Summary form only given. In principal, one could use microwave driving of hyperfine or Zeeman sublevels of the nuclear levels. But the large difference in the frequencies of the driven and amplifying transitions leads to a number of difficulties, which could be essentially reduced in case of optical driving. However the absence of optical transitions in the structure of nuclear levels does not allow direct driving of nuclear transitions by laser radiation. We show that coherent optical driving of the electronic transitions can provide amplification without inversion (AWI) at gamma-ray nuclear transition in cases when the structure of the electronic levels is essentially modified by excitation of nucleus.
The optical properties of defect-perturbed
Er3+ and
Mn2+ ions in RbMg
F3 crystals have been investigated. Previous research has shown that
Mn2+ optical transitions can be enhanced by as much as
105 through spin coupling with a nearby
F center. This result has been further verified. Evidence is presented that radiation-defect---
Er3+ complexes can be formed in RbMg
F3. Both the perturbed
Mn2+ and
Er3+ have detectable optical transitions. Our analysis suggests that, although the perturbed
Er3+ transitions are shifted in energy, the oscillator strength of the ${\mathrm{Er}}^{3+}^{4}S_{\frac{3}{2}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{4}I_{\frac{15}{2}}$ transition is increased by at most an order of magnitude by the presence of
F centers. The $^{4}S_{\frac{3}{2}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{4}I_{\frac{15}{2}}$ transition for the radiation-defect-perturbed
Er3+ persists to room temperature and has a lifetime of 210 \ensuremath{\mu}s.
New scheme of a real-time all-optical switching (AOS) was demonstrated as the fluorescence signal of cesium two-photon transition (TPT) with the control field. This work explored the optical phenomenon of the TPT with the control field that shares a common excited state, in which the TPT fluorescence is quenched under the control field intensity. The strong stimulated emission due to the control laser suppresses the TPT fluorescence, working as an optical switch. A “NOT gate” is generated for realization of AOS. The power spectrum of the intensity range, which can be used for the AOS, is determined.
