Abstract

The storage of a signal of a single-photon source based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled MgO:PPLN crystal in a quantum memory based on an atomic frequency comb in an isotopically pure $$^{{{\text{143}}}}{\text{Nd}}{\kern 1pt} {\text{:}}{\kern 1pt} {{{\text{Y}}}^{{\text{7}}}}{\text{Li}}{{{\text{F}}}_{{\text{4}}}}$$ crystal has been demonstrated.

Preparation of single-photon states via cavity-assisted spontaneous parametric down-conversion for quantum memory based on Y7LiF4:Nd3+ crystal

We report on the realization of a tunable single-photon source compatible with quantum memories based on isotopically pure Y7LiF4 crystals doped with Nd3+ ions. The source is based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a PPLN crystal placed in a resonator. The latter is formed by two mirrors which are transparent for the pump (532 nm) and idler (1377 nm) fields but high reflective for the signal field (867 nm). The width of the second-order cross-correlation function between the signal and idler photons is determined to be 1.5 ns for the cavity length of 8 cm, which corresponds to a cavity bandwidth of 100 MHz.

Quantum Memory Based on a Eu:YSO Crystal: the Storage and Retrieval of Single-Photon States Generated via Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

The storage of single photons generated via nondegenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a cavity with a PPKTP crystal in quantum memory based on an atomic frequency comb in a Eu:YSO crystal is demonstrated. A technique for preparing spectral profiles within the absorption line of a doped crystal that are matched to the spectrum of single-photon radiation is developed. For storage times of 250 and 166 ns, quantum memory efficiencies of 3 and 7% have been obtained with signal-to-noise ratios of 1/4 and 1/2, respectively.

We present experimental results on the generation of narrow-band single-photon states via cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a PPLN crystal and demonstrate the feasibility of conditional preparation of single 867-nm photons with a 70-MHz linewidth, compatible with optical quantum memory devices based on Nd 3+ -doped isototopically pure Y 7 LiF 4 crystals.

Ultra-bright narrow-band down-conversion source for atom-photon interaction

There has been increasing interest in the generation of such photon pairs using a spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) source inside an optical cavity to enhance the down-conversion into modes resonant to the cavity, each of the modes having a MHz spectrum. These optical parametric oscillators (OPO) operated far below threshold also provide a well defined spatial mode. Our setup consists of a bow-tie cavity with a periodically poled KTP crystal as nonlinear medium, phase-matched for parametric down-conversion. This photon-pair source is designed to provide photons suitable for interaction with atoms. These photons could be directly used in applications towards a quantum memory of light, like in experiments on slow light or the storage of single photons in EIT media. In this way an optical polarization rotation in an atomic sample could be measured achieving super-resolution.

We report on the realization of a tunable source of correlated photon pairs compatible with telecommunication networks and quantum memories involving dielectric crystals doped by Nd 3+ ions. The source is based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a 25 mm periodically poled lithium niobate crystal pumped by 532 nm cw laser. Spectral and correlation characteristics of the corresponding heralded single-photon source compatible with quantum memories are presented.
