Security functionality handled by higher layers of OSI model is a costly affair due to key management and complex mathematical encryption-decryption mechanisms in the scalable networks like wireless sensor networks (WSNs). WSN consists of resource constrained tiny sensor nodes for which battery is their lifetime. Physical layer security is the cost effective solution for such adhoc networks. The cooperative diversity mechanism makes use of the benefits of wireless sensor network scalability in terms of cooperative resource sharing in which multiple diversity channels are created which results into improved wireless connectivity. Cooperative jamming principle is used where the source transmits the encoded signal and at the same time relay transmits the weighted jamming signal to increase the equivocation of the eavesdropper. This work proposes a novel cooperative jamming mechanism for scalable networks like Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) which makes use of friendly interference to confuse the eavesdropper and increase its uncertainty about the source message. Channel fading is exploited to achieve perfect secrecy. The full communication link is built with the help of Information theoretic source and channel coding mechanisms. The whole idea is to make use of normally inactive relay nodes in the selective Decode and Forward cooperative communication and make them work as cooperative jamming sources to increase the equivocation of the eavesdropper. In this work, eavesdropper’s channel’s equivocation is compared with the main channel in terms of mutual information and secrecy capacity.

Interference is generally considered as the redundant and unwanted occurrence in wireless communication. The environment of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) makes the communication not only have the broadcast nature of wireless transmission, but also be limited to the low power and communication capability of sensor equipment. Both of them make it hard to ensure the confidentiality of communication. In this paper, we propose a cluster-based cooperative jamming scheme based on physical layer security for WSNs. The mathematical principle of the scheme is based on the design principle of code division multiple access. By using the orthogonality of orthogonal vectors, the legitimate receiver can effectively eliminate the noise, which is generated by the cooperative jamming nodes to disturb the eavesdropper. This scheme enables the legitimate receiver to ensure a strong communication confidentiality even if there is no location or channel advantage comparing with eavesdroppers. Through extensive simulations, the security performance of the proposed scheme is investigated in terms of secrecy rate.
The broadcast nature of wireless communications makes the propagation medium vulnerable to security attacks such as eavesdropping and jamming from adversarial or unauthorized users. Applying physical layer secrecy approaches will enable the exchange of confidential messages over a wireless medium in the presence of unauthorized eavesdroppers, without using any secret keys. However, physical layer security approaches are typically feasible only when the source-eavesdropper channel is weaker than the source-destination channel. Cooperative jamming can be used to overcome this challenge and increase the secrecy rate. In this paper, the security of two-phase relaying system with multiple intermediate nodes and in the presence of an eavesdropper is investigated. To enhance the system secrecy rate, a joint cooperative beamforming and jamming combined with relay and jammer selections is proposed. In phase I, the source node broadcasts a signal to relays while three intermediate nodes (which act as jammers) help the source node by transmitting random jamming signals to confuse the eavesdropper. Since the friendly (cooperative) jammers create interference for both the intended relays and the eavesdropper, optimal beamforming is applied such that no interference is caused at two preselected desired relays (that are going to receive the confidential massage in phase I). In phase II, two preselected relays transmit the source message with beamforming coefficients such that the received signal at the eavesdropper is completely nulled out. Our goal in this paper is to minimize the received SNR at the eavesdropper while increasing it at the destination as much as possible by applying different methods such as cooperative beamforming, cooperative jamming and relay selection. To avoid operational complexity, we consider the minimum number of intermediate nodes that are necessary without losing the performance. Numerical results demonstrate the advantage of our proposed scheme compared with the scheme with no cooperative jamming.
We employed node cooperation in a cooperative wireless network to achieve physical layer- based security. The case of a source-destination pair that works with the assistance of multiple cooperating nodes in the presence of an eavesdropper was considered in this study to improve the performance of secure wireless communications. A novel cooperative scheme, called the decode-and-forward plus cooperative jamming (DFCJ), was proposed. In this scheme, relay nodes transmit a weighted version of the source signals plus a common weighted jamming signal to confound the eavesdropper. The novel system design was proposed to determine cooperative node weights and transmit power allocation. In DFCJ, a closed-form solution is obtained to minimize the total transmit power that is subjected to a secrecy rate constraint under complete nulling of jamming signals at the destination. The results of the numerical evaluation of the transmit power and the obtained secrecy rate show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the performance of wireless physical layer security compared with the original decode-and-forward scheme.
In a cooperative wireless network, we exploited node cooperation for achieving physical layer based security. In this paper, the case of one source-destination pair with the help of multiple cooperating nodes(relay nodes and jamming nodes) in the presence of one eavesdropper was considered to improve the performance of secure wireless communications. A novel cooperative scheme joint decode-and-forward and cooperative jamming(JDFCJ) was proposed. In this scheme, the relay nodes transmit a weighted version of the source signals and the jamming nodes just transmit a common weighted jamming signal to confound the eavesdropper. The novel system design is proposed to minimize the transmit power subject to a secrecy rate constraint. For JDFCJ, the optimal power allocation is obtained in closed-form in the condition of the complete nulling of jamming signals at the destination. The numerical evaluation of the transmit power results shows that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the performance of secure wireless communications, as compared to the DF scheme.
Physical (PHY) layer security approaches for wireless communications can prevent eavesdropping without upper layer data encryption. However, they are hampered by wireless channel conditions: absent feedback, they are typically feasible only when the source-destination channel is better than the source-eavesdropper channel. Node cooperation is a means to overcome this challenge and improve the performance of secure wireless communications. This paper addresses secure communications of one source-destination pair with the help of multiple cooperating relays in the presence of one or more eavesdroppers. Three cooperative schemes are considered: decode-and-forward (DF), amplify-and-forward (AF), and cooperative jamming (CJ). For these schemes, the relays transmit a weighted version of a reencoded noise-free message signal (for DF), a received noisy source signal (for AF), or a common jamming signal (for CJ). Novel system designs are proposed, consisting of the determination of relay weights and the allocation of transmit power, that maximize the achievable secrecy rate subject to a transmit power constraint, or, minimize the transmit power subject to a secrecy rate constraint. For DF in the presence of one eavesdropper, closed-form optimal solutions are derived for the relay weights. For other problems, since the optimal relay weights are difficult to obtain, several criteria are considered leading to suboptimal but simple solutions, i.e., the complete nulling of the message signals at all eavesdroppers (for DF and AF), or the complete nulling of jamming signal at the destination (for CJ). Based on the designed relay weights, for DF in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers, and for CJ in the presence of one eavesdropper, the optimal power allocation is obtained in closed-form; in all other cases the optimal power allocation is obtained via iterative algorithms. Numerical evaluation of the obtained secrecy rate and transmit power results show that the proposed design can significantly improve the performance of secure wireless communications.
