Peccate fortiter! or probing CPT invariance & novel tests of quantum mechanics in φ →

Abstract

A review of the experimental status of CPT invariance leads to two conclusions: (i) There is no hint of a CPT violation in the data. (ii) CPT invariance has not been probed with a quantitative sensitivity that greatly exceeds that achieved in studies of CP symmetry. I sketch some models where CPT violations could be implemented. Yet it is hard to see how those types of ansatz could generate observable effects in the transitions of neutral K mesons. On the other hand the quite special quantum aspects of the reaction φ → KL KS can be harnessed to probe quantum mechanics in novel ways by analyzing EPR like correlations of a kind that have not been studied before. Some comparisons are made with Weinberg's recent formulation of non-linear (though homogenous) quantum mechanics and with generalizations that can be obtained from Bohm's interpretation of quantum mechanics.

Search for CPT violation and decoherence effects in the neutral kaon system

ANTONIO DI DOMENICO

The neutral kaon system offers a unique possibility to perform fundamental tests of CPT invariance, as well as of the basic principles of quantum mechanics. The most recent limits on several kinds of possible CPT violation and decoherence mechanisms, which in some cases might be justified in a quantum gravity framework, are reviewed, including the latest results obtained by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE e + e - collider. No deviation from the expectations of quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry is observed, while the precision of the measurements, in some cases, reaches the interesting Planck scale region.

Testing CPT and Quantum Mechanics in the K_0-Kbar_0 System

Patrick Huet

I report a recent study done in collaboration with M.E. Peskin, on the time dependence of a kaon beam propagating according to a generalization of quantum mechanics due to Ellis, Hagelin, Nanopoulos and Srednicki, in which CP- and CPT-violating signatures arise from the evolution of pure states to mixed states. Constraints on the magnitude of its parameters are established on the basis of existing experimental data. New facilities such as phi-factories are shown to be particularly adequate to study this generalization from \qm\ and to disentangle its parameters from other CPT violating perturbations of the kaon system. Tests of CPT symmetry and quantum mechanics with experimental data from CPLEAR

R. Adler, Angelos Angelopoulos, A. J. Apostolakis +96 more

We use fits to recent published CPLEAR data on neutral kaon decays to π+π− and πeν to constrain the CPT-violation parameters appearing in a formulation of the neutral kaon system as an open quantum-mechanical system. The obtained upper limits of the CPT-violation parameters are approaching the range suggested by certain ideas concerning quantum gravity.

Review on CPT and decoherence measurements with Kaons

Marianna Testa

Neutral kaons provide one of the most sensitive systems to test quantum mechanics and CPT violation. In the first part of this report I review the results on CPT violation searches in the kaon system from the CPLEAR, KLOE and KTeV experiments. In the second part, I report tests of quantum coherence related to CPT violation, performed at CPLEAR and KLOE by studying the time evolution of the kaon system. The results show no deviations from the expectations of quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry, and the accuracy reaches the interesting region of the Planck's scale.
