Research on physical layer security based on cooperative interference

Abstract

Because of the openness of the wireless relay channel, the confidential information transmitted in the channel is very easy to be eavesdropped on by malicious eavesdroppers and cause information leakage. In specifically, a friendly jammer will transmit a jamming signal to confound an eavesdropper attempting to listen in on a relay transmission. For wireless relay networks using the Rayleigh fading channel model, this research proposes a physical layer security technique based on cooperative interference. In the system, we design two-time stages to realize the transmission of the source to the user. During the initial phase, the signal source transmits a composite signal to both the user and the relay. In the second phase, the confidential information is relayed and artificial noise is generated by friendly jammers to confuse eavesdroppers. Through our proposed method, we derive precise analytical expressions for the intercept probability (IP) and outage probability (OP). The correctness of the theoretical derivation is verified by numerical results and theoretical simulation.

Two-phase cooperative jamming and beamforming for physical layer secrecy

Mohammad Hatami, Mojtaba Jahandideh, Hamid Behroozi

The broadcast nature of wireless communications makes the propagation medium vulnerable to security attacks such as eavesdropping and jamming from adversarial or unauthorized users. Applying physical layer secrecy approaches will enable the exchange of confidential messages over a wireless medium in the presence of unauthorized eavesdroppers, without using any secret keys. However, physical layer security approaches are typically feasible only when the source-eavesdropper channel is weaker than the source-destination channel. Cooperative jamming can be used to overcome this challenge and increase the secrecy rate. In this paper, the security of two-phase relaying system with multiple intermediate nodes and in the presence of an eavesdropper is investigated. To enhance the system secrecy rate, a joint cooperative beamforming and jamming combined with relay and jammer selections is proposed. In phase I, the source node broadcasts a signal to relays while three intermediate nodes (which act as jammers) help the source node by transmitting random jamming signals to confuse the eavesdropper. Since the friendly (cooperative) jammers create interference for both the intended relays and the eavesdropper, optimal beamforming is applied such that no interference is caused at two preselected desired relays (that are going to receive the confidential massage in phase I). In phase II, two preselected relays transmit the source message with beamforming coefficients such that the received signal at the eavesdropper is completely nulled out. Our goal in this paper is to minimize the received SNR at the eavesdropper while increasing it at the destination as much as possible by applying different methods such as cooperative beamforming, cooperative jamming and relay selection. To avoid operational complexity, we consider the minimum number of intermediate nodes that are necessary without losing the performance. Numerical results demonstrate the advantage of our proposed scheme compared with the scheme with no cooperative jamming.

An approach for secure wireless communication using friendly noise

Parag Aggarwal, Aditya Trivedi

As the need of highly secure data transmission in wireless communication has increased rapidly, physical layer security gains a lots of attention recently. The transmission of confidential data between two legitimate users in the existence of the passive eavesdropper with quasi-static Rayleigh channel is considered. A new technique is proposed in which a friendly noise is incorporated with confidential data bearing signal such that it preserves the integrity of the signal and does not degrade the legitimate link. This friendly noise acts as jamming signal for eavesdropper. The analytical expression for secrecy outage probability of the proposed technique for both single and multiple antennas eavesdropper is derived. The secrecy performance of proposed technique is compared with the traditional direct transmission and the cooperative jamming schemes. The asymptotic nature of the outage probability is also studied for the different parameters. Numerical results are also presented to verify the analytical expressions of proposed model, which show that the proposed technique is better than the traditional direct transmission and the cooperative jamming schemes.

Unlocking physical-layer security in cooperative wireless networks with multiple relays in α − μ fading environments

Ayam Saddouq, Mamoun F. Al‐Mistarihi, Mahmoud A. Khodeir +1 more

Abstract Cooperative communication has emerged as a pivotal innovation in wireless networks, allowing multiple sites with single antennas to collaborate in signal transmission, thereby improving power efficiency, enhancing spatial diversity, and increasing the reliability of signal reception. This paper introduces a cooperative communication system comprising two communicating nodes, multiple relays, and an eavesdropper. The eavesdropper attempts to intercept the signals transmitted between the two nodes. To mitigate this threat, a jamming signal is employed as artificial interference, degrading the quality of the wiretap channel and preventing the eavesdropper from successfully acquiring the transmitted data, thereby enhancing system security. The $$\alpha -\mu$$ α - μ fading distribution is utilized as a generalized model for wireless channel fading. The system model is analyzed, and closed-form expressions for secrecy outage probability are derived for single-relay and the asymptotic secrecy outage probability is derived for multiple-relay scenarios, and finally the probability of the correct computation of the secrecy packets is evaluated. Analytical results are provided to substantiate the theoretical outcomes.

Secrecy Analysis on Half-Duplex Two-Way Relay Transmission UsingVarious Transmission Channels and Jamming Strategies

Mohammed Ahmed Salem, Azlan Bin Abd.Aziz, Mohamad Yusoff Alias +2 more

The open nature of the wireless networks makes them vulnerable to the eavesdropper attacks. Cooperative relay transmission is a popular method to prevent the attacks of the illegal nodes. This research proposes a cooperative jamming protocol to enhance the physical layer in wireless cooperative networks, where the destination sends a jamming signal to the eavesdropper node to degrade its channel capacity. Simulations of the secrecy performance metrics in terms of the secrecy capacity and secrecy outage probability are presented and discussed to measure the security level of the proposed jamming protocol. In this paper, different channels namely Rician fading, Rayleigh fading, and Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels are investigated in the half-duplex two-way relaying system to obtain the maximum secrecy performance. Based on the results, the highest secrecy capacity is achieved by using the Rician fading channel for transmission from the source to the destination and using the Rayleigh channel as the jamming link to degrade the eavesdropper capacity.

Jamming and Physical Layer Security for Cooperative Wireless Communication

Vandana Milind Rohokale, Neeli Rashmi Prasad, Ramjee Prasad

Security functionality handled by higher layers of OSI model is a costly affair due to key management and complex mathematical encryption-decryption mechanisms in the scalable networks like wireless sensor networks (WSNs). WSN consists of resource constrained tiny sensor nodes for which battery is their lifetime. Physical layer security is the cost effective solution for such adhoc networks. The cooperative diversity mechanism makes use of the benefits of wireless sensor network scalability in terms of cooperative resource sharing in which multiple diversity channels are created which results into improved wireless connectivity. Cooperative jamming principle is used where the source transmits the encoded signal and at the same time relay transmits the weighted jamming signal to increase the equivocation of the eavesdropper. This work proposes a novel cooperative jamming mechanism for scalable networks like Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) which makes use of friendly interference to confuse the eavesdropper and increase its uncertainty about the source message. Channel fading is exploited to achieve perfect secrecy. The full communication link is built with the help of Information theoretic source and channel coding mechanisms. The whole idea is to make use of normally inactive relay nodes in the selective Decode and Forward cooperative communication and make them work as cooperative jamming sources to increase the equivocation of the eavesdropper. In this work, eavesdropper’s channel’s equivocation is compared with the main channel in terms of mutual information and secrecy capacity.
