Continuous control of the coupling constant in an atom-cavity system by using elliptic polarization and magnetic sublevels

Sungsam Kang, Youngwoon Choi, Sooin Lim +4 more

Atom-cavity coupling constant is a key parameter in cavity quantum electrodynamics for describing the interaction between an atom and a quantized electromagnetic field in a cavity. This paper reports a novel way to tune the coupling constant continuously by inducing an averaging of the atomic dipole moment over degenerate magnetic sublevels with elliptic polarization of the cavity field. We present an analytic solution of the stationary-state density matrix for this system with consideration of F -> F +1 hyperfine transition under a weak excitation condition. We rigorously show that the stationary-state emission spectra of this system can be approximated by that of a non-degenerate two-level atom with an effective coupling constant as a function of the elliptic angle of the cavity field only. A precise condition for this approximation is derived and its physical meaning is interpreted in terms of a population-averaged transition strength and its variance. Our results can be used to control the coupling constant in cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments with a degenerate two-level atom with magnetic sublevels. Possible applications of our results are discussed.

Effects of probe ellipticity and longitudinal magnetic field on the polarization rotation in a coherently prepared atomic medium

Arpita Das, Bankim Chandra Das, Dipankar Bhattacharyya +1 more

The dependencies of the polarization rotation on the probe ellipticity and the longitudinal magnetic field have been studied both experimentally and theoretically in a V-type electromagnetically induced transparency for 87Rb vapour. The angle of rotation varies periodically with the change in the probe ellipticity and non-linearly with the variation of the magnetic field. We have observed that the plane of polarization is rotated maximum for linearly polarized light and have obtained angle of rotation 0.32° ± 0.01° for B = 0.036 ± 0.001 mT while it was 0.0267° ± 0.0002° without magnetic field. Thus our measurement becomes sensitive to the low magnetic field. A four-level system is considered and the corresponding density matrix equations have been solved analytically to explain these observations theoretically with the help of degenerate and non-degenerate magnetic sub-levels.

Coherent population trapping resonance on degenerate two-level system for magnetic field measurement

Emilia A. Alipieva, S. Gateva, Elena T. Taskova

Coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances on the degenerate two-level system of the (Fg=2→Fe=1) transition of the 87Rb D1 line were investigated in an uncoated vacuum cell by means of level-crossing type experiments-sweeping a magnetic field around zero value and using a single laser beam. The two-photon resonance manifests itself as fluorescence canceling when the system of levels is degenerate (at zero point of magnetic field). The influence of weak transverse magnetic fields on the amplitude and width of the resonance was investigated. The CPT resonances were observed with linear, circular and elliptical polarized laser light. Transverse magnetic field widens the resonances obtained by linear and circular polarization but splits the resonance created by slightly elliptically polarized laser light. The dependence of this splitting on the elliptical ratio and experimental geometry were investigated. Due to its narrow width and sensitivity to low magnetic fields (< 1 G) this resonance is very promising for small magnetic field measurement.
