Strongly Interacting Photons in a Nonlinear Cavity

Ataç İmamoğlu, Holger Schmidt, Gary L. Woods +1 more

We consider the dynamics of single photons in a nonlinear optical cavity. When the Kerr nonlinearities of atomic dark resonances are utilized, the cavity mode is well described by a spin- $1/2$ Hamiltonian. We show that it is possible to achieve coherent control of the cavity-mode wave function using $\ensuremath{\pi}$ pulses for single photons that switch the state of the cavity with very high accuracy. The underlying physics is best understood as the nonlinearity induced anticorrelation between single-photon injection/emission events, which we refer to as photon blockade. We also propose a method which uses these strong dispersive interactions to realize a single-photon turnstile device.

Cavity Nonlinear Optics at Low Photon Numbers from Collective Atomic Motion

Subhadeep Gupta, Kevin L. Moore, Kater W. Murch +1 more

We report on nonlinear optical phenomena from collective motion of ultracold atoms within a strong-coupling cavity. The nonlinearity arises from probe-induced atom displacement. Longevity of motional coherence allows nonlinearity at extremely low cavity photon numbers.

Photon avalanche triggered by a single photon in a bistable nonlinear optical cavity

Asian Selvakumaran, Anna Minguzzi, Iacopo Carusotto +1 more

We theoretically investigate the response of a coherently-driven nonlinear optical cavity to an additional incident single photon. Using a quantum description of the nonlinear dynamics that fully accounts for the quantum fluctuations of the cavity field and for the discrete nature of the incident photon, we characterize the quantum dynamics of single-photon-stimulated jumps from the low-photon-number to the high-photon-number state of the optical bistability loop. We find that the system can exhibit a giant response to this single quantum of excitation, rooted in the phase-transition picture of optical bistability. In addition to shedding light on the role of quantum fluctuations in the non-equilibrium dynamics of a nonlinear optical cavity, our results suggest a strategy for an all-optical single-photon avalanche detector.

Nonclassical properties and entanglement generation in an optical cavity containing two atomic Bose–Einstein condensates

Ren-Fei Zheng, Qi-Hui Jiang, Lu Zhou +1 more

We consider the model of a weakly driven optical cavity containing two clouds of atomic Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs). Nonclassical photon correlations and correlations between the two atomic BECs are investigated under different cavity conditions including strong atom-field coupling and bad cavity regime. We show that the nonlinear interatom collisional interactions in BEC leads to a significant loss of cavity light coherence. Various types of nonclassical properties are investigated such as sub-Poissonian statistics, antibunching and entanglement. We show that the entanglement can be generated between BECs and the cavity field. The time evolution of entanglement is also numerically studied.
