Abstract

We experimentally observed the resolved Zeeman spectroscopy of the3P0-3D1 transition using the cold88Sr atoms, and measured the Landé g factor of3D1on the basis of the observable spectroscopy under different magnetic fields, which indicates the measured value is 0.4997(91) in good agreement with the calculated value of 0.4988. The detailed experimental scheme is presented here. Benefitting from the scheme, Sr atoms can be trapped in a mageto-optical trap (MOT) at a low temperature and a high density. The measurement of gJof3D1is beneficial to investigate the long range dipolar interaction on the3P0-3D1 transition of88Sr.

Novel repumping on 3P0 → 3D1 for Sr magneto-optical trap and Landé g factor measurement of 3D1

Shengnan Zhang, Preetam Ramchurn, Marco Menchetti +4 more

Abstract We realize an experimental facility for cooling and trapping strontium (Sr) atoms and measure the Landé g factor of 3D1 of 88Sr. Thanks to a novel repumping scheme with the 3P2 → 3S1 and 3P0 → 3D1 combination and the permanent magnets based self-assembled Zeeman slower, the peak atom number in the continuously repumped blue magneto-optical trap is enhanced by a factor of 15 with respect to the non-repumping case, and reaches ∼1 billion. Furthermore, using the resolved-sideband Zeeman spectroscopy, the Landé g factor of 3D1 is measured to be 0.4995(88) showing a good agreement with the theoretical value of 0.4988. The results will have an impact on various applications including atom laser, dipolar interactions, quantum information and precision measurements.

Experimental Determination of the Landé g -Factors for 5 s 2 1 S and 5 s 5 p 3 P States of the 87 Sr Atom

Benquan Lu, Yebing Wang, Yang Guo +4 more

We present an experimental determination on the Landé g-factors for the 5s 2 1 S 0 and 5 s 5 p 3 P 0 states in ultra-cold atomic systems, which is important for evaluating the Zeeman shift of the clock transition in the 87 Sr optical lattice clock. The Zeeman shift of the 5s5p 3 P 0 –5s 2 1 S 0 forbidden transition is measured with the π-polarized and σ ± -polarized interrogations at different magnetic field strengths. Moreover, in the g-factor measurement with the σ ± -transition spectra, it is unnecessary to calibrate the external magnetic field. By this means, the ground state 5s 2 1 S 0 g-factor for the 87 Sr atom is −1.306(52)×10 −4 , which is the first experimental determination to the best of our knowledge, and the result matches very well with the theoretical estimation. The differential g-factor δg between the 5s5p 3 P 0 state and the 5s 2 1 S 0 state of the 87 Sr atoms is measured in the experiment as well, which are −7.67(36) × 10 −5 with π-transition spectra and −7.72(43) × 10 −5 with σ ± -transition spectra, in good agreement with the previous report [Phys. Rev. A 76 (2007) 022510]. This work can also be used for determining the differential g-factor of the clock states for the optical clocks based on other atoms .

Optical spectroscopy of a microsized Rb vapor sample in magnetic fields up to 58 T

D. Ciampini, Rémy Battesti, Carlo Rizzo +1 more

We use a magnetometer probe based on the Zeeman shift of the rubidium resonant optical transition to explore the atomic magnetic response for a wide range of field values. We record optical spectra for fields from a few tesla up to 60 T, the limit of the coil producing the magnetic field. The atomic absorption is detected by the fluorescence emissions from a very small region with a submillimeter size. We investigate a wide range of magnetic interactions from the hyperfine Paschen-Back regime to the fine one and the transitions between them. The magnetic field measurement is based on the rubidium absorption itself. The rubidium spectroscopic constants were previously measured with high precision, except the excited state Land\'e $g$-factor that we derive from the position of the absorption lines in the transition to the fine Paschen-Back regime. Our spectroscopic investigation, even if limited by the Doppler broadening of the absorption lines, measures the field with a 20 ppm uncertainty at the explored high magnetic fields. Its accuracy is limited to 75 ppm by the excited state Land\'e $g$-factor determination.

Measurement of the Landé g factor of the 5D5/2 state of Ba ii with a single trapped ion

Nathan Kurz, Matthew Dietrich, Gang Shu +2 more

We present a terrestrial measurement of the Land\'e $g$ factor of the $5{D}_{5/2}$ state of singly ionized barium. Measurements were performed on single Doppler-cooled ${}^{138}{\mathrm{Ba}}^{+}$ ions in a linear Paul trap. A frequency-stabilized fiber laser with a nominal wavelength of $1.762$ $\ensuremath{\mu}$m was scanned across the $6{S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}5{D}_{5/2}$ transition to spectroscopically resolve transitions between Zeeman sublevels of the ground and excited states. From the relative positions of the four narrow transitions observed at several different values for the applied magnetic field, we find a value of $1.2020\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0005$ for ${g}_{5{D}_{5/2}}$.

Cooling and Trapping 88 Sr Atoms with 461 nm Laser

Shaokai Wang, Wang Qiang, Lin Yi-Ge +5 more

We report the experimental realization of a 88Sr magneto-optical trap (MOT) operating at the wavelength of 461 nm. The MOT is loaded via a 32 cm long spin-flip type Zeeman slower which enhances the MOT population by a factor of 22. The total laser power available in our experiment is about 300 mW. We have trapped 1.6 × 108 88Sr atoms with a 679nm and 707 nm repumping laser. The two repumping lasers enhance the trap population and trap lifetime by factors of 11 and 7, respectively. The 88Sr cloud has a temperature of about 2.3 mK, measured by recording the time evolution of the absorption signal.
