Abstract

Due to the complexity of lattice models of statistical physics, there is interest in developing new approaches to study them, including those using quantum technologies. In this paper, we describe and implement a scheme for applying the Variational Quantum Eigensolver to the problem of finding the free energy and magnetization in the thermodynamic limit of the -chain generalized planar Ising model with the interaction of nearest neighbors, next nearest neighbors, and plaquette interactions. The calculation of Rayleigh quotient for transfer matrix is described in detail for . Using special parameterizations of the state of the system of qubits and transfer matrix decomposition, free energy and magnetization are calculated for 3-chain model on a quantum computer emulator. The entire computation process, including quantum computer emulation, is implemented using the Python programming language. Also, a method is proposed for significant acceleration of calculations (by about 10,000 times) on the emulator for considered models. Confidence intervals are constructed for the found characteristics of the model.

Disorder Solutions for Generalized Ising Model with Multispin Interaction

Pavel Khrapov

This study demonstrates a development of convenient formulae for obtaining the value of the free energy in the thermodynamic limit on a set of exact disorder solutions depending on four parameters for a 2D generalized Ising model in an external magnetic field with the interaction of nearest neighbors, next nearest neighbors, all kinds of triple interactions and the four interactions for the planar model, and for the 3D generalized Ising model in an external magnetic field with all kinds of interactions in the tetrahedron formed by four spins: at the origin of the coordinates and the closest to it along three coordinate axes in the first coordinate octant. Lattice models are considered with boundary conditions with a shift (similar to helical ones), and a cyclic closure of the set of all points (in natural ordering). For both the planar model and the 3D model, elementary transfer matrices with nonnegative matrix elements are constructed, while the free energy in the thermodynamic limit is equal to the Napierian logarithm of the maximum eigenvalue of the transfer matrix. This maximum eigenvalue can be found for a special kind of eigenvector with positive components. The region of existence of these solutions is described. The examples show the existence of nontrivial solutions of the resulting systems of equations for plane and threedimensional generalized Ising models. The system of equations and the value of free energy in the thermodynamic limit will remain the same for plane and threedimensional models with Hamiltonians, in which the value of the maximum in the natural ordering of the spin is replaced by the value of the spin at almost any other point in the lattice, this significantly expands the set of models having disordered exact solutions. The high degree of symmetry and repeatability of the components of the found eigenvectors, disappearing when we go beyond the framework of the obtained set of exact solutions, are the reason for the search for phase transitions in the vicinity of this set of disordered solutions.

Ground-state energies of Ising models calculated using the samples from a quantum computer that simulates short-time evolution

John P. T. Stenger, C. Stephen Hellberg, Daniel Gunlycke

We find the ground-state energy of the Ising model using the Cascaded Variational Quantum Eigensolver (CVQE) algorithm with the Guided-Sampling Ansatz (GSA) using up to 63 qubits on a quantum computer. We study a heavy-hex lattice to match the qubit architecture, allowing us to perform calculations in the quantum utility regime. We study both a homogeneous and random-coupling model. We locate the boundary of acceptable quantum errors as a function of the number of qubits and coupling strength. An entropic analysis is performed giving insights into the quantum computing performance. A subspace analysis is performed that suggests that the Ising model is especially suited for near-term quantum computing.

Fourier Transform of Transfer Matrices of Plane Ising Models

Pavel Khrapov

This work demonstrates the Fourier transform of the elementary transfer matrix of the generalized twodimensional Ising model with special boundary conditions with a shift (screw type) with the form of a Hamiltonian covering the classical Ising model with an external field, as well as models equivalent to models on a triangular lattice with a chessboard type Hamiltonian (the author plans to consider the general form of interaction in the following publication). Its limit representation is obtained in the form of a sum of integral operators with the size of the system tending to infinity. This allows the actual problem of finding the maximum eigenvalue of the limiting elementary transfer matrix (its Napierian logarithm is equal to the free energy of the system) to be brought to finding the maximum eigenvalue of the sum of integral operators of a fairly simple form. This approach can help solve the problems associated with the large size of the transfer matrices.

Variational methods for simulating the quantum dynamics of Ising spin chains

Mohamed Barhoumi, Milad Ghadimi, Muhammad Idham Habibie +2 more

Variational quantum time evolution is a fundamental issue in physics and engineering. It provides a strong framework for modeling the dynamics of quantum states, which is essential for efficiently running quantum networks. It presents an excellent toolkit that can improve the efficacy, reliability, resilience and performance of quantum networks, opening the door to more sophisticated distributed computer systems, quantum communication, and other quantum technologies. The imaginary time evolution of quantum systems is one useful tool that enables the generation of ground or thermal states. In this work, we address standard variational principles, such as the Dirac and Frenkel variational principles, the McLachlan variational principle and the time-dependent variational principle to model real-time dynamics, as well as the Rayleigh–Ritz approach to address static challenges. We also present the variational quantum time evolution VarQITE and VarQRTE formalism in the density matrix method, which is not influenced by the global phase of the quantum state. We calculate the ground-state energy of our quantum Ising spin chain, using VarQITE with different interaction energies J , where three cases are considered. In the non-interacting ( NI ) case ( J = 0 ), we show that the energy of the ground state accomplished with VarQITE converges to an energy of − 2 . 00 Hartree at t = 1 . 1 seconds. In the Ferromagnetic ( FM ) interaction case ( J > 0 ), four scenarios are used to obtain the energy of the Hamiltonian. We show that the convergence and the energy 〈 H 〉 are sensitive to the energy of interaction J . Furthermore, the influence of the negative values of J < 0 , which correspond to the antiferromagnetic ( AFM ) case, on the energy of the ground state is also studied. We find that VarQITE and the exact classical solution are matched. We also investigated the expectation values for magnetization 〈 m z 〉 , employing VarQRTE and the exact classical solution. The NI, FM, and AFM cases are accomplished here. We find that when the spins are not interacting, 〈 m z 〉 = 0 , while it oscillates over time t when J > 0 and J < 0 . We believe that our outcomes will improve our knowledge of the variational quantum time evolution and lead to a better understanding of real and imaginary time evolution of quantum systems (which form a quantum network) and therefore, to more information on the time in networks.

Disorder Solutions for Generalized Ising and Potts Models with Multispin Interaction

Pavel Khrapov

In this work, a special elementary transfer matrix is constructed for generalized Ising models and Potts models with the general form of a finite Hamiltonian with a multi-spin interaction in a space of arbitrary dimensionality, the Napierian logarithm of its maximum eigenvalue is equal to the free energy of the system. In some cases, it was possible to obtain an explicit form of the eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigenvalue of the elementary transfer matrix. On this basis we obtained systems of nonlinear equations for the interaction coefficients of the Hamiltonian for finding the exact value of the free energy on a set of disorder solutions. Using the Levenberg-Marquardt method, the existence of nontrivial solutions of the resulting systems of equations for plane and three-dimensional Ising models was shown. In some special cases (the 2D Ising model, the interaction potential, including the interaction of the next nearest neighbors and quadruple interactions; the 3D model with a special Hamiltonian symmetric relative to the change of all spin signs, for which it is possible to reduce the system of equations to the system for a planar model) three parameters are written in explicit form. The domain of existence of these solutions is described.
