltage amplitudes we vary the position and motional frequency of a Ca + ion in two-dimensions within the trap array. Work on fabricating a miniaturised form of this 2D trap array is also described, which could ultimately provide a viable architecture for large-scale quantum simulations.

A radio-frequency ion trap with string electrodes

Daisuke Kanai, Taro Hasegawa

A radio-frequency (rf) ion trap with string electrodes is introduced. In this trap configuration, the rf electrodes are made of narrow metal strings, by which a negligibly small portion of light-induced fluorescence (LIF) is blocked. Then the LIF collection solid angle can be maximized. In the demonstration, barium ions are trapped and laser-cooled in the rf trap with string electrodes successfully, and the crystallization is confirmed by the LIF spectrum.
