Abstract

We have examined the influence of the formation of self‐phase and cross‐phase modulation on the simultaneous propagation of two different‐wavelength beams in a three‐level system. The temporal and spectral variations of the field are shown as a function of the optical thickness.

The transition probabilities are calculated for 2-and 3-level atoms in an optically thick medium. The analysis is carried out in the frequency instead of the temporal domain. The response depends on whether the pulse shape is conserved when transformed into the momentum space. The propagation effects have been treated by McCall et al.1 and by Konopnicki et al. 2 in the plane-wave regime and were extended to include diffraction.3

Physical mechanisms in coherent on-resonance propagation of two different-wavelength beams in a three-level system

Farrès P. Mattar

The coherent energy transfer from a strong pump beam at a given frequency to an initially weak probe beam injected at another frequency is reported. This exchange is achieved optimally by matching velocities to maintain maximum pulse overlap throughout the motion. The central role of pump depletion, transverse effects and time‐dependent phase variations in the co‐propagation in a medium is revealed.

Quantum initiation effects on the asymptotic coherent on-resonance propagation of two different-wavelength probe and pump beams in a three-level system

Farrès P. Mattar, Yves Claude, M. Burgess

The coherent energy transfer from a strong pump beam at a given frequency to a weak probe beam initiated by quantum noise at another frequency is reported. Effects of self‐ and cross‐phase modulation were also examined. An optimal energy exchange is maintained in the presence of fluctuations by matching the oscillators strengths to insure maximum pulse overlap throughout the motion. The central role of pump depletion, transverse effects, quantum initiation and time‐ and radial‐dependent phase variations in an asymptotic co‐propagation in a three‐level medium is revealed. An ensemble of statistical calculations is carried out. For most trajectories a stabilization of the pulse area is inhibited. Probe pulse sharpening and pump laser pulse peak retardation along with amplitude dimension, have been observed.

Double self-induced-transparency (SIT) in three-level absorbers

The goal of this communication is to show that different transmission characteristics are obtained for each pulse shape when diffraction is accounted for even if the time‐integrated areas are equal. For weakly overlapped two‐field propagation it was argued that each pulse evolution obeys its own area theorem. In our case the pulses are strongly overlapped and they mutually influence each other. We have worked out the transverse variation beyond the physical situation where a specific self‐similar Gaussian mode can be assumed. Detailed temporal and frequency reshaping of coherent pulses with finite beam extent in a three‐level absorber is reported.

Invariant pulse propagation and self-phase modulation in dense media

C. M. Bowden, R. Inguva, Aharon Postan

Analytical solutions for the slowly varying phase as well as the field amplitude are obtained for invariant pulse propagation in resonant absorbing media consisting of interacting two-level atoms. Such media, having many atoms within a cubic wavelength, have been shown to exhibit large frequency chirps in pulse propagation owing to near-dipole–dipole interactions. Departures from hyperbolic-secant pulse envelopes and pulse areas other than 2π have been shown to occur in invariant pulse propagation. We show that self-phase modulation results from the near-dipole–dipole interactions and can cause strong modification of pulse shapes, including temporal narrowing and multipulse behavior.
