Abstract

We reconsider the model of quantum mechanics violation in the K 0 -K0 system, due to Ellis, Hagelin, Nanopoulos, and Srednicki, in which CP-and CPT -violating signatures arise from the evolution of pure states into mixed states. We present a formalism for computing time-dependent asymmetries in this model and show that present data constrains its parameters significantly. In the future, this model will be put to very stringent tests at a φ factory. We present the theory of these tests and show the relation between particular φ decay correlations and the parameters of quantum mechanics violation.

Testing violation of CPT and quantum mechanics in the K{sub 0} {minus} {bar K}{sub 0} system

Patrick Huet

I report a recent study made in collaboration with M.E. Peskin, on the time dependence of a kaon beam propagating according to a generalization of quantum mechanics due to Ellis, Hagelin, Nanopoulos and Srednicki, in which CP- and CPT-violating signatures arise from the evolution of pure states to mixed states. Constraints on the magnitude of its parameters are established on the basis of existing experimental data. New facilities such as {phi} factories are shown to be particularly adequate to study this generalization from quantum mechanics and to disentangle its parameters from other CPT violating perturbations of the kaon system.

T and CPT symmetries in entangled neutral meson systems

J. Bernabéu

Genuine tests of an asymmetry under T and/or CPT transformations imply the interchange between in-states and out-states. I explain a methodology to perform model-independent separate measurements of the three CP, T and CPT symmetry violations for transitions involving the decay of the neutral meson systems in B- and Φ-factories. It makes use of the quantum-mechanical entanglement only, for which the individual state of each neutral meson is not defined before the decay of its orthogonal partner. The final proof of the independence of the three asymmetries is that no other theoretical ingredient is involved and that the event sample corresponding to each case is different from the other two. The experimental analysis for the measurements of these three asymmetries as function of the time interval Δt > 0 between the first and second decays is discussed, as well as the significance of the expected results. In particular, one may advance a first observation of true, direct, evidence of Time-Reserval-Violation in B-factories by many standard deviations from zero, without any reference to, and independent of, CP-Violation. In some quantum gravity framework the CPT-transformation is ill-defined, so there is a resulting loss of particle-antiparticle identity. This mechanism induces a breaking of the EPR correlation in the entanglement imposed by Bose statistics to the neutral meson system, the so-called ω -effect. I present results and prospects for the ω -parameter in the correlated neutral meson-antimeson states.

Peccate fortiter! or probing CPT invariance & novel tests of quantum mechanics in φ →

I. I. Bigi

A review of the experimental status of CPT invariance leads to two conclusions: (i) There is no hint of a CPT violation in the data. (ii) CPT invariance has not been probed with a quantitative sensitivity that greatly exceeds that achieved in studies of CP symmetry. I sketch some models where CPT violations could be implemented. Yet it is hard to see how those types of ansatz could generate observable effects in the transitions of neutral K mesons. On the other hand the quite special quantum aspects of the reaction φ → KL KS can be harnessed to probe quantum mechanics in novel ways by analyzing EPR like correlations of a kind that have not been studied before. Some comparisons are made with Weinberg's recent formulation of non-linear (though homogenous) quantum mechanics and with generalizations that can be obtained from Bohm's interpretation of quantum mechanics.

Tests of CPT symmetry and quantum mechanics with experimental data from CPLEAR

R. Adler, Angelos Angelopoulos, A. J. Apostolakis +96 more

We use fits to recent published CPLEAR data on neutral kaon decays to π+π− and πeν to constrain the CPT-violation parameters appearing in a formulation of the neutral kaon system as an open quantum-mechanical system. The obtained upper limits of the CPT-violation parameters are approaching the range suggested by certain ideas concerning quantum gravity.
