Abstract

It has been demonstrated that thin CdS crystal platelets at room temperature may exhibit all-optical bistability under illumination with the 514nm line of an Ar+-laser1. In this case the local heating of the sample leads to induced absorption optical bistability. In the present paper we evaporate metallic contacts on CdS crystals and apply an external bias voltage. The carriers created by the incoming light lead to a photo-current which in turn increases the temperature of the sample by electrical power via Joule's heat and thereby changes the optical properties 2,3.

Optical Bistability in CDS

Optical bistability (OB) has potential applications in optoelectronics [1]. Beside electronic OB, which is usually fast, also photo-thermal OB often has been investigated [1]. Its main disadvantage are switching times in the μs-ms regime. In particular thin (a few μm) CdS single crystal platelets show photothermal OB due to induced absorption at room temperature at 514nm.

Optical Bistability In Evaporated Thin Films Of CDs

We report on optical bistability in thin films of evaporated CdS at 514 nm. The main mechanism is traced back to thermally induced increasing absorption. Besides all optical devices, externally controlled SEED structures are realized 'by integrated electrical con-tacts. Experimental results on the steady-state and the dynamic behavior of both types of elements are presented.

Internal Feedback Mechanisms of Optoelectronic Bistability in Cadmium Sulfide

Sergey Viktorovich Bogdanov, Vadim G. Lyssenko

Optical bistability caused by thermal heating is observed when the CdS crystal is excited near the I2 bound exciton absorption line [1]. Impact ionization of free and bound excitons occurs in the crystal upon its illumination in electric field. The probability of impact ionization depends in a threshold way on exciton and free carrier concentration. At a certain field dependent carrier concentratiοn avalanche occurs, the electric current therewith increases the crystal temperature by 5-20 K [2] which is followed by a red I2 shift. The shift leads to an increase in absorption, carrier density and current. Therefore, feedback results from impact ionization current heating the crystal (Fig. 1).

Thermally induced optical bistability (OB) in II-VI single crystals has already been studied in various publications. Thermal evaporated films have the advantage of easy production compared with single crystal growth. In this paper we report our most recent results about room temperature OB of evaporated layers. Optical modulation characteristics and (bistable) switching times were also measured at reduced temperatures.

SWITCHING DYNAMICS OF BISTABLE CdS ABSORPTIVE PLATELETS

The switching dynamics of thermally induced optical bistability due to increasing absorption is investigated in thin CdS platelets, at room temperature. Fast and slow components can be observed during the switching process, they depend on the holding point intensity and on the switching pulse energy. It is shown that the transverse relaxation of the temperature in the sample influences this dynamics. The spectral shift of the band to band absorption edge, at the origin of the bistable behavior, is observed in a three beam experiment.

Optical Oscillations and Their Peculiarities Caused by Internal Switching Delay in Optically Bistable CdS Crystals

V. Kažukauskas, H. Ißler, J. Grohs +1 more

Abstract Light oscillations due to internal switching delay in optically bistable CdS platelets are reported using a geometry with two exciting beams. It is shown that in the case when one of the exciting beams has the form of a long thin light strip, an internal delay occurs due to the final propagation speed of the bistable switching front along it (switching wave) which enables one to obtain oscillations using electrooptical feedback without external delay. If an external delay is applied to one of the beams, while the second one appears as a single light pulse peculiarities of the oscillations caused by the interaction of both delay signals are obtained, which are not observed if only one light beam is used.
