Abstract

We present experimental results on the generation of narrow-band single-photon states via cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a PPLN crystal and demonstrate the feasibility of conditional preparation of single 867-nm photons with a 70-MHz linewidth, compatible with optical quantum memory devices based on Nd 3+ -doped isototopically pure Y 7 LiF 4 crystals.

Preparation of single-photon states via cavity-assisted spontaneous parametric down-conversion for quantum memory based on Y7LiF4:Nd3+ crystal

D O Akat’ev, Латыпов Ильнур Зиннурович, Andrey V. Shkalikov +1 more

We report on the realization of a tunable single-photon source compatible with quantum memories based on isotopically pure Y7LiF4 crystals doped with Nd3+ ions. The source is based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a PPLN crystal placed in a resonator. The latter is formed by two mirrors which are transparent for the pump (532 nm) and idler (1377 nm) fields but high reflective for the signal field (867 nm). The width of the second-order cross-correlation function between the signal and idler photons is determined to be 1.5 ns for the cavity length of 8 cm, which corresponds to a cavity bandwidth of 100 MHz.

Латыпов Ильнур Зиннурович, A. V. Shkalikov, D O Akat’ev +1 more

We report on the realization of a tunable source of correlated photon pairs compatible with telecommunication networks and quantum memories involving dielectric crystals doped by Nd 3+ ions. The source is based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a 25 mm periodically poled lithium niobate crystal pumped by 532 nm cw laser. Spectral and correlation characteristics of the corresponding heralded single-photon source compatible with quantum memories are presented.

Ultra-narrowband photon pair source for solid state quantum memories based on widely non-degenerate cavity-enhanced downconversion

Daniel Rieländer, J. Fekete, Matteo Cristiani +1 more

We present a source of ultra-narrow band, widely non degenerate photon pairs source compatible with quantum repeaters architectures. One photon is compatible with a solid state Praseodymium (Pr3+) doped crystal spin wave quantum memory, and the other photon is at telecommunication wavelengths, such that it can be transmitted over large distances in optical fibers. Pr3+doped solids absorbing photons at 606 nm have shown very promising properties as QM for light. Despite this fact, so far no experiment demonstrated storage of quantum light in Pr3+doped crystals. The main challenge to realize such a source is that the bandwidth of the memory is limited to a few MHz by the excited state spacing of the ions. To achieve the required narrow linewidth we use widely non-degenerate cavity enhanced spontaneous down conversion (SPDC). We measure a correlation time of 104 ns, the longest reported to date for SPDC emitted photons, corresponding to around 2 MHz bandwidth. In addition, the number of longitudinal modes emitted by the source is strongly reduced, thanks to a clustering effect, which facilitates the filtering to reach single mode operation.

Generation of Narrow-Band Polarization-Entangled Photon Pairs for Atomic Quantum Memories

Xiao‐Hui Bao, Yong Qian, Jian Hua Yang +4 more

We report an experimental realization of a narrow band polarization-entangled photon source with a linewidth of 9.6 MHz through cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion. This linewidth is comparable to the typical linewidth of atomic ensemble-based quantum memories. Single-mode output is realized by setting a reasonable cavity length difference between different polarizations, using of temperature controlled etalons and actively stabilizing the cavity. The entangled property is characterized with quantum state tomography, giving a fidelity of 94% between our state and a maximally entangled state. The coherence length is directly measured to be 32 m through two-photon interference.

Statistics of Narrow-Band Single Photons for Quantum Memories Generated by Ultrabright Cavity-Enhanced Parametric Down-Conversion

Matthias Scholz, Lars Koch, Oliver J. Benson

Narrow-band single photons represent an important resource for quantum memories due to their efficient interaction with atomic resonances. In this Letter, we report on the generation of photons with 3 MHz linewidth by cavity-enhanced parametric down-conversion and demonstrate direct proof of their single-photon character by detection of heralding idler photons. Compared to a Poissonian source, a suppression of higher-order photon numbers by nearly 2 orders of magnitude could be achieved. Moreover, the brightness of our source exceeds previous realizations by more than a factor of 100.
