Abstract

Spectral holes burning are controlled and modified in a four-level sodium hot atomic medium. Two spectral holes are measured in the absorption spectrum, which are associated with steep normal dispersive regions. The group velocity is slowed down in this normal dispersive region from vacuum speed vg << c. The spectral hole occurs at the phase pc — T/ 2 with equal depths and equal normal dispersion on both sides of the resonance point. The spectral hole occurs at the phase pc < T/ 2 with unequal depths and unequal normal dispersion on both sides of the resonance point. The depth of the spectral hole at the negative detuning is smaller, and the spectral hole at positive detuning is larger when pc < n/ 2, while it shows contrasting behavior at pc > T/ 2. This work shows significant variation in spectral holes with the collective phase of control fields and the corresponding enhanced and degraded steepness of normal dispersion in the regions of spectral holes burning.

Spectral Hole Burning via Kerr Nonlinearity*

Anwar Ali Khan, M S Abdul Jabar, M. Jalaluddin +2 more

Abstract Spectral hole burning is investigated in an optical medium in the presence of Doppler broadening and Kerr nonlinearity. The Kerr nonlinearity generates coherent hole burning in the absorption spectrum. The higher order Kerr nonlinearity enhances the typical lamb dip of the hole. Normal dispersion in the hole burning region while Steep anomalous dispersion between the two hole burning regions also enhances with higher order Kerr effect. A large phase shift creates large delay or advancement in the pulse propagation while no distortion is observed in the pulse. These results provide significant steps to improve optical memory, telecom devices, preservation of information and image quality.

Controlled multiple spectral hole burning via a tripod-type atomic medium

Gul Tiaz, Haleema Sadia Qureshi, Shakir Ullah +1 more

Abstract In limit of saturation spectroscopy, we theoretically study the spectral hole burning (SHB) in the absorption spectrum of a probe field through a tripod atomic system. The response function for the probe field is calculated in a Doppler-broadened medium. Burning of spectral holes is observed only for the counter propagation of either one or both the coupling fields in the medium. The SHB is not observed below some critical temperature which is a condition for the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the medium. The most interesting and significant feature is that the Doppler broadening acts as a decoherence effect in case of EIT, however, the Doppler broadening acts inversely in case of SHB and consequently the burning effect enhances. The SHB is further enhanced and controlled by classes of the average velocity of atoms. The classes of high average atomic velocity in the medium increase the number of spectral hole burns (HBs). The widths of HBs can be controlled by the intensity of the driving fields. A single HB can be switched to multiple HBs in a well-controlled manner using different classes of high average atomic velocity. The various switchable holes can be burned in a desired position of the absorption spectrum which in turn simultaneously slow down multiple probe fields. The phenomenon of SHB may be useful in the construction of multichannel optical switching and storage devices.

Slow light based on coherent hole-burning in a Doppler broadened three-level Λ-type atomic system

Shang-qi Kuang, Peng Dong Du, Ren-Gang Wan +2 more

We show theoretically that the propagation of light can be slowed down considerably using the method of coherent hole-burning in a Doppler broadened three-level lambda-type atomic medium without the Doppler-free configurations. The reduction of group velocity of light pulse is achieved by the application of a saturating beam and a strong coupling beam which produce a narrow spectral hole-burning at resonance. We can obtain a larger group index than that using the method of saturation absorption spectroscopy in Doppler-broadened two-level atomic systems.

Hole-burning in an Autler-Townes doublet and in superluminal (subluminal) Electromagnetically induced transparency of a light pulse via a joint nonlinear coherent Kerr effect and Doppler broadening

Bakht Amin Bacha, Fazal Ghafoor, Iftikhar Ahmad

We investigate the behavior of light pulse propagation in a 4-level double Lambda atomic system under condition of electromagnetically induced transparency. The Fano type interference effect and spectral hole burning appears in the the dynamics of the absorption-dispersion spectra caused by the joint nonlinear coherence Kerr effect and Doppler broadening. The coherent Kerr effect exhibits an enhancement (reduction) in superluminal (subluminal) in negative (in positive) group index while the Doppler broadening generates multiple hole burning in the Autler-Townes like spectra of this system. The hole burning in addition with coherent Kerr effect on the spectral profile influences the dynamics of subluminal and superluminal of the probe pulse through the medium. The characteristics of superluminality and subluminality modified by considering cold-Kerr-free medium and hot-Kerr-dependent mediums. The light pulse delays and advances in different regions of dispersion medium with the Doppler broadening and coherent Kerr effect. Consequently, the pulse delays by $49μs$, while advance by $-91μs$, for a same set of parameters [note: a revised version is under preparation

Spectral hole burning of surface plasmon polaritons via soliton waves at the interface of sodium and gold media

Roidar Khan, Muhammad Haneef, Maqsood Iqbal +4 more

Abstract We investigate the possibility of creating spectral hole burning in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the interface of sodium vapor and gold media. The spectral holes are measured at specific parameters, phases and directions of the control fields. The direction and phase of the control field affect the creation of spectral hole burning in SPPs the most. The pulse shape in the spectral burning hole region is uniform and undistorted due to the cancellation of nonlinear Doppler broadening and large group velocity dispersion. The behavior of SPPs pulse in the spectral hole region is that of solitons, which arise due to cancellation of large positive dispersion for phase shift with nonlinear effect.. The results may have potential applications in nano-photonics, plasmonsters, photovoltaic devices, cloaking and sensing technology.

Tunable superluminal propagation at spectral hole-burning regions in magneto-optical atomic medium

Aizaz Khan, Xiaoying Gu, Lei Gao +3 more

In the context of spectral hole-burning, normal dispersion with subluminal propagation is usually observed in the spectral hole-burning depth region. However, anomalous dispersion can occur in the continuous absorption peak region, which leads to superluminal light propagation. In this paper, we report an unusual behaviour of dispersion at discontinued absorption kink regions. We demonstrate both normal dispersion at the kink absorption region and anomalous dispersion at the spectral hole-burning depth region. The unusual dispersion leads to a positive group index in the absorption kink region and a negative group index in the spectral hole-burning depth region. The spectral hole-burning is due to variation of magnetization rather than the molecular distribution. The outcomes of our work offer promising applications in communication technologies and storage devices.
