Abstract

Based on the cesium 6S1/2 -6P3/2 -8S1/2 ladder-type system, electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) is further investigated in a room-temperature vapor cell. When the probe laser is locked to one of the hyperfine transitions between the ground state 6S1/2 (F=3) and the intermediate state 6P3/2 while the coupling laser scans the transition between the intermediate state 6P3/2 and the excited state 8S1/2, the EIT spectrum has a flat background improving the spectral resolution. The theoretically calculated EIT spectral profiles from a multi-level ladder-type model are consistent well with the obtained experimental phenomena.

Electromagnetically induced transparency without a Doppler background in a multilevel ladder-type cesium atomic system

Baodong Yang, Jing Gao, Tiancai Zhang +1 more

We present an investigation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) without Doppler background due to a locked probe laser. The EIT is theoretically studied based on a multilevel ladder-type cesium atomic system 6${S}_{1/2}$--6${P}_{3/2}$--8${S}_{1/2}$ in a room-temperature vapor cell. The experimental results agree with the theoretical calculations. Compared with the traditional EIT spectra with a Doppler profile limiting the spectral resolution for keeping the coupling laser locked and scanning the probe laser, these EIT spectra with the probe laser locked and the coupling laser scanned have a flat background, which seem be of great benefit for applications such as the measurement of hyperfine intervals between excited states, the study of highly excited Rydberg states, laser-frequency stabilization, etc.

Measurement of hyperfine splitting and determination of hyperfine structure constant of cesium 8S1/2state by using of ladder-type EIT

王杰 Wang Jie, Junmin Wang, Huifeng Liu +2 more

The narrow electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) resonance peaks are observed with two low-power counter-propagating diode lasers in cesium (Cs) 6S1/2 - 6P1/2 - 8S1/2 ladder-type atomic system. To precisely determine the centers of resonance peaks, multiple background-free EIT signals are achieved using a novel scanning scheme in which the coupling laser driving Cs 6P1/2 - 8S1/2 transition is scanned and the probe laser driving Cs 6S1/2 – 6P1/2 is frequency locked. A temperature-stabilized fiber-pigtailed waveguide-type phase electro-optical modulator (EOM) and a stable confocal Fabry-Perot cavity are used as a precise frequency marker to measure the hyperfine splitting of Cs 8S1/2 state. The impact of the external magnetic field on the measurement is also investigated. Furthermore, the hyperfine structure constant (here it is the hyperfine magnetic dipole constant, A) of Cs 8S1/2 state is determined to be A = 219.06 MHz ± 0.12 MHz based on the measured hyperfine splitting (Δhfs = 876.24 MHz ± 0.50 MHz).

Experimental investigation of absorption and dispersion in multi-V-type cesium atomic system

Jianming Zhao, Yanting Zhao, Lirong Wang +2 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is observed in a three-level multi-V-type system in cesium vapor at room temperature. The absorption and dispersion properties are measured under the condition that the coupling frequency is exactly resonance with transition 6S1/2(F=4) to 6P3/2(F'=3) while the probe frequency is scanned across the transitions from the 6S1/2(F=4) to all structures of the 6P3/2. The effects of the intensity of the pumping beam on EIT signal are investigated. The simple theory model was presented and the results of the experiment agree with the simple theoretical analysis.

Abstract We experimentally studied the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in cesium (Cs) vapors under a three-level V -configuration system. Two independent diode lasers were employed in locked and scanning mode, respectively, for pumping and probing the atomic media. A probe laser was scanned across 6 S 1/2 ( F = 4) to all subsutructures of 6 P 3/2 ( F ′ = 5 , F ′ = 4 and F ′ = 3 ) and the pump was locked at F ′ = 5 or F ′ = 4 or F ′ = 3 of 6 P 3/2 . A good agreement of the experimental results with theoretical simulations was observed. The intensity and magnetic field dependence of the EIT spectrum in a V -type system of Cs atoms was also studied.

Electromagnetically induced transparency of Rydberg atoms in modulated laser fields

Yang Zhi-Wei, Jiao Yue-Chun, Xiaoxuan Han +2 more

Rydberg atoms, with large principal quantum number n, have been widely investigated in recent years due to their peculiar properties, such as big sizes, long lifetimes and strong interactions with fields and other Rydberg atoms. Rydberg atoms are very sensitive to external fields due to their large polarizabilities scaling as n7.These make Rydberg atoms an ideal candidate for the quantum information, the many-body interaction, etc.In this work, we investigate the Rydberg atoms using electromagneticlly induced transparency (EIT) in a ladder three-level system. The EIT is a quantum interference effect between two excitation path-ways driven by two laser fields. The main idea is performed in a room temperature cesium vapor cell, where the probe laser frequency is modulated. The ground state (6P1/2), excited state (6P3/2), and Rydberg state (nS1/2) constitute a Rydberg three-level system, in which the probe laser is fixed to the 6S1/2 (F = 4)6P3/2 (F = 5) transition by saturated absorption spectrum technique, whereas the coupling laser is scanned across the 6P3/249S1/2 transition. We detect the demodulated EIT signal with the lock-in amplifier (SR830). The modulated EIT signal shows a two-peak structure. The measured spacing between two peaks increases with the frequency detuning, caused by the modulation amplitude, and half the spacing between the peak-to-peak is nearly 1.67 times the modulation amplitude of the probe laser; the measured result shows that the splitting is independent of the modulation frequency. The experimental results are in agreement with the theoretical calculations. The results in our work can be used for real-time monitoring of the laser-line profiles and the fluctuation of laser frequency.

Investigation of the two-color polarization spectroscopy between the excited states based on cesium atoms

Jinfang Zhang, Ya-Na Ren, Junmin Wang +1 more

Two-color polarization spectroscopy (TCPS) of cesium 6S1/2-6P3/2-8S1/2 (852.3 nm + 794.6 nm) ladder-type system in a room-temperature vapor cell are investigated. The frequency of 852.3 nm laser used as a pump beam is locked on one of the hyperfine transitions between the ground state 6S1/2 and excited state 6P3/2 by the saturated absorption spectroscopy technique, which can populate some atoms on the 6P3/2 excited state and induce anisotropy in the atomic medium. The frequency of 794.6 nm laser serving as a probe beam is scanned across the whole 6P3/2→8S1/2 transition to ascertain this anisotropy, and thus the TCPS is obtained. In experiment, we measure and analyse the influence of frequency detuning of 852.3 nm pump laser on TCPS, and especially reveal that some of hyperfine energy levels of intermediate excited state 6P3/2, which has no direct interaction with the 852.3 nm pump laser, are also populated by a small fraction of atoms with a specific speed in the direction of pump laser beam due to Doppler effect, so they also have contribution to the TCPS when the 794.6 nm probe laser is scanned to the resonance transition line between the 6P3/2 and 8S1/2 states after the Doppler frequency shift has been considered. In addition, we prove that the atomic coherence like electromagnetically induced transparency effect obviously results in a narrower line width of TCPS in the case of counter-propagating experimental configuration than that in the case of pump beam co-propagating with the probe beam in the Cs vapor cell. Finally, we apply the TCPS with dispersive shaped feature to frequency stabilization with no modulation, and the frequency fluctuations of 794.6 nm laser are ~0.5 MHz and ~9.2 MHz for the frequency-locking and free running in ~225 s, respectively. The above research work is expected to play a role in precisely measuring the atomic energy level structure and its related hyperfine structure constant (magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole coupling constants), and also in stabilizing the laser frequency to the excited state transition especially for the optical fiber communication, two-color laser cooling/trapping neutral atoms, optical filter, etc.
