Abstract

Atom-cavity coupling constant is a key parameter in cavity quantum electrodynamics for describing the interaction between an atom and a quantized electromagnetic field in a cavity. This paper reports a novel way to tune the coupling constant continuously by inducing an averaging of the atomic dipole moment over degenerate magnetic sublevels with elliptic polarization of the cavity field. We present an analytic solution of the stationary-state density matrix for this system with consideration of F -> F +1 hyperfine transition under a weak excitation condition. We rigorously show that the stationary-state emission spectra of this system can be approximated by that of a non-degenerate two-level atom with an effective coupling constant as a function of the elliptic angle of the cavity field only. A precise condition for this approximation is derived and its physical meaning is interpreted in terms of a population-averaged transition strength and its variance. Our results can be used to control the coupling constant in cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments with a degenerate two-level atom with magnetic sublevels. Possible applications of our results are discussed.

Stationary solution of a weak-driven open Jaynes-Cummings system of a degenerate two-level atom coupled to an arbitrary-polarized cavity field

Sungsam Kang, Youngwoon Choi, Sooin Lim +3 more

Analytical solution for the stationary density matrix is derived, by using the Morris-Shore transformation, for an open Jaynes-Cummings system of a two-level atom with Zeeman sublevel degeneracy coupled to an arbitrary-polarized cavity mode. In the limit of weak excitation with the number of quantum in the system not exceeding one, we have obtained the stationary solution of the master equation up to the first order of the driving field intensity. We have also derived the analytic expressions for the excitation spectra of atomic spontaneous emission and cavity transmission. Our results show that the system can be regarded as a non-degenerate two-level system with a single effective coupling constant which depends only on the elliptic angle of the driving field as long as the atom-cavity coupling is not too strong. A precise condition for this approximation is derived. This work provides a theoretical ground for experimentally realizing a Jaynes-Cummings system with a coupling constant continuously varied for various cavity quantum electrodynamics studies.

Beyond the Rabi model: Light interactions with polar atomic systems in a cavity

Giovanni Scala, Karolina Słowik, Paolo Facchi A +2 more

The Rabi Hamiltonian, describing the interaction between a two-level atomic system and a single-cavity mode of the electromagnetic field, is one of the fundamental models in quantum optics. The model becomes exactly solvable by considering an atom without permanent dipole moments, whose excitation energy is quasiresonant with the cavity photon energy, and by neglecting the nonresonant (counter-rotating) terms. In this case, after including the decay of either the atom or the cavity mode to a continuum, one can derive the well-known phenomenology of quasiresonant transitions, including the fluorescence triplets. In this work we consider the most general Rabi model, incorporating the effects of permanent atomic electric dipole moments. Based on a perturbative analysis, we compare the intensities of emission lines induced by rotating terms, counter-rotating terms, and parity-symmetry-breaking terms in order to identify the parameter regimes in which these different contributions play a significant role. The analysis reveals that the emission strength related to the existence of permanent dipoles may surpass the one due to the counter-rotating interaction terms but is usually much weaker than the emission due to the main, resonant coupling. This ratio can be modified in systems with a reduced dimensionality or by engineering the energy spectral density of the continuum.

The effect of a permanent dipole moment on the polar molecule cavity quantum electrodynamics

赵晶云, 秦立国, 蔡勋明 +2 more

A dressed-state perturbation theory beyond the rotating wave approximation(RWA) is presented to investigate the interaction between a two-level electronic transition of polar molecules and a quantized cavity field. Analytical expressions can be explicitly derived for both the ground- and excited-state-energy spectrums and wave functions of the system, where the contribution of permanent dipole moments(PDM) and the counter-rotating wave term(CRT) can be shown separately. The validity of these explicit results is discussed by comparison with the direct numerical simulation. Compared to the CRT coupling, PDM results in the coupling of more dressed states and the energy shift is proportional to the square of the normalized permanent dipole difference, and a greater Bloch–Siegert shift can be produced in the giant dipole molecule cavity QED. In addition, our method can also be extended to the solution of the two-level atom Rabi model Hamiltonian beyond the RWA.更多还原

The dynamics of an atom-field system with degenerate atomic levels and a polarization-degenerate mode of the quantised field in a damped micro-cavity

Решетов Владимир Александрович

Abstract The master equation for the atom-field system with degenerate atomic levels and two polarization modes of the quantized field in a damped micro-cavity is obtained in the basis of eigenvectors of the interaction operator. The solution for the lossless cavity is obtained. The analytic expressions for the probability of emission of the photon in the cavity by an excited atom and of the photon polarization matrix are derived in the ‘strong coupling’ and ‘bad cavity’ approximations for arbitrary values of angular momenta of atomic levels. The dependence of the photon polarization on the polarization of the short excitation pulse is studied.
