Phonon Mediated Collective Dynamics of Coherently Pumped Two-Level Emitters

Abstract

"We investigate the collective quantum dynamics of an ensemble of two-level emitters, embedded in a crystal, and coherently pumped by a moderately intense, and externally applied coherent electromagnetic field. The ensemble is damped preponderantly via the surrounding phonon reservoir which mediates the inter-particle collective interactions. We have found that generally phonon transitions among the corresponding dressed states are taking place involving simultaneously many single emitters or pairs of two-level emitters, respectively. In both cases the phonon intensity can be proportional to the squared number of involved two-level emitters."

Entanglement of a laser-driven pair of two-level qubits via its phonon environment

Elena Cecoi, Viorel Ciornea, Аурелиан Исар +1 more

The entanglement dynamics of a laser-pumped two-level quantum dot pair is investigated in the steady state. The closely spaced two-level emitters, embedded in a semiconductor substrate, interact with both the environmental vacuum modes of the electromagnetic field reservoir as well as with the lattice vibrational phonon thermostat. We have found that the entanglement among the pair’s components is substantially enhanced due to the presence of the phonon subsystem. The reason is phonon-induced decay among the symmetrical and antisymmetrical two-qubit collective states and, consequently, the population of the latter one. This also means that through thermal phonon bath engineering one can access the subradiant two-particle cooperative state.

Quantum dynamics of a two-level emitter with a modulated transition frequency

Mihai Macovei, Christoph H. Keitel

The resonant quantum dynamics of an excited two-level emitter is investigated via classical modulation of its transition frequency while simultaneously the radiator interacts with a broadband electromagnetic field reservoir. The frequency of modulation is selected to be of the order of the bare-state spontaneous decay rate. In this way, one can induce quantum interference effects, and consequently, quantum coherences among multiple decaying transition pathways. Depending on the modulation depth and its absolute phase, both the spontaneous emission and the frequency shift may be conveniently modified and controlled.

Enhanced vibrational quantum dynamics beyond the rotating wave approximation

Sergiu Carlig, Mihai Macovei

We investigate the vibrational dynamics of a quantum mechanical resonator when an ensemble of laser pumped two-level emitters are fixed on it. Beyond the rotating wave approximation with respect to phonon’s variables, one can obtain an interesting phonon quantum dynamics if the quantum emitter’s variables are faster than those describing the mechanical resonator. Particularly, for certain parameters, one can obtain an enhanced phonon emission as well as larger phonon–phonon correlations in the steady state.

Collective Light Emission Revisited: Reservoir Induced Coherence

Yumian Su, D. Bimberg, Andreas Knorr +1 more

We study the collective emission of a few emitters (up to three) in a cavity. In addition to the radiation coupling responsible for sub- and superradiance, we investigate emitters additionally coupled through a joint carrier reservoir. For such emitters, typically embedded in a solid state environment, the carrier reservoir provides a continuous pumping mechanism for the steady state emission. We show that the statistical properties of the emitted light depend strongly on the interaction between the emitters and the reservoir. Unexpectedly, the presence of the reservoir enhances the coherence of the emitted light already for a few emitters. This results from the fact that the carrier reservoir introduces new many-body correlations to the electronic transition and in this way suppresses multiphoton processes.

Phase-enhanced excitations in pumped collective nuclear systems

Mihai A. Macovei, Fabian Richter, Adriana Pálffy

The quantum dynamics of an externally driven ensemble of nuclear two-level systems embedded in a leaky broadband cavity is investigated theoretically. In the considered scenario both the nuclear ensemble and the cavity mode are coherently pumped by two externally applied x-ray electromagnetic fields. When the frequencies of the applied coherent fields are identical, cross-correlations among the existing decay channels increase the nuclear excitation probabilities depending on the phase difference of the applied fields. Our results show that the excited state of the nuclear ensemble may exhibit sub- to super-Poissonian nuclear statistics, demonstrating induced correlations during photon absorption or emission processes. The role of cross-correlations for the superradiant decay and the collective Lamb shift of the ensemble is also investigated.

ACOUSTICS2008/2904 The role of coherent phonons in the vibronic laser

W. Gadomski, Bożena Ratajska-Gadomska

Herewith we present the quantum theory of the vibronic laser, which is based on the crucial role played by the host crystal phonons in the laser dynamics. In the solid state transition-metal ion laser the operation takes place between the vibronically broadened electronic levels of the gain center, thus the laser action is accompanied by the creation or annihilation of the host lattice phonons. The nonequilibrium coherent phonons, produced in the process of the nonradiative energy transition from the photoexcited impurity ion, pump the energy level, from whivh the laser action takes place. One can say that the laser photons are produced at the cost of lattice phonons. This is the reason why the coherent phonons strongly influence the character of the laser action and govern the complicated laser dynamics. In the laser equations, derived by us, the number of coherent phonons is treated as one of dynamical variables coupled with the number of photons. In solution we observe the eect of energy pulling between photons and phonons. Phonons follow all forms of the photon dynamics including self-pulsations and chaotic dynamics.
