Abstract

The optical properties of defect-perturbed ${\mathrm{Er}}^{3+}$ and ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{2+}$ ions in RbMg${\mathrm{F}}_{3}$ crystals have been investigated. Previous research has shown that ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{2+}$ optical transitions can be enhanced by as much as ${10}^{5}$ through spin coupling with a nearby $F$ center. This result has been further verified. Evidence is presented that radiation-defect---${\mathrm{Er}}^{3+}$ complexes can be formed in RbMg${\mathrm{F}}_{3}$. Both the perturbed ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{2+}$ and ${\mathrm{Er}}^{3+}$ have detectable optical transitions. Our analysis suggests that, although the perturbed ${\mathrm{Er}}^{3+}$ transitions are shifted in energy, the oscillator strength of the ${\mathrm{Er}}^{3+}^{4}S_{\frac{3}{2}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{4}I_{\frac{15}{2}}$ transition is increased by at most an order of magnitude by the presence of $F$ centers. The $^{4}S_{\frac{3}{2}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{4}I_{\frac{15}{2}}$ transition for the radiation-defect-perturbed ${\mathrm{Er}}^{3+}$ persists to room temperature and has a lifetime of 210 \ensuremath{\mu}s.

Stimulated emission from Er3+ions in yttrium aluminum garnet crystals at λ = 2.94 μ

Evgeny V. Zharikov, V I Zhekov, L. A. Kulevskiǐ +7 more

Stimulated emission due to the 4 I 11/2 – 4 I 13/2 transition (λ = 2.936 μ) in yttrium aluminum garnet (Y 3 Al 5 O 12 ) doped with Er 3+ ions (30 wt%) was observed for the first time at 300°K. The output energy from crystals of 50 × 3 mm dimensions was 0.3 J under free-oscillation conditions and 0.05 J in the case of Q switching. The lifetime of the 4 I 11/2 level was determined for crystals with 3–30 wt% Er 3+ . The energy from the higher Er 3+ levels relaxed in a cascade manner through 4 I 11/2 to 4 I 13/2 .

High Sensitivity Spin Defects in Carbon Implanted Diamond

Xingni Chai, Haidong Liang, Chengyuan Yang +4 more

Abstract The TR12 color center in diamond is a self‐interstitial spin defect capable of room‐temperature atomic‐scale vector magnetometry for detecting magnetic fields of arbitrary orientation and magnitude. Measurements using the TR12 center show that the sensing dynamic range can potentially outperform that of NV centers in diamond. The powerful quantum sensing capabilities of TR12 place it as a strong alternative candidate for quantum sensing in diamond, especially in extreme magnetic fields. However, its sensitivity in existing literature is relatively low in the µT/√Hz range. This work examines the spatial distributions of TR12 centers fabricated by high‐energy carbon irradiation on an E‐grade diamond along the ion irradiation cascade. A detailed study of photoluminescence intensity, optically detected magnetic resonance contrast, and linewidth is conducted. By varying locations along ion cascades of line irradiations with different fluences, the highest sensitivity of 1.2 nT/√Hz is achieved at three orders of magnitude higher than demonstrated in existing literatures. Coherent manipulation of triplet spin states in these ensembles is evident from Rabi oscillation measurements, with decoherence times of ≈0.47 µs at the surface and ≈ 0.42 µs at the end‐of‐range. These findings significantly enhance the potential of TR12 for quantum sensing applications.

Inhomogeneous broadening by nuclear spin fields: A new limit for optical transitions in solids

R. M. Macfarlane, Arlete Cassanho, Richard S. Meltzer

Using a low-strain, isotopically pure crystal of ${\mathrm{YLiF}}_{4}$, we have measured extremely narrow inhomogeneous linewidths (as low as 40 MHz) for the optical transitions of ${\mathrm{Er}}^{3+}$ impurities. Inhomogeneous broadening due to strains and other defects is so low that a new mechanism limits the inhomogeneous linewidth: local magnetic fields due to fluorine nuclear spins. These ultranarrow lines enabled us to make the first direct measurement of the isotope shifts of f-f transitions in a solid, and we find for the isotopes $^{164}\mathrm{Er}$, $^{166}\mathrm{Er}$, $^{168}\mathrm{Er}$, and $^{170}\mathrm{Er}$ a shift of 76\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2 MHz unit mass on the $^{4}$${\mathit{I}}_{15/2}$(1${)}^{4}$${\mathit{F}}_{9/2}$(1) transition. We show that this is consistent with a mechanism of coupling to zero-point vibrations.

