Abstract

We study the nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of a linearly polarized microwave probe field passing through many nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers embedded in a high-Q single-crystal diamond mechanical resonator. On the basis of the strain-mediated coupling mechanism, we establish a three-level closed-loop system in the ground states of the NV center in the presence of a static magnetic field. It is shown that by applying an acoustic field, the birefringence is induced in the system through the cross-Kerr effect, so that the probe field is transmitted with a high intensity and rotated polarization plane by 90 degrees. In addition, we demonstrate that the acoustic field has a major role in enhancing the MOR angle to 90 degrees. Moreover, it is shown that the MOR angle of the polarization plane after passing through the presented system is sensitive to the relative phase of the applied fields. The physical mechanism of the MOR enhancement is explained using the analytical expressions which are in good agreement with the numerical results. The presented scheme can be used as a polarization converter for efficient switching TE/TM modes in optical communication, the depolarization backscattering lidar, polarization spectroscopy and precision measurements.

Microwave optical limiting via an acoustic field in a diamond mechanical resonator

Mohsen Ghaderi Goran Abad, Mohammad Mahmoudi

We investigate the generation and control of the reverse saturable absorption (RSA) and optical limiting (OL) at microwave (mw) range in high-Q single-crystal diamond mechanical resonator (DMR) embedded with many nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. The strain-induced acoustic modes enable mechanical manipulation of NV centers. On the basis of strain-coupling mechanism, it is shown that the saturable absorption (SA) switches to the RSA by applying the acoustic field, leading to induce the OL in the diamond through the cross-Kerr effect. We demonstrate that the OL characteristics such as, threshold, efficiency, and dynamic range can be controlled by changing either the intensity or frequency of the acoustic field. Moreover, we show that this optical limiter can amplify noiselessly the low intensity of the mw field input to the sensors and also attenuate any gain-induced noise and increase in the intensity of the mw field if it exceeds the intensity threshold. In addition, it is shown that by increasing either the number of NV centers or length of the diamond, the optical limiter can be more efficient. The physical mechanism of the OL establishment is explained using the analytical expressions, which are in good agreement with the numerical results. Our proposed acoustic-induced optical limiter can be a scheme for protecting different optical and electronic devices in mw range, remote sensing, navigation, communications, microwave heating and thermo/laser therapy.

Enhanced nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in cold atoms: A theoretical study

Mohsen Ghaderi Goran Abad, Mitra Valinezhad, Mohammad Mahmoudi

We theoretically investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of a linearly polarized probe field in the four-level N-type cold atoms. By applying a static magnetic field and a weak coupling field, it is shown that the birefringence enhancement is induced in the system. Moreover, we show that the static magnetic field has a major role in switching the dichroism to enhanced birefringence in the system. We also obtain a large intensity for the output field with nearly perpendicular MOR angle by 88 degrees with subnatural width. It is demonstrated that Doppler broadening has a destructive effect on the MOR of the polarization direction of the probe field. The results of our study can be used for selecting narrow band of wavelengths and polarization converter for efficient switching of TM/TE polarization modes in optical communication, the depolarization backscattering lidar, polarization spectroscopy and precision measurements.

Magneto-optical rotation in the diamond nitrogen-vacancy center

Ali Mortezapour, Mohsen Ghaderi Goran Abad, Mahdi Ahmadi Borji

Abstract The interaction of two orthogonally polarized beams and a diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) center sample is investigated. It is shown that applying a static magnetic field parallel to the propagation direction of the probe beam makes the diamond NV center sample a birefringent medium. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is attained under the assumption of specific parameters. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the magneto-optical rotation (MOR) can be manipulated by the control beam. Our results show that how a large and complete MOR can be obtained by adjusting the intensity of the magnetic field and the length of the diamond NV center sample.

The influence of Kerr field and Doppler broadening on magneto optical and image state rotation

Rehana Gul, Hazrat Ali, Muhammad Imtiaz Khan +5 more

We examine the magneto-optical and image state rotation (MOR) of left and right circularly plane-polarized light pulse through a double Λ-type four-level configuration of Rubidium atom via Kerr field and Doppler broadening in the presence of the static magnetic field. The medium’s behavior is different for both orthogonal components of the probe beam, causing linear dichroism or circular birefringence. Enhanced and lossless MOR is obtained by applying the control field through a closed-loop birefringent system. We observe a magnified angle of rotation of probe field in Doppler broadened medium. It is shown that due to the Kerr nonlinearity, the rotation angle of the probe beam is generated and modified through cold and Doppler broadened medium. Moreover, almost complete polarization rotation is observed for a particular set of parameters. The MOR can be effectively utilized in designing new TM/TE polarization modes, optical communication, polarization spectroscopy, lider with backscattering depolarization, precision measurements, and magnetometry.

Phase-controlled optical Faraday rotation in a closed-loop atomic system

Mariye Veisi, Azar Vafafard, Mohammad Mahmoudi

We investigate the nonlinear optical Faraday rotation (OFR) of a probe field passing through a double V–type closed-loop atomic system in the absence of an external static magnetic field. Enhancement OFR is obtained by applying the control fields to establish the closed-loop configuration. It is shown that the scattering of both control fields into the probe field mode via wave mixing induce an OFR enhancement. We find that the rotation of the polarization plane in the nonlinear OFR depends on the intensity and relative phase of applied fields and can be controlled by these parameters. It is demonstrated that applying a microwave field to the system has a constructive role in enhancement of phase-controlled nonlinear OFR.

Magneto-optical rotation of surface plasmon polaritons

Habibur Rahman, Hazrat Ali, Iftikhar Ahmad +2 more

Abstract We investigate magneto-optical rotation (MOR) of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the interface of a metal and a four-level atomic system. The MOR of SPPs can be controlled and modified with the intensity and frequency of the applied fields. We show the birefringence enhancement of the weak probe fields propagating through the atomic medium in the presence of the static magnetic field. The external magnetic field has a vital role in the generation and control over the MOR of SPPs. The MOR completely stops when either the external magnetic field or the probe field or both are tuned to resonance. A pretty behavior of MOR of SPPs is observed for a specific set of control field frequency. The enhanced MOR of SPP has significant applications in atomic spectroscopy, optical communication, nano-photonics, optical switches, and precise measurement.
