Testing CPT and Quantum Mechanics in the K_0-Kbar_0 System

Patrick Huet

arXivHTMLPDF

Abstract

I report a recent study done in collaboration with M.E. Peskin, on the time dependence of a kaon beam propagating according to a generalization of quantum mechanics due to Ellis, Hagelin, Nanopoulos and Srednicki, in which CP- and CPT-violating signatures arise from the evolution of pure states to mixed states. Constraints on the magnitude of its parameters are established on the basis of existing experimental data. New facilities such as phi-factories are shown to be particularly adequate to study this generalization from \qm\ and to disentangle its parameters from other CPT violating perturbations of the kaon system. ( To appear in Proceedings of the First International Conference on Phenomenology of Unification from Present to Future, Roma, ITALY -- March 23-26, 1994.)

Violation of CPT and Quantum Mechanics in the K0 - Anti-K0 System

Michael E. Peskin

We reconsider the model of quantum mechanics violation in the K 0 -K0 system, due to Ellis, Hagelin, Nanopoulos, and Srednicki, in which CP-and CPT -violating signatures arise from the evolution of pure states into mixed states. We present a formalism for computing time-dependent asymmetries in this model and show that present data constrains its parameters significantly. In the future, this model will be put to very stringent tests at a φ factory. We present the theory of these tests and show the relation between particular φ decay correlations and the parameters of quantum mechanics violation.

Violation of CPT and quantum mechanics in the − system

Patrick Huet, Michael E. Peskin

We reconsider the model of quantum mechanics violation in the K0−K0 system, due to Ellis, Hagelin, Nanopoulos, and Srednicki, in which CP- and CPT-violating signatures arise from the evolution of pure states into mixed states. We present a formalism for computing time-dependent asymmetries in this model and show that present data constrains its parameters significantly. In the future, this model will be put to very stringent tests at a ø-factory. We present the theory of these tests and show the relation between particular ø-decay correlations and the parameters of quantum mechanics violation.

Tests of CPT symmetry and quantum mechanics with experimental data from CPLEAR

R. Adler, Angelos Angelopoulos, A. J. Apostolakis +96 more

We use fits to recent published CPLEAR data on neutral kaon decays to π+π− and πeν to constrain the CPT-violation parameters appearing in a formulation of the neutral kaon system as an open quantum-mechanical system. The obtained upper limits of the CPT-violation parameters are approaching the range suggested by certain ideas concerning quantum gravity.

Quantum mechanics and CPT tests with neutral kaons at the KLOE experiment

I. Balwierz-Pytko, Babusci, D., D. Badoni +72 more

Neutral kaons produced in the correlated pairs at the DAΦNE $\phi$ -factory offer unique possibilities to perform fundamental tests of CPT invariance, as well as of the basic principles of quantum mechanics. The analysis of the data collected by the KLOE experiment allows to improve results on several parameters describing CPT violation and decoherence, and to measure the regeneration cross section on the beam pipe materials.

Review on CPT and decoherence measurements with Kaons

Marianna Testa

Neutral kaons provide one of the most sensitive systems to test quantum mechanics and CPT violation. In the first part of this report I review the results on CPT violation searches in the kaon system from the CPLEAR, KLOE and KTeV experiments. In the second part, I report tests of quantum coherence related to CPT violation, performed at CPLEAR and KLOE by studying the time evolution of the kaon system. The results show no deviations from the expectations of quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry, and the accuracy reaches the interesting region of the Planck's scale.
