Abstract

Abstract We investigate the possibility of creating spectral hole burning in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the interface of sodium vapor and gold media. The spectral holes are measured at specific parameters, phases and directions of the control fields. The direction and phase of the control field affect the creation of spectral hole burning in SPPs the most. The pulse shape in the spectral burning hole region is uniform and undistorted due to the cancellation of nonlinear Doppler broadening and large group velocity dispersion. The behavior of SPPs pulse in the spectral hole region is that of solitons, which arise due to cancellation of large positive dispersion for phase shift with nonlinear effect.. The results may have potential applications in nano-photonics, plasmonsters, photovoltaic devices, cloaking and sensing technology.

Incoherent and coherent manipulation of surface plasmon hole burning

Abstract We theoretically investigate the spectral hole burning of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at an interface between rubidium ( 87 Rb) atomic medium and silver. A typical Lamb dip can be observed at a certain frequency where the absorption of SPPs is suddenly reduced. By applying Kerr-type nonlinearity to the 87 Rb atomic gas, the slope of dispersion becomes more normal and steeper. Under the effect of Doppler broadening, a group index of at the SPPs hole burning region is obtained and is further enhanced to with the application of Kerr-nonlinearity. Similarly, the propagation length of SPPs is increased at the hole burning region and is further enhanced with Kerr-nonlinearity. Further, we show that this nonlinear effect results in the enhancement of the phase shift from 0.02 to 1.5 radian at the hole burning region. These results may find important applications in nano-photonics, optical tweezers, photovoltaic devices and sensing technology.

Surface plasmon hole burning via doppler broadening

Farman Ullah, Umer Wahid, Bakht Amin +1 more

Abstract The hole burning phenomenon is investigated in a five-level atomic configuration at the interface of cesium and gold in the presence of Doppler broadening. The group index and refractive index of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) becomes equal in the hole burning region, which display that the phase and group velocities of SPPs are matched. The propagation length during absorption of SPPs decreases with the decrease of absorption, while there are increases with amplification of SPPs. This study could have significant applications in optical storage devices, telecommunication, imaging, and enhancement of plasmonster memory.

Coherent Surface Plasmon Hole Burning via Spontaneously Generated Coherence

Habibur Rahman, Hazrat Ali, Rafi Ud Din +3 more

Surface plasmon (SP)-induced spectral hole burning (SHB) at the silver-dielectric interface is investigated theoretically. We notice a typical lamb dip at a selective frequency, which abruptly reduces the absorption spectrum of the surface plasmons polaritons (SPP). Introducing the spontaneous generated coherence (SGC) in the atomic medium, the slope of dispersion becomes normal. Additionally, slow SPP propagation is also noticed at the interface. The spectral hole burning dip is enhanced with the SGC effect and can be modified and controlled with the frequency and intensity of the driving fields. The SPP propagation length at the hole-burning region is greatly enhanced under the effect of SGC. A propagation length of the order of 600 µm is achieved for the modes, which is a remarkable result. The enhancement of plasmon hole burning under SGC will find significant applications in sensing technology, optical communication, optical tweezers and nano-photonics.

Phase and velocity sensitivity of surface plasmon polaritons at the interface of atomic and nano-composites media

Gohar Zeb Khan, Imrana Ashraf, Arif Ullah +1 more

Abstract The phase and velocity sensitivity is calculated at the interface of three level atomic medium and a Silver Silica (AgSiO 2 ) nano-composites material by surface plasmon polaritons waves. A large kink in the real part of dispersion relation of SPPs is measured in the large interaction zone, due to which the group velocity and delay/advance times of SPPs are enhanced. A group velocity of v g = ±1 × 10 9 m s −1 is measured at the group index region of 0 < n g < 1 and −1 < n g < 0. The propagation time is measured to be t g = ±1 × 10 −7 s at the propagation length L x ( m ) and at v g = ±1 × 10 9 m s −1 in the range of group index of 0 < n g < 1 and −1 < n g < 0. The volume fractional change of nano particles, probe/control field detuning and Rabi frequency of control field significantly influence the velocity sensitivity. The velocity sensitivity is measured to be 23 μ m s −1 by SPPs. The velocity sensitivity could be improved to 0.1 μ m s −1 by taking large ensemble of atomic coherence and large delay/advance in time due to SPPs.

Coherent control of dark and bright spatio-temporal solitons of SPPs at a silver silica nano-composite interface with gain-assisted atomic medium

Naseem Elahi, Muhammad Ikram, Najm Uddin +4 more

This article investigates the coherent control of spatio-temporal bright and dark soliton pulses along with the associated intensity of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves at the interface of silver-silica nano-composite materials and a gain-assisted medium. A considerable control over SPPs soliton pulses is revealed by varying the position, time, and characteristics of the applied driving fields. The strength of solitonic pulses can vary based on system factors, potentially increasing, decreasing, or remaining constant over time. Periodic dark and bright solitons are also observed, with intensity patterns exhibiting exponential decay over time. When dispersion and nonlinearity are compared, stable solitons may maintain a constant intensity level of 60%. Moreover, the strength of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be adjusted between 0 and 100%. This adjustment is achieved by modifying external fields, allowing for either complete enhancement or total suppression of the SPPs. These findings provide a solid foundation for the development of active, compact, and fast photonic devices. They bridge the gap between light-matter interactions at the quantum level and the advancement of integrated nano-photonic devices. Such devices encompass applications in nano-scale sensing, logic gates, electrochemical sensing, optical switching, and biomedical imaging.

Spectral Hole Burning via Kerr Nonlinearity*

Anwar Ali Khan, M S Abdul Jabar, M. Jalaluddin +2 more

Abstract Spectral hole burning is investigated in an optical medium in the presence of Doppler broadening and Kerr nonlinearity. The Kerr nonlinearity generates coherent hole burning in the absorption spectrum. The higher order Kerr nonlinearity enhances the typical lamb dip of the hole. Normal dispersion in the hole burning region while Steep anomalous dispersion between the two hole burning regions also enhances with higher order Kerr effect. A large phase shift creates large delay or advancement in the pulse propagation while no distortion is observed in the pulse. These results provide significant steps to improve optical memory, telecom devices, preservation of information and image quality.
