Physical mechanisms in coherent on-resonance propagation of two different-wavelength beams in a three-level system

Farrès P. Mattar

The coherent energy transfer from a strong pump beam at a given frequency to an initially weak probe beam injected at another frequency is reported. This exchange is achieved optimally by matching velocities to maintain maximum pulse overlap throughout the motion. The central role of pump depletion, transverse effects and time‐dependent phase variations in the co‐propagation in a medium is revealed.

Double self-induced-transparency (SIT) in three-level absorbers

F. P. Mattar, J. A. Delettrez, Jiří Teichmann +1 more

The goal of this communication is to show that different transmission characteristics are obtained for each pulse shape when diffraction is accounted for even if the time‐integrated areas are equal. For weakly overlapped two‐field propagation it was argued that each pulse evolution obeys its own area theorem. In our case the pulses are strongly overlapped and they mutually influence each other. We have worked out the transverse variation beyond the physical situation where a specific self‐similar Gaussian mode can be assumed. Detailed temporal and frequency reshaping of coherent pulses with finite beam extent in a three‐level absorber is reported.

The transition probabilities are calculated for 2-and 3-level atoms in an optically thick medium. The analysis is carried out in the frequency instead of the temporal domain. The response depends on whether the pulse shape is conserved when transformed into the momentum space. The propagation effects have been treated by McCall et al.1 and by Konopnicki et al. 2 in the plane-wave regime and were extended to include diffraction.3

Coherent absorption in a homogeneously broadened medium

Lee E. Estes, D. Eteson, Lorenzo M. Narducci

An investigation of the propagation properties of a short pulse in a resonant absorber with a homogeneously broadened transition is presented with two main questions in mind: 1) the influence of the input pulse area on the transitory regime and on the steady-state propagation; 2) the effects of atomic coherence on the pulse shaping and the time delay of the leading edge of the pulse. The transitory regime of a propagating pulse is investigated and the stability of some asymptotic wave form confirmed. As expected, the transversal relaxation mechanism affects critically the major features of the coherent interaction. A detailed analysis of this problem is also presented.

Transverse Effects Self-Action Instabilities in the Simultaneous Propagation of Short Different-Wavelength Pulses in Three-Level Absorbers†

F.P. Mattarff, George R. Harrison, J. P. Babuel-Peyrissac +2 more

This paper is devoted to understanding the temporal synchronization of the two-color superfluorescence output powers. Following McCall and Feld et al., the monochromatic superfluorescence can be described in terms of a semi-classical propagational model that shares the same equations as Self-Induced Transparency (SIT). Thus it became important to understand double SIT that was discovered by McCall and Hahn (MH) to correctly interpret co-propagating beams with coherent exchange of energy and nonlinear phase evolution. A further motivation would be to elucidate pump and Stokes synchronization as well as pump depletion effect on Stokes buildup in Raman forward amplifier. In this work, we describe how the diffraction affects the longitudinal and transverse reshaping associated affects the simultaneous resonant propagation of two different-wavelength optical pulses in a three-level medium. The pulse lengths are shorter than any of the relaxation times, thus, the interaction is coherent. The material response has an inertial characteristic, which precludes its description with two instantaneous susceptibilities, and requires instead the density matrix formulism. A semi-classical formulism, as introduced by Konopnicki and Eberly (KE), is adopted in which two paraxial Maxwell field equations are closely intertwined in the generalized three-level Bloch equations.
