Abstract

We investigate the behavior of light pulse propagation in a 4-level double Lambda atomic system under condition of electromagnetically induced transparency. The Fano type interference effect and spectral hole burning appears in the the dynamics of the absorption-dispersion spectra caused by the joint nonlinear coherence Kerr effect and Doppler broadening. The coherent Kerr effect exhibits an enhancement (reduction) in superluminal (subluminal) in negative (in positive) group index while the Doppler broadening generates multiple hole burning in the Autler-Townes like spectra of this system. The hole burning in addition with coherent Kerr effect on the spectral profile influences the dynamics of subluminal and superluminal of the probe pulse through the medium. The characteristics of superluminality and subluminality modified by considering cold-Kerr-free medium and hot-Kerr-dependent mediums. The light pulse delays and advances in different regions of dispersion medium with the Doppler broadening and coherent Kerr effect. Consequently, the pulse delays by $49μs$, while advance by $-91μs$, for a same set of parameters [note: a revised version is under preparation

The effect of Kerr nonlinearity and Doppler broadening on slow light propagation

Hazrat Ali, Ziauddin Ziauddin, Iftikhar Ahmad

The influence of Kerr nonlinearity and Doppler broadening on the slow light propagation of a dispersive atomic medium is revisited using a four-level ?-type (87Rb) atomic system under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The medium exhibits an EIT process which is accompanied by normal dispersion, i.e.,?sub-luminal (slow light) pulse propagation. In the presence of Kerr nonlinearity and the Doppler broadening effect the dispersion property of the proposed atomic medium is modified, which leads to enhancement of the positive group index of the medium. The combined effect of Kerr nonlinearity and Doppler broadening on slow light propagation inside the medium is the major motivation for this work.

Subluminal and superluminal pulse propagation influenced by strong nonlinear effects

Zengguang Chang, Yihong Qi, Yueping Niu +2 more

A scheme is proposed for control of pulse propagation from subluminal to superluminal in a four-level Λ-type atomic system. With the relatively intense probe laser and the appropriate detuning of control field, the medium exhibits much lower absorption in the spectral ranges where the dispersion changes from normal to abnormal in the double electromagnetically induced transparency system than in the single electromagnetically induced transparency system. The transmission intensity can be enhanced by several times for the subluminal pulse propagation and by several orders of magnitude for the superluminal pulse propagation without the large distortion in the former compared with those in the latter. We attribute the dramatic absorption reduction to the enhanced nonlinear effects.

Spectral Hole Burning via Kerr Nonlinearity*

Anwar Ali Khan, M S Abdul Jabar, M. Jalaluddin +2 more

Abstract Spectral hole burning is investigated in an optical medium in the presence of Doppler broadening and Kerr nonlinearity. The Kerr nonlinearity generates coherent hole burning in the absorption spectrum. The higher order Kerr nonlinearity enhances the typical lamb dip of the hole. Normal dispersion in the hole burning region while Steep anomalous dispersion between the two hole burning regions also enhances with higher order Kerr effect. A large phase shift creates large delay or advancement in the pulse propagation while no distortion is observed in the pulse. These results provide significant steps to improve optical memory, telecom devices, preservation of information and image quality.

Phase-Controlled Transparent Superluminal Light Propagation in a Doppler-Broadened Four-Level N-Type System

Lida Ebrahimi Zohravi, Majid Abedi, Mohammad Mahmoudi

The propagation of a weak probe field in a four-level N-type quantum system in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) is theoretically investigated. The optical properties of the system are studied and it is shown that the group velocity of light pulse can be controlled by relative phase of applied fields. By changing the relative phase of applied fields, the group velocity of light pulse changes from transparent subluminal to the transparent superluminal light propagation. Thus, the phase-controlled absorption-free superluminal light propagation is obtained without applying an incoherent laser fields to the system. The propagation of a weak probe light pulse is studied by solving the Maxwell's wave equation on numerical grid in space and time. Moreover, we study the third order self- and cross-Kerr susceptibility of probe field and calculate the nonlinear cross-phase shift for different values of intensity of applied fields. In addition, we take into account the effect of Doppler broadening on the light pulse propagation and it is found that a suitable choice of laser propagation directions allows us to preserve our results even in the presence of Doppler effect. It is demonstrated that by increasing the Doppler width of distribution to the room temperature, the dispersion changes from transparent subluminal to transparent superluminal light propagation which is our major motivation for this work.

The effect of giant Kerr nonlinearity on group velocity in a six-level inverted-Y atomic system

Le Van Doai

Abstract We propose an analytical model to study the effect of giant Kerr nonlinearity on group velocity of probe light in a six-level inverted-Y atomic system under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In this scheme, a nonlinearity of the medium is enhanced greatly around in three spectral regions corresponding to transparent windows. As a consequence, such a giant Kerr nonlinearity of the medium changes significantly group index for probe light which can obstruct light slowdown. Moreover, this model shows also that the probe propagation can switch between subluminal and superluminal modes in three EIT windows by adjusting the parameters of the signal and coupling fields. Such analytical model is not only convenient for considering the influence of laser parameters on group velocity but is also easy used to fit the experimental results.

Slow and fast light dynamics in a chiral cold and hot atomic medium

Bakht Amin Bacha, Fazal Ghafoor, Rashid G Nazmidinov

We study Chiral Based Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (CBEIT) of a light pulse and its associated subluminal and superluminal behavior through a cold and a hot medium of 4-level \textit{double-Lambda type} atomic system. The dynamical behavior of this chiral based system is temperature dependent. The magnetic field based chirality and dispersion is always opposite as compared with the electric field ones. Contrastingly, the response of the chiral effect along with the incoherence Doppler broadening mechanism enhances the superluminal behavior as compared with its traditional degrading effect. Nevertheless, the intensity of a coupled microwave field destroys the coherence of the medium and degrade superluminality and subluminality of the sysmtem. The undistorted retrieved pulse from a hot chiral medium delays by $896 ns$ than from a cold chiral medium under same set of parameters. Nevertheless, it advances by $-31n s$ in the cold chiral medium when a suitably different spectroscopic parameters are selected. The corresponding group index of the medium and the time delay/advance, are studied and analyzed explicitly [Note: A revise version is under preparation
