Abstract

Abstract The master equation for the atom-field system with degenerate atomic levels and two polarization modes of the quantized field in a damped micro-cavity is obtained in the basis of eigenvectors of the interaction operator. The solution for the lossless cavity is obtained. The analytic expressions for the probability of emission of the photon in the cavity by an excited atom and of the photon polarization matrix are derived in the ‘strong coupling’ and ‘bad cavity’ approximations for arbitrary values of angular momenta of atomic levels. The dependence of the photon polarization on the polarization of the short excitation pulse is studied.

Photon emission by an atom with degenerate levels into a micro-cavity with polarization-degenerate mode

Abstract The emission of a photon by an atom with degenerate levels into a micro-cavity with a single polarization-degenerate mode is studied theoretically with an account of irreversible relaxation of the atom–field system for the atomic excitation by a short laser pulse as well as by means of vacuum-stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. The analytic expressions for the probability of emission of the photon in the cavity and for the photon polarization matrix are derived in the ’strong-coupling’ and ‘bad-cavity’ approximations for arbitrary values of angular momenta of atomic levels. The dependence of the photon polarization on the polarization of the control laser field is studied. It is shown that the degree of photon polarization may be varied from zero (maximum atom–photon entanglement) to unity (disentangled atom and photon) by means of the control-field polarization.

CAVITY QED WITH DEGENERATE ATOMIC LEVELS AND POLARIZATION-DEGENERATE FIELD MODE

Решетов Владимир Александрович

The Jaynes – Cummings model with degenerate atomic levels and polarization-degenerate field mode is considered. The general expression for the system evolution operator is derived. The analytical expressions for such operators in the case of low values (J ≤3/2) of atomic angular momentum are obtained. The polarization properties of the photon emitted into the cavity by an excited atom are studied with an account of relaxation processes for arbitrary angular momenta of atomic levels.

Jaynes–Cummings model with degenerate atomic levels and two polarization modes of the quantized field

Решетов Владимир Александрович

Abstract The Jaynes–Cummings model describing the interaction of two polarization modes of the quantized electromagnetic field with an isolated two-level atom with the levels degenerate in the projections of the angular momenta on the quantization axis is studied. The general expression for the evolution operator for such a model is obtained. The examples of low values of the level angular momenta or single photon in the cavity are discussed.

Jaynes-Cummings model with degenerate atomic levels

Решетов Владимир Александрович

The Jaynes-Cummings model describing the interaction of a single linearly- polarized mode of the quantized electromagnetic field with an isolated two- level atom is generalized to the case of atomic levels degenerate in the projections of the angular momenta on the quantization axis, which is a usual case in the experiments. This generalization, like the original model, obtains the explicit solution. The model is applied to calculate the dependence of the atomic level populations on the angle between the polarization of cavity field mode and that of the laser excitation pulse in the experiment with one-atom micromaser.

Stationary solution of a weak-driven open Jaynes-Cummings system of a degenerate two-level atom coupled to an arbitrary-polarized cavity field

Sungsam Kang, Youngwoon Choi, Sooin Lim +3 more

Analytical solution for the stationary density matrix is derived, by using the Morris-Shore transformation, for an open Jaynes-Cummings system of a two-level atom with Zeeman sublevel degeneracy coupled to an arbitrary-polarized cavity mode. In the limit of weak excitation with the number of quantum in the system not exceeding one, we have obtained the stationary solution of the master equation up to the first order of the driving field intensity. We have also derived the analytic expressions for the excitation spectra of atomic spontaneous emission and cavity transmission. Our results show that the system can be regarded as a non-degenerate two-level system with a single effective coupling constant which depends only on the elliptic angle of the driving field as long as the atom-cavity coupling is not too strong. A precise condition for this approximation is derived. This work provides a theoretical ground for experimentally realizing a Jaynes-Cummings system with a coupling constant continuously varied for various cavity quantum electrodynamics studies.

Quantum optical master equations: The use of damping bases

Hans‐Jürgen Briegel, Berthold‐Georg Englert

We present the complete analytical solution of the cavity QED of a two-level atom and a field mode at zero temperature. It includes both dissipation of the field due to a finite Q value of the cavity and incoherent decay mechanisms for the atom. This analytical solution is provided by a powerful method for treating general master equations that appear in quantum optics. As distinct from the usual approaches we first deal with that part of the master equation which describes the dissipative coupling of the field and the atom to their reservoirs. Rather than using number-state or dressed-state bases we expand the density operator into the eigenstates of the nonunitary parts of the master equation which model the dissipative part of the dynamics. The set of these eigenstates is the damping basis. With the aid of this expansion we find the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the total Liouville operator. The evolution of an arbitrary initial state is then known. We employ these results to give an exact solution of the dynamics of the photon field in realistic experiments with one-atom masers at very low temperatures. It includes detuning, cavity leakage effects, spontaneous decay mechanisms for the atoms, a Fizeau-type velocity distribution for the atomic beam, and a statistical parameter for the probability of the excitation of incoming atoms, covering the limits of Poissonian pumping and of regular pumping. On the same grounds one can treat the one-atom laser, consisting of a single atom which stays in permanent interaction with the field mode and which is continuously pumped by external heat baths.
