Abstract

Surface plasmon (SP)-induced spectral hole burning (SHB) at the silver-dielectric interface is investigated theoretically. We notice a typical lamb dip at a selective frequency, which abruptly reduces the absorption spectrum of the surface plasmons polaritons (SPP). Introducing the spontaneous generated coherence (SGC) in the atomic medium, the slope of dispersion becomes normal. Additionally, slow SPP propagation is also noticed at the interface. The spectral hole burning dip is enhanced with the SGC effect and can be modified and controlled with the frequency and intensity of the driving fields. The SPP propagation length at the hole-burning region is greatly enhanced under the effect of SGC. A propagation length of the order of 600 µm is achieved for the modes, which is a remarkable result. The enhancement of plasmon hole burning under SGC will find significant applications in sensing technology, optical communication, optical tweezers and nano-photonics.

Abstract We theoretically investigate the spectral hole burning of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at an interface between rubidium ( 87 Rb) atomic medium and silver. A typical Lamb dip can be observed at a certain frequency where the absorption of SPPs is suddenly reduced. By applying Kerr-type nonlinearity to the 87 Rb atomic gas, the slope of dispersion becomes more normal and steeper. Under the effect of Doppler broadening, a group index of at the SPPs hole burning region is obtained and is further enhanced to with the application of Kerr-nonlinearity. Similarly, the propagation length of SPPs is increased at the hole burning region and is further enhanced with Kerr-nonlinearity. Further, we show that this nonlinear effect results in the enhancement of the phase shift from 0.02 to 1.5 radian at the hole burning region. These results may find important applications in nano-photonics, optical tweezers, photovoltaic devices and sensing technology.

Spectral hole burning of surface plasmon polaritons via soliton waves at the interface of sodium and gold media

Roidar Khan, Muhammad Haneef, Maqsood Iqbal +4 more

Abstract We investigate the possibility of creating spectral hole burning in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the interface of sodium vapor and gold media. The spectral holes are measured at specific parameters, phases and directions of the control fields. The direction and phase of the control field affect the creation of spectral hole burning in SPPs the most. The pulse shape in the spectral burning hole region is uniform and undistorted due to the cancellation of nonlinear Doppler broadening and large group velocity dispersion. The behavior of SPPs pulse in the spectral hole region is that of solitons, which arise due to cancellation of large positive dispersion for phase shift with nonlinear effect.. The results may have potential applications in nano-photonics, plasmonsters, photovoltaic devices, cloaking and sensing technology.

Surface plasmon hole burning via doppler broadening

Farman Ullah, Umer Wahid, Bakht Amin +1 more

Abstract The hole burning phenomenon is investigated in a five-level atomic configuration at the interface of cesium and gold in the presence of Doppler broadening. The group index and refractive index of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) becomes equal in the hole burning region, which display that the phase and group velocities of SPPs are matched. The propagation length during absorption of SPPs decreases with the decrease of absorption, while there are increases with amplification of SPPs. This study could have significant applications in optical storage devices, telecommunication, imaging, and enhancement of plasmonster memory.

Surface Plasmon Polaritions via Squeezed Vacuum States

Hazrat Ali, Shawana Qayum, Nadia Boutabba

In this paper, we study a dielectric under a squeezed vacuum state, a thermal field and a normal vacuum state. The dielectric atoms are considered to be in a three-level lambda type configuration, where a weak probe field induces and generates surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the silver and dielectric interface. Therefore, to get deeper insights into the dispersion and absorption spectra, the propagation length as well as the skin depth, we investigate the coherence of the system. Hence, we demonstrate thatthe strong laser used to couple the intermediate level to the upper excited state, has a drastic effect on the generated SPPs wavelength at the interface. Additionally, the system properties are fully controlled by the average photon number, the thermal field, the normal vacuum and the squeezed vacuum state. Finally, in an attempt to elaborate a straightforward technique that manipulates the Lsp ( surface plasmon length ) distance we control the system by simultaneously tuning the phase and the control field in a very specific detuning region. This might be of interest to the engineering of miniature nano-photonic devices and circuits where the sub-wavelength property is required.

Coherent control of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-based surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) using system parameters

Rakiba Rahaman, Samim Akhtar, Jayanta K. Saha +1 more

Abstract We present a comprehensive theoretical study on the controlling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excitation at the metal–dielectric (silver-Rb atoms) interface using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The results demonstrate that the excitation of SPPs can efficiently be controlled by utilizing the system parameters, e . g . atomic density, pump Rabi frequency and metal thickness. A significant probe field enhancement is achieved by adjusting the pump Rabi frequency and atomic number density, and it can be further optimized by precise tuning of the metal thickness. The resonance angle as well as reflection and transmission of the probe field are found to be highly sensitive to the probe frequency detuning. A notable displacement of the probe transmission peak position is also observed with the increasing pump Rabi frequency. These findings provide tunable control of SPPs using an EIT medium, which may find potential applications in the domains of quantum plasmonic sensor-based devices and quantum communication.

Spectral Hole Burning via Kerr Nonlinearity*

Anwar Ali Khan, M S Abdul Jabar, M. Jalaluddin +2 more

Abstract Spectral hole burning is investigated in an optical medium in the presence of Doppler broadening and Kerr nonlinearity. The Kerr nonlinearity generates coherent hole burning in the absorption spectrum. The higher order Kerr nonlinearity enhances the typical lamb dip of the hole. Normal dispersion in the hole burning region while Steep anomalous dispersion between the two hole burning regions also enhances with higher order Kerr effect. A large phase shift creates large delay or advancement in the pulse propagation while no distortion is observed in the pulse. These results provide significant steps to improve optical memory, telecom devices, preservation of information and image quality.
