Abstract

The effect of polarization on the ladder-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectra of 133Cs atoms at room temperature for the transitions 62P1/2-62P3/2-112S1/2 is experimentally studied. The entire spectra with additional peaks arising from the Doppler effect are observed. As the relative angle between the probe’s and coupling’s plane of polarization arranges at 0°, 45°, and 90°, the peak height ratio of 44′3" to 44′4" increases by more than 7 times with corresponding values of 0.19, 0.69, and 1.4. Meanwhile, that of 45′4" to 44′4" are found to be 0.61, 0.87, and 1.23 (doubled), respectively. A theoretical model built to explain the experimental results with the considerations of optical pumping effect, two-photon transition probability, dephasing rate, and integration all over the velocity distribution. The simulation and experimental results are well-agreed.

Multiple electromagnetically-induced transparency of hyperfine levels in cesium 6S1/2 -6P3/2 -8S1/2 ladder-type system

Baodong Yang, Gao Jing, Wang Jie +2 more

Based on the cesium 6S1/2 -6P3/2 -8S1/2 ladder-type system, electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) is further investigated in a room-temperature vapor cell. When the probe laser is locked to one of the hyperfine transitions between the ground state 6S1/2 (F=3) and the intermediate state 6P3/2 while the coupling laser scans the transition between the intermediate state 6P3/2 and the excited state 8S1/2, the EIT spectrum has a flat background improving the spectral resolution. The theoretically calculated EIT spectral profiles from a multi-level ladder-type model are consistent well with the obtained experimental phenomena.

Low-light-level ladder-type electromagnetically induced transparency and two-photon absorption

Zong-Syun He, Jing-Yuan Su, Hong-Ren Chen +4 more

Ladder-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and two-photon absorption (TPA) under a low-light level of probe (0.2 μW/cm2(0.06Γ2)) and weak coupling power for a cesium atom at room temperature are investigated. Reduction of the fluorescence on the TPA in a three-level system via EIT interference is clearly observed and analyzed under the low probe Rabi frequency of about 0.30 MHz to avoid the affects from the vicinity of intermediate hyperfine states. The transparency ratio of EIT derived from the reduction of fluorescence is about 25%. Additionally, the EIT linewidth observed can be as narrow as 2.64 MHz, while the coupling Rabi frequency is around 2.66 MHz. By solving the steady-state optical Bloch equations, the numerical simulation spectra are in good agreement with EIT and TPA. According to our investigations, the Doppler velocity averaging effect over the thermal atoms reducing the linewidth of the EIT signal proves the advantage of observing the EIT in the room-temperature cell.

Polarization dependence of double-resonance optical pumping and electromagnetically induced transparency in the 5S1/2−5P3/2−5D5/2 transition of 87 Rb atoms

Han Seb Moon, Heung‐Ryoul Noh

The polarization dependence of double-resonance optical pumping (DROP) in the ladder-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of the $5{S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{-}5{P}_{3/2}\ensuremath{-}5{D}_{5/2}$ transition of ${}^{87}$Rb atoms is studied. The transmittance spectra in the $5{S}_{1/2}(F=2)\ensuremath{-}5{P}_{3/2}({F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=3)\ensuremath{-}5{D}_{5/2}({F}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}}=2,3,4)$ transition were observed as caused by EIT, DROP, and saturation effects in the various polarization combinations between the probe and coupling lasers. The features of the double-structure transmittance spectra in the $5{S}_{1/2}(F=2)\ensuremath{-}5{P}_{3/2}({F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=3)\ensuremath{-}5{D}_{5/2}({F}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}}=4)$ cycling transition were attributed to the difference in saturation effect according to the transition routes between the Zeeman sublevels and the EIT according to the two-photon transition probability.

Theoretical simulation of double resonance phenomenon in ladder-type Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency

Chao Li, Xinhua Lu, Jing Fan +2 more

Abstract The double resonance phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a ladder-type Rydberg atomic system is theoretically investigated. Based on the cesium 6 S 1 / 2 → 6 P 3 / 2 → n D 5 / 2 transition, we establish a density-matrix model incorporating the Doppler effect and simulate the absorption spectra under counter-propagating laser configurations. The numerical approach is adopted: a two-velocity-group approximation (Lorentzian line-shape superposition). The results show that when the probe detuning Δ p is fixed and nonzero, scanning the coupling laser frequency yields two symmetric transparency peaks separated by δ = 2 ( λ p / λ c ) | Δ p | , in excellent agreement with recent experimental observations. The two-velocity-group approximation is computationally efficient and physically transparent, while the high-precision integration confirms its validity. We also reveal that conventional uniform velocity averaging fails to resolve the narrow EIT peaks due to insufficient sampling, and propose effective numerical strategies. This work provides a reliable theoretical tool for simulating Rydberg EIT spectra and offers insights into Doppler-induced double resonance, which may find applications in laser frequency stabilization and self-calibration of Rydberg atom-based sensors.

Measurement of relative transition strengths of 133Cs Rydberg D states using electromagnetically induced transparency

Shanxia Bao, Hao Zhang, Linjie Zhang +2 more

Abstract Transition strengths between states are fundamental physical properties of atomic spectra. The differences in fine structure splitting of certain states are mainly attributed to the angular momentum parts of transition dipole matrix elements. These can be calculated by integrating the wave-functions theoretically and can be accessed by selecting corresponding polarizations of the exciting lasers experimentally. We measured the transition strengths ratios of nD $$_{5/2}$$ 5 / 2 /nD $$_{3/2}$$ 3 / 2 via Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) by changing the powers and polarizations of probing and coupling lasers in a room temperature cesium vapor cell. The variation of the ratios on the principal quantum number n which ranges from 40 to 62 is also investigated. Theoretical and experimental results agreed with each other.

Double-resonance optical-pumping effect and ladder-type electromagnetically induced transparency signal without Doppler background in cesium atomic vapour cell

Baodong Yang, Jing Gao, Qiangbing Liang +3 more

In a Doppler-broadened ladder-type cesium atomic system (6S 1/2 -6P 3/2 -8S 1/2 ), this paper characterizes electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in two different experimental arrangements, and investigates the influence of the double-resonance optical-pumping (DROP) effect on EIT in both arrangements. When the probe laser is weak, DROP is explicitly suppressed. When the probe laser is moderate, population of the intermediate level (6P 3/2 F ' = 5) is remarkable, therefore DROP is mixed with EIT. An interesting bimodal spectrum with the broad component due to DROP and the narrow part due to EIT has been clearly observed in cesium 6S 1/2 F = 4−6P 3/2 F ' = 5−8S 1/2 F '' = 4 transitions.
