Experimental realization of a resistive single flux quantum logic circuit

V. P. Koshelets, K. K. Likharev, V. V. Migulin +5 more

An integrated circuit including all basic components of the recently suggested Resistive Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) logic family has been designed, fabricated and tested successfully. The circuit includes a generator of periodic SFQ pulses, four buffer/amplifier stages for splitting, channeling and regeneration of the pulses, a detector/load stage, and universal RSFQ logic gate (here performing the NOT function). The 10μm design rule circuit employs 13 active Nb - Al2O3- Nb Josephson junctions with the critical current density ∼ 0.5 kA/cm2. externally shunted by Mo resistors with R 1 Ohm. The shunting provided critical damping of the junctions (\beta_{c}\lsim 1) and reasonable (\sim 500 \muV) IcR product. The circuit operation has been tested by measurement of dc voltages\bar{V}_{i}across various Josephson junctions as functions of the dc current through the pulse generator. Correct and stable operation of the circuit for the clock frequencies from 0 to ∼30 GHz has been demonstrated.

Experimental Investigation of Energy-Efficient Digital Circuits Based on eSFQ Logic

Mark H. Volkmann, Anubhav Sahu, Coenrad Johann Fourie +1 more

We present the design and results of experimental verification methods for ultra-low-power digital circuits based on the recently introduced energy-efficient single flux quantum (eSFQ) logic. Similar to another low-power SFQ logic, ERSFQ, eSFQ circuits make use of superconducting dc bias current dividers and thus avoid static power dissipation. As a result, per-gate power dissipation is reduced by two orders of magnitude as compared to conventional rapid single flux quantum and static power dissipation is zero. The eSFQ circuits are fabricated using the HYPRES standard 4.5 kA/cm2process. We integrate a low-pass analog-to-digital modulator with our eSFQ deserializer to enable testing at high speed. In this paper, we demonstrate the viability and performance metrics of eSFQ circuits through functional and high-speed tests. Specifically, we confirmed correct operation and present measured parameter margins.

Experimental demonstration of single flux quantum logic with resettable latch

Futoshi Furuta, A. Akahori, N. Mori +6 more

We report experimental demonstrations of logic functions based on single flux quantum logic with resettable latch (SFQ-RL) logic. SFQ-RL has been proposed as new SFQ logic, which enables us to initialize the whole circuit. This initialization function is essential for the state machine into which conventional SFQ logic is classified, and makes SFQ logic more applicable to a large-scale logic system, such as a processor. In addition, the function can prevent circuits from performing the failed operation caused by a trapped flux in storage loops. The logic consists of three primitives, which can compose any logic function. We have experimentally demonstrated the operation of "half adder" based on SFQ-RL with the bias margin of /spl plusmn/16%. In order to examine the function of initialization, we designed and evaluated a pseudo random sequence generator by numerical simulation. In addition, we experimentally confirmed the initialization of the generator and "circular buffer" with the bias margin of /spl plusmn/20%.