Third- and fourth-order analysis of the intensities and polarization dependence of two-photon absorption lines of Gd3+ in La F3 and aqueous solution

M. C. Downer, Albert Bivas

A comprehensive report and analysis of our observations of numerous parity-allowed direct two-photon transitions within the $4{f}^{7}$ configuration of the ${\mathrm{Gd}}^{3+}$ ion is presented. The experimental technique is ultraviolet fluorescence detection following optical excitation with a dye-laser beam. Previous results and analyses are extended in three ways. (1) The intensities and polarization dependence of individual Stark components, in addition to integrated multiplet intensities, are reported and analyzed for ${\mathrm{Gd}}^{3+}$:La${\mathrm{F}}_{3}$. In those cases ($^{8}S_{\frac{7}{2}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{6}P_{\frac{5}{2}},^{6}D_{\frac{9}{2},\frac{3}{2},\frac{5}{2}}$) where a second-order theory of two-photon absorption adequately explains the integrated intensity, it also (with the exception of $^{6}D_{\frac{9}{2}}$) explains the Stark-component intensities. The remaining transitions are anomalously strong, and in some cases violate the angular momentum selection rules $\ensuremath{\Delta}L,\ensuremath{\Delta}J\ensuremath{\le}2$ and exhibit strong anisotropies, in contradiction to the second-order theory. It is shown that introduction of third- and fourth-order contributions involving spin-orbit and/or crystal-field interactions among levels of the $4{f}^{6}5d$ configuration, which serve as intermediate states, can account for both the integrated and Stark-component intensities of these transitions. (2) The strong anisotropy observed for the transitions $^{8}S_{\frac{7}{2}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{6}P_{\frac{3}{2}},^{6}I_{J},^{6}D_{\frac{1}{2}}$ in ${\mathrm{Gd}}^{3+}$:La${\mathrm{F}}_{3}$ is explained quantitatively as a polarization-dependent interference between contributions to the intensity which are comparable in magnitude. Interference is destructive for $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{E}\ensuremath{\parallel}\stackrel{^}{z}$ and constructive for $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{E}\ensuremath{\perp}\stackrel{^}{z}$, creating an order-of-magnitude contrast in the line strength for the two polarizations. (3) A two-photon excitation spectrum of ${\mathrm{Gd}}^{3+}$ in aqueous solution is reported. Linewidths comparable to those of room-temperature solids and Stark splittings which suggest a low-symmetry quasistatic environment are observed.

IRQC parameters for Er3+ occupying sites of C2v and C3v symmetry in CdF2

Norman E. Byer, T. C. Ensign, William M. Mularie +1 more

Measurements have been made of the optical parameters relevant to the operation of the Er3+ infrared quantum counter (IRQC) proposed recently to detect 1.5-μm radiation. The CdF2:Er3+ crystals used for this purpose were prepared under specific conditions selected to provide different local site symmetries at the Er3+ ions. EPR measurements were employed to determine the site symmetries and the relative concentration of ions at the various sites. In particular, high concentrations of C2v sites were generated by double doping with NaF prior to crystalline growth [CdF2: (Er3+,Na+)], whereas C3v sites were generated preferentially by oxygen firing sodium-free crystals subsequent to growth [CdF2: (Er3+,O2−)]. Selective generation of these two sites permitted the unambiguous determination of their characteristic optical absorption, emission, and excitation spectra, as well as the lifetimes and radiative efficiencies of relevant excited states. In addition, double excitation using two ir sources simultaneously, was used to determine the cross section for transitions between the 4I13/2 and 4S3/2 excited states and the lifetime of the former state. The optical properties of the Er3+ ion were observed to be sensitive to the local environment associated with each site and, in particular, to the magnitude of the noncubic component of the crystalline field. Phase-lag measurements confirmed the successive-excitation model proposed to explain the conversion of 1.5-μm radiation to 540- or 660-nm radiation in the presence of an 840-nm pump. Cooperative-excitation processes, on the other hand, were observed to produce 660-nm emission when 790- or 970-nm pumps were employed. The dependence of the over-all IRQC quantum efficiency on pump flux and on the optical parameters of Er3+ is derived from solutions to the appropriate rate equations. The analysis indicates that the performance of the 1.5-μm Er:IRQC, utilizing an 840-nm pump, is nearly optimized for CdF2: (Er3+,O2−).
