Role of the temporal, spectral shape, detuning, dispersion, and diffraction on the self-induced-transparency phenomenon and in the concomitant different-wavelength coherent pulse copropagation in a three-level system

Abstract

The transition probabilities are calculated for 2-and 3-level atoms in an optically thick medium. The analysis is carried out in the frequency instead of the temporal domain. The response depends on whether the pulse shape is conserved when transformed into the momentum space. The propagation effects have been treated by McCall et al.1 and by Konopnicki et al. 2 in the plane-wave regime and were extended to include diffraction.3

We have examined the influence of the formation of self‐phase and cross‐phase modulation on the simultaneous propagation of two different‐wavelength beams in a three‐level system. The temporal and spectral variations of the field are shown as a function of the optical thickness.

Self-induced transparency in self-chirped media

Carlos R. Stroud, C. M. Bowden, L. Allen

Resonant absorbing media having many atoms within a cubic resonance wavelength can exhibit large frequency chirps in pulse propagation due to dipole-dipole interactions among the atoms. Analytic solutions are obtained for invariant pulse propagation in such a medium consisting of interacting two-level atoms. Departures from the McCall-Hahn results include nonhyperbolic secant pulse shapes and different than 2π-area pulses. In addition, the excitation of the medium is comparatively suppressed for the same group velocity. The results are interpreted to suggest new experiments.

Coherent effects in ultrashort pulse propagation through an optically thick three-level medium

V. V. Kozlov, Evald E. Fradkin

A theoretical study is made of the propagation of a weak ultrashort pulse through an optically thick, inhomogeneously broadened three-level medium of the V configuration driven by a self-induced transparency pulse on the coupled transition. The weak coherent pulse experiences a greatly enhanced transparency. The new transparency effect is discussed in detail and the results are found to be in good agreement with recent experimental observations.

Transient processes in propagation of an ultrashort pulse in a three-level medium

Махвиладзе Тариэль Михайлович, I. G. Sinitsyn, Leonid A. Shelepin

An analysis is made of the effects associated with the propagation of an ultrashort pulse in a three-level resonance medium. It is shown that the dynamics of the changes in the pulse during its propagation differs considerably from the usual self-induced transparency effect in a two-level medium. It is predicted theoretically that there should be a propagation regime accompanied by periodic variation of the pulse shape.

Investigation of double-resonance self-induced transparency in a three-level system by numerical techniques

Dmitrii I. Gruev

The propagation of two ultrashort radiation pulses interacting via an intermediate level is analyzed by numerical integration of a system of equations describing coherent interaction between radiation and a three-level medium. It is shown that the propagation of the pulses depends strongly on their areas on entry to the medium and on the relationship between the dipole moments of transitions between neighboring levels. Substantial temporal narrowing was established for fairly high-power pulses (4π and 6π pulses) and this may be utilized to control their durations. Investigations are also made of the influence of relaxation processes, delay of pulses relative to one another on entry to the medium, and nonresonant dispersion during pulse propagation under the specified conditions.
