Abstract

A review of the journal entitled 'Classical And Quantum Correlation Functions For A Ring Model' has been carried out which discusses the solutions of classical and quantum correlation functions for the ring model. Classical and quantum correlation functions are derived for systems of non-interacting particles moving in a circle. demonstrated that the decay behavior of the classical expression for the correlation function can be recovered from a strictly periodic quantum mechanical expression by taking the limit ℏ→0, after the appropriate transformation. The aim of this study is to present clearly and in detail how the position correlation function for a system of particles moving in a circle having a certain average energy and written in a form which shows the nature of the transformation. Next, we examine the use of Poisson addition to represent F(z), and how the correlation function becomes identical to the form given by classical statistical mechanics, which exhibits Gaussian decay. The results of this study indicate that the positional correlation function for a system of particles moving in a circle, and having a certain average energy, can be written in a form which shows the nature of the transformation. Then using the Poisson addition formula to represent F(z), the expression is rewritten to enable the limit ℏ→0 to be taken. It was finally found that the correlation function became identical to the form given by classical statistical mechanics, which exhibits a Gaussian decay.

Classical and Quantum Correlation Functions for a Ring Model

Brian H Buck, C V Sukumar

Classical and quantum correlation functions are derived for a system of non-interacting particles moving on a circle. It is shown that the decaying behaviour of the classical expression for the correlation function can be recovered from the strictly periodic quantum mechanical expression by taking the limit that the Planck's constant goes to zero, after an appropriate transformation.

From classical to quantum statistical mechanics

Giampiero V. M. Esposito, Giuseppe Marmo, George Sudarshan

Classical statistical mechanics tries to derive the macroscopic properties of matter starting from the mechanical laws that rule the behaviour of single particles. To describe equilibrium states, only observables accounting for correlations among states are considered, and only systems consisting of a large number of particles are taken into account. The observables are described by continuous functions on phase space, and the states are represented by linear assignments of a number to each observable. Within the framework of the canonical ensemble, one deals with mechanical systems in thermal equilibrium with a thermal reservoir, and the equilibrium state is reached as a result of the interaction with the external world. The external world may be really external, or equally well, the unrecognized internal degrees of freedom, like in the calculation of viscosity or thermal conductivity. If really only the external world is the cause we may expect some surface dependence while an internal unrecognized degree of freedom would have a volume effect, unless the interactions are long range. The microcanonical ensemble is instead introduced to study isolated mechanical systems, and the equilibrium is viewed as a temporal average, rather than as a limit. Attention is then focused on partition functions, the theorem of equipartition of energy and an elementary theory of specific heats. In the second part, the Planck derivation of the law of black-body radiation is analysed, presenting in chronological order the Kirchhoff theorem, the Stefan law, the Wien displacement law, the Rayleigh–Jeans formula and the Planck hypothesis. Further topics discussed are the Einstein and Debye quantum models for specific heats of solids. These topics prepare the ground for the introduction of quantum statistical mechanics. The third part is, in fact, devoted to the analysis of identical particles in quantum mechanics.

Quantum Statistical Mechanics in Classical Phase Space. Test Results for Quantum Harmonic Oscillators

Phil Attard

The von Neumann trace form of quantum statistical mechanics is transformed to an integral over classical phase space. Formally exact expressions for the resultant position-momentum commutation function are given. A loop expansion for wave function symmetrization is also given. The method is tested for quantum harmonic oscillators. For both the boson and fermion cases, the grand potential and the average energy obtained by numerical quadrature over classical phase space are shown to agree with the known analytic results. A mean field approximation is given which is suitable for condensed matter, and which allows the quantum statistical mechanics of interacting particles to be obtained in classical phase space.

Decay of Order in Classical Many-Body Systems. I. Introduction and Formal Theory

William J. Camp, Michael Ellis Fisher

In this work we briefly review the Ornstein-Zernike prediction for the decay of correlation functions, extend it to treat the decay of correlation near surfaces, and then contrast this prediction with the exactly known results for the two-dimensional Ising model. We develop the transfer-matrix approach to classical statistical mechanics in sufficient generality for its use in later papers in this series, where it is employed to derive general forms for the decay of correlation functions in Ising models away from the critical point, which provide a clear explanation of the failure of the Ornstein-Zernike theory for the two-dimensional Ising model. In particular, we show that the thermodynamic behavior of a classical system with short-range interactions reduces, when the system becomes infinite in at least one dimension, to the calculation of the largest eigenvalue of the transfer matrix. Using the Perron-Fr\"obenius theorem, we show that for a system infinite in no more than one dimension, an arbitrary correlation function defined on the system decays at least exponentially fast. One is able to predict whether the decay of correlation is monotone or oscillatory on the basis of the largest few eigenvalues of the transfer matrix.

THE LONG TIME ASYMPTOTIC BEHAVIOUR OF THE CORRELATION FUNCTIONS——THE INFLUENCES OF THE WAVES ON THE RELAXATION PROCESSES

HUO YU-PING, 中国科学院等离子体研究所

Based on the general theory of the non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, we have discussed the influences of waves on the relaxation processes in macroscopic systems, especially. about the non-exponential asymptotic behaviour of the correlation functions.Because, how to select the representation is important for discussing the dissipative processes in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, it is desirable to start from the elementary excitation representation. Using the Basic idea of C* algebra theory, we have developed a method for operator expansion, and employed it to express the flow operators in second quantized elementary excitation representation. Taking the residual interaction between the elementary excitations as perturbation in the calculation of the resolvent of the Liouville operator, and using the method of projection operator, a general expression of the non-exponential decaying part of the correlation functions have been obtained.By analysing the procedure of treating the elementary excitation spectrum, we devided the residual interaction into two parts. For pure dissipative mode, taking into account the linear interaction, the main terms of the non-exponential decaying part(t(-d/2) term) were obtained. Detailed analysis shows that, the non-linear interaction (mode-mode coupling) is very small, and leads to a relatively faster decaying process (t(-d) or so), hence it can be neglected. This article emphasizes that, for the wave processes, the local fluctuation correlation, the particle self-correlation and the transport processes are different in nature. Their relative magnitudes (relative to the corresponding quasi-particle parts) may also be quite different. With these general results, we have analysed briefly the relaxation processes in liquid, and made some discussion about the so called mode-mode coupling theory.
