Abstract

We demonstrate a quantum-limited silicon photonic coherent receiver with 26.0 dB shot noise clearance, 34.6 µW knee power, and 0.00200 mm 2 chip area. We measure squeezed vacuum with the integrated receiver and demonstrate phase-locking to the squeezed quadrature.

We demonstrate an integrated quantum-limited coherent receiver with co-packaged silicon photonics and electronics. The fully integrated receiver has 2.57 GHz bandwidth, 14.5 dB shot noise clearance, 587 µW knee power, and 2.7 × 0.8 mm2 footprint. With this system, we measure squeezed vacuum showing 0.156 ± 0.039 dB sub-shot-noise-level sensitivity.

Quantum coherent transceivers toward Holevo-limited communications

Volkan Gurses, Suraj Samaga, Elianna Kondylis +1 more

The Holevo limit bounds the channel capacity of a communication channel in which information is encoded in quantum states in a Hilbert space at the transmitter and decoded using quantum measurements at the receiver. Saturating the Holevo limit requires quantum-limited transceivers that either generate quantum states of light or employ quantum-limited measurements. Here, we demonstrate an integrated photonic-electronic quantum-limited coherent receiver (QRX) achieving 14.0 dB shot noise clearance (SNC), 520 $μ$W knee power, 2.57 GHz 3-dB bandwidth, 3.50 GHz shot-noise-limited bandwidth, and 90.2 dB common-mode rejection ratio ($\mathrm{CMRR}$). We scale this design to a 32-channel QRX array with median 26.6 dB $\mathrm{SNC}$, and automatic $\mathrm{CMRR}$ correction yielding a median 76.8 dB $\mathrm{CMRR}$ at minimum. Using the integrated QRX and fiber-optic transmitter, we measure $0.15\pm0.01$ dB of squeezing below the shot noise limit, limited by off-chip losses. We propose a squeezed light communication scheme that can surpass the Shannon limit, with a path toward the Holevo limit.

On-chip squeezed light in the audio frequency band

Xuezhi Zhu, Yunyun Cao, Rui Liu +7 more

Squeezed light in the audio-frequency band is a key resource for quantum metrology and quantum sensing. However, realizing stable audio-frequency squeezed light on integrated photonic platforms remains challenging due to technical noise and the difficulty of scalable phase referencing. Here, we demonstrate on-chip generation of audio-band two-mode squeezed states down to 60 Hz in a silica microcavity. To enable phase-stable operation without directly locking fragile quantum modes, we develop a coherent-comb control method in which a weak electro-optic reference comb co-propagates with the vacuum at the quantum frequency modes in an orthogonal polarization. This scheme provides quadrature measurement and long-timescale phase stability, thereby enabling covariance-matrix reconstruction. We verify the entanglement with the positive partial transposition criterion, which confirms inseparability via a minimum symplectic eigenvalue of 0.395 ($<0.5$). Our results establish an experimentally accessible route toward on-chip phase-stable audio-band squeezing and support the scalable framework for continuous-variable quantum information processing with integrated photonics.

Quantum Interferometer Combining Squeezing and Parametric Amplification

Xiaojie Zuo, Zhihui Yan, Yanni Feng +4 more

High precision interferometers are the building blocks of precision metrology and the ultimate interferometric sensitivity is limited by the quantum noise. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a compact quantum interferometer involving two optical parametric amplifiers and the squeezed states generated within the interferometer are directly used for the phase-sensing quantum state. By both squeezing shot noise and amplifying phase-sensing intensity the sensitivity improvement of 4.86±0.24 dB beyond the standard quantum limit is deterministically realized and a minimum detectable phase smaller than that of all present interferometers under the same phase-sensing intensity is achieved. This interferometric system has significantly potential applications in a variety of measurements for tiny variances of physical quantities.
