Transition from optical bistability to multistability in a tunneling quantum dot via structure hybrid light

Abstract

In this paper, we proposed a new model based on the electron tunneling effect in a four-level quantum dot molecule (QDM) for studying the optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM). The QDM interacts with a probe and two coupling and Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) fields. We found that by adjusting the electron tunneling effect and the parametric controlling of LG light, the transition from OB to OM or vice versa is possible. Moreover, due to the simultaneous interaction between coupling and LG lights with the same optical transition adjusting the threshold of OB and OM by orbital angular momentum (OAM) of the LG light becomes achievable. Our results show that by adjusting the simultaneous effect of electron tunneling and OAM state of the vortex light, the favorable OB and OM patterns with adjustable intensity thresholds are achievable. Our proposed model may have potential application in quantum information science based on quantum dot (QD) devices.

Realization of phase dependent optical bistability in a quantum dot molecule via three-wave mixing

Abstract In this paper, we have proposed a new model based on the electron tunneling effect for controlling the optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) in a defect slab structure with a quantum dot molecule (QDM). Due to the presence of the electron tunneling effect, an additional weak signal beam can be generated in the system which makes the medium becomes phase dependent. We have studied the refractive index properties of the QDM via optical susceptibility of the propagated probe light. We have discussed the relative phase effect on negative refractive index (NRI) of the QDM nanostructure due to presence of electron tunneling. Then, by using the transfer matrix method, we have studied the transmission coefficient for NRI of the QDM nanostructure. Then, we have investigated the properties of transmitted light versus incident light for realizing the OB and OM. We have considered the relative phase effect on OB and OM properties of the transmitted beam and find that the switching between them is possible when electron tunneling is present in the quantum dot. Moreover, the optical thickness of the defect layer is also investigated on OB and OM in resonance and non-resonance conditions.

All-optical control of optical bistability in a hybrid system

Aravindhan Surendar, Farag M. A. Altalbawy, I B Sapaev +4 more

Abstract In this paper, we study the tunneling induced optical bistability (OB) in a quantum dot (QD)-metallic nanoparticle (MNP) hybrid system via surface plasmon effects. We realized that in the presence of the tunneling effect, OB arises when the probe light is parallel to the major axis of the hybrid system. We realized the threshold of OB can be controlled by controlling the distance parameter between the QD and MNP. For appropriate distance between the QD and MNP, we find that optical multistability (OM) appears in the system. We find that the threshold of OM can be adjusted when we consider the radius effect of the MNP, respectively.

A quintuple quantum dot system for electrical and optical control of multi/bistability in a telecommunication window

Mohammad Reza Mehmannavaz, Hamed Sattari

We propose a model for a quintuple coupled quantum dot system based on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. Then, we analyze the optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) behaviours and transition between the regimes at a wavelength of We take the benefit of consecutive and parallel interdot tunnelling and an incoherent pumping field for electrical and even optical control of the processes. It is shown that OB, OM and transition between them can be accomplished and controlled by adjusting the rate of the inter-dot tunnellings (electrical bias), probe wavelength detuning and rate of the optical incoherent pumping field. By proper choice of the controlling parameters, the bistable hysteresis loop becomes narrower, which makes it easier for the cavity field to reach saturation. We interpret the OB and OM behaviours by discussing the absorption of the active medium. We also investigate switching time between the two stable states when the output field jumps from a lower branch to an upper branch. Such a controllable OB/OM and transition between them in multiple QD molecules at a wavelength of 1.550 μ m, may provide some new possibilities for technological applications in optoelectronics, solid-state quantum information science and systems dealing with signal processing.

Two-dimensional asymmetric diffraction grating in quantum dot molecules system controlled by vortex light

Jiaqian Li, Duo Zhang, Junbing Guo +1 more

Abstract We propose a theoretical scheme for realizing a two-dimensional (2D) asymmetric diffraction grating in a four-level quantum dot molecules (QDMs) system with double tunneling effects. The QDMs system interacts with a weak probe field, a 2D SW control field and a composite Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) vortex field. By adjusting system parameters such as the orbital angular momentum (OAM) number, the beam waist parameter of the vortex light, the tunneling strength, and the detuning of the standing-wave (SW) field, the energy distribution and the diffraction intensity of the probe field can be controlled effectively. In addition, the detuning of the probe field can be used to achieve the symmetrical switching control of the 2D diffraction grating between the second and the fourth quadrants. This investigation may have potential application in beam splitting technology and optical device design.

Investigation of optical bistability in a double In_xGa_1−xN/GaN quantum-dot nanostructure via inter-dot tunneling effect

A. Soltani, Rajab Nasehi, Seyyed Hossein Asadpour +2 more

In this paper, our aim is to control optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) in a five-level system designed in a double quantum dot (QD) nanostructure. In a realistic example, this atomic system is created in two semiconductor QDs (In(x)Ga(1-x)N/GaN), owning transfer of carriers via tunneling effect. OB behavior is controlled not only by the inter-dot tunneling effect but also by variation of probe detuning and intensity of the control field. It is demonstrated that voltage-controlled detuning can significantly affect the behavior of OB and OM; therefore, the OM converts to OB by probe detuning and intensity of the control field.

Optical bistability and multistability in hybrid system

Jing Zhang, Xiao Meng Wu, Bo Dang

Abstract In this letter, a comprehensive investigation has been conducted on the optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) phenomena manifested by transmitted light in a ring cavity consisting of a hybrid system of metal nanoparticle (MNP) and semiconductor quantum dot (SQD). Our study has been primarily devoted to examining the influence of the distance between SQD and MNP, as well as the susceptibilities of the SQD, the MNP, and the hybrid nanostructure as a whole, on the OB and OM traits of the transmitted light. Our discoveries demonstrate that a transition from OB to OM, or vice versa, can be accomplished for a definite distance between MNP and QD. It is our contention that our proposed model may have potential applications in the domain of quantum information processes based on SQD-MNP hybrid systems.
