Abstract

Thermally induced optical bistability (OB) in II-VI single crystals has already been studied in various publications. Thermal evaporated films have the advantage of easy production compared with single crystal growth. In this paper we report our most recent results about room temperature OB of evaporated layers. Optical modulation characteristics and (bistable) switching times were also measured at reduced temperatures.

Optical Bistability in CDS

Optical bistability (OB) has potential applications in optoelectronics [1]. Beside electronic OB, which is usually fast, also photo-thermal OB often has been investigated [1]. Its main disadvantage are switching times in the μs-ms regime. In particular thin (a few μm) CdS single crystal platelets show photothermal OB due to induced absorption at room temperature at 514nm.

Optical properties, bistability, and nonlinearity of evaporated ternary II-VI semiconductor thin films

Hans Joachim Eichler, Andreas Haase, A. Kummrow +6 more

Ternary II-VI semiconductors, like CdSxSe1-x or ZnxCd1-xS, were prepared by thermal evaporation of binary semiconductors from a double source. The influence of substrate temperature during thin film deposition and of thermal annealing in argon atmosphere on absorption edge steepness is studied. A high absorption edge steepness is advantageous to achieve large resonant optical nonlinearities, like absorption bistability and electronic nonlinearities. The position of the absorption edge can be tuned by choosing a proper film composition. Thermally induced optical bistability is demonstrated. Electronic nonlinearities are investigated in ns- and ps-pump-probe experiments. Fast bleaching with < 60 ps relaxation time is observed at the absorption edge. The maximum bleaching coefficient for CdS0.69Se0.31 films is 1.4 cm/kW at (lambda) equals 587 nm for pumping with (lambda) equals 377 nm. Annealing the films showed no effect on the relaxation time, but the bleaching coefficient was increased by a factor of five.

Optical Bistability In Evaporated Thin Films Of CDs

Yasushi Iyechika, Georg Wingen, D. Jäger +2 more

We report on optical bistability in thin films of evaporated CdS at 514 nm. The main mechanism is traced back to thermally induced increasing absorption. Besides all optical devices, externally controlled SEED structures are realized 'by integrated electrical con-tacts. Experimental results on the steady-state and the dynamic behavior of both types of elements are presented.

Nonlinear Optical Properties And Optical Bistability In CdS And ZnSe Crystals

J. Grohs, A. Schmidt, M. Kunz +7 more

In this paper we present our investigations concerning thermally induced optical bistability (OB) in CdS and ZnSe. With CdS platelet type single crystals basic boolean functions are realized. The possibilities of cascadability and parallelity of the information processing and the switching dynamics of the system are examined. Further on the effect of optical noise upon the switching process and the instable branch of the hysteresis loop are measured. In ZnSe both absorptive and dispersive OB are observed. An efficient opto-electric modulator is built using the photothermal SEED-effect.

CdS self-electrooptic effect device: electrooptic modulation and optical bistability at 514nm

A. Witt, M. Wegener, Claus F. Klingshirn +3 more

It has been demonstrated that thin CdS crystal platelets at room temperature may exhibit all-optical bistability under illumination with the 514nm line of an Ar+-laser1. In this case the local heating of the sample leads to induced absorption optical bistability. In the present paper we evaporate metallic contacts on CdS crystals and apply an external bias voltage. The carriers created by the incoming light lead to a photo-current which in turn increases the temperature of the sample by electrical power via Joule's heat and thereby changes the optical properties 2,3.

All-optical bistability in luminescence of thin CdS films

B. Ullrich, Takayoshi Kobayashi

Recently, we have discovered that the excitation of thin CdS films with the 514.5 nm line causes an all-optical bistable luminescent emission in the near infrared part of the spectrum. A first insight in mechanism and origin of all-optical bistability in luminescence of semiconductors is presented. We show that the initial and final states of the bistable luminescence are determined by the thermal properties of the luminescence intensity of the thin CdS film. However, during the bistable switch of the luminescence thermal effects and electronic ones take place. Thus, all-optical bistability in luminescence is a thermally induced electronic bistability.
