Investigation of double-resonance self-induced transparency in a three-level system by numerical techniques

Abstract

The propagation of two ultrashort radiation pulses interacting via an intermediate level is analyzed by numerical integration of a system of equations describing coherent interaction between radiation and a three-level medium. It is shown that the propagation of the pulses depends strongly on their areas on entry to the medium and on the relationship between the dipole moments of transitions between neighboring levels. Substantial temporal narrowing was established for fairly high-power pulses (4π and 6π pulses) and this may be utilized to control their durations. Investigations are also made of the influence of relaxation processes, delay of pulses relative to one another on entry to the medium, and nonresonant dispersion during pulse propagation under the specified conditions.

Effect of relaxation processes on the coherent interaction between radiation and a two-level medium

Dmitrii I. Gruev

Numerical integration of a system of equations describing the coherent interaction between radiation and a two-level medium (e.g., a semiconductor) is employed to analyze the effect of relaxation processes on the energy characteristics and dynamics of radiation pulses of duration τpΣ T '2 (T '2 is the irreversible polarization relaxation time). It is shown that the interaction of these pulses with the medium is strongly dependent on their area on entry to the medium and the attenuation of the pulses as a result of relaxation processes decreases with increasing pulse input power. This may be utilized for probing the medium in the resonant absorption range for short polarization relaxation times, in solution 42.65.Gv.

Coherent pulse propagation and self-induced transparency on degenerate transitions in atomic iodine

Gan Xu, Terence A. King

Coherent propagation of intense short laser pulses through degenerate absorbing media is investigated with the use of an atomic-iodine laser-absorber self-resonant combination. Four degenerate systems, the $^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}\ensuremath{-}^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$, $F=3\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}{F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=4$, $\ensuremath{\Delta}{M}_{F}=0,\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ and $F=2\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}{F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=2$, $\ensuremath{\Delta}{M}_{F}=0,\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ transitions, are studied under various conditions. Theoretical analysis based on the "pulse-area---pulse-energy" approach shows different pulse propagation behaviors for three typical types of degeneracy. Experimental results give good agreement with theoretical predictions. It is concluded that self-induced transparency exists in any degenerate two-level system, provided that suitable polarization of radiation is used. The usefulness of self-induced-transparency phenomena for measurements of transitional dipole moment and homogeneous relaxation time is also demonstrated.

Self-induced-transparency soliton propagation under the influence of a far-from-resonance transition line

Victor V. Kozlov, Evald E. Fradkin

The results of theoretical research of the propagation effect of an ultrashort optical pulse under the conditions of coherent interaction with two resonant transitions are presented. One of the transitions is tuned to exact resonance with the pulse carrier frequency; the other is distanced by much more than the pulse spectral width, thus the adiabatic following approximation may be applied to it. The interaction between the pulse and the far-from-resonance transition is described by the wave equation with the nonlinear index of refraction in the form of the Lorentz function of the field amplitude. This wave equation is solved together with the Bloch equations for the exact resonant transition. The solution in the form of the stationary phase-modulated pulse is obtained, and (pi) -pulse of self-induced transparency is the special case of this solution. The obtained solution has the area under the pulse envelope less than (pi) , and with increasing the absorption coefficient of the far-from-resonance transition the pulse area decreases. The effect can be used for reducing the transparency threshold of the resonant medium below (pi) .

Transient processes in propagation of an ultrashort pulse in a three-level medium

Махвиладзе Тариэль Михайлович, I. G. Sinitsyn, Leonid A. Shelepin

An analysis is made of the effects associated with the propagation of an ultrashort pulse in a three-level resonance medium. It is shown that the dynamics of the changes in the pulse during its propagation differs considerably from the usual self-induced transparency effect in a two-level medium. It is predicted theoretically that there should be a propagation regime accompanied by periodic variation of the pulse shape.

Propagation of a self-induced transparency pulse in a spatially dispersive medium

Yu. G. Gladush, A. M. Kamchatnov

Propagation of a self-induced transparency pulse in spatially dispersive media is analyzed. A generalized model of two-level systems allowing for excitonic energy transfer is proposed. Periodic and soliton solutions to the governing equations are found. Estimates show that the spatial dispersion of a pulse propagating in a slow-light medium can be substantially enhanced and become important in the case of resonant transition and sufficiently long pulse duration.

Coherent and phase-sensitive phenomena of ultrashort laser pulses propagating in three-level Λ -type systems studied with the finite-difference time-domain method

Yurii V. Loiko, Carles Serrat

Propagation of single- and two-color hyperbolic secant femtosecond laser pulses in a three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type quantum system is investigated by solving the Maxwell and density matrix equations with the finite-difference time-domain and Runge-Kutta methods. As a first study of our modeling, we simulate pulse self-induced transparency (SIT) in two-level systems and see how this phenomenon can be controlled by manipulating the initial relative phase between the SIT pulse and a second control pulse, provided the ratio between both pulse frequencies obeys the relation ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{1}∕{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{2}=3$. We then examine frequency down-conversion processes that are observed with single- and two-color pulses the envelope area of which is equal to or a multiple of $2\ensuremath{\pi}$, for pulse frequencies close to resonance with the transitions of a three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ medium. Also, phase-sensitive phenomena are discussed in the case of two-color $\ensuremath{\omega}\text{\ensuremath{-}}3\ensuremath{\omega}$ pulses propagating resonantly in the three-level system. In particular, possibilities for such coherent control are found for frequency down-conversion processes when the ratio of the frequencies of optical transitions is ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{13}∕{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{12}=3$. The conditions for quantum control of four-wave mixing processes are also examined when the pulse frequencies of two-color $\ensuremath{\omega}\text{\ensuremath{-}}3\ensuremath{\omega}$ pulses are far from any resonance of the three-level system. We demonstrate the possibility to cancel the phase sensitivity of the four-wave coupling in a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type system by competition effects between optical transitions.
